Change Grow Live - Kirklees

Change Grow Live - Kirklees Free & confidential service in Kirklees, who help support people for their drug or/and alcohol use. In 2000 we became part of the Lifeline Project.

Our IPS team have their own page, follow the link below to stay up to date with our Employment Support:
https://www.facebook.com/CGLkirkleesIPS Every year, Lifeline Kirklees works with hundreds of people who have problems with drugs or alcohol in supporting them to change their behaviour and achieve their recovery goals. We provide help for individuals, families and communities throughout Kirklees who have been affected by substance misuse. Our drug and alcohol services started in 1985 as a small organisation called Unit 51. A range of alcohol and drug services are available in Kirklees through our support centres in Huddersfield and Dewsbury town centres as well as in some GP surgeries and health centres. Both of our centres are easily accessible by public transport and have wheelchair accessibility. We provide an evening service on Tuesdays for those who work during the day and we also work with people who may find it difficult to come into the service at all, perhaps due to mental or physical health issues, through working with them in their home or in the community.

We are aware of several recent overdoses, including suspected deaths, linked to contamination in the he**in and crack co***ne supply in Kirklees.

A range of synthetic substances has been identified in the local supply. This significantly increases the risk of overdose and serious harm for anyone using these drugs.

Signs of overdose may include:

- Loss of consciousness
-Shallow, rasping, or irregular breathing (or not breathing at all)
-Snoring or gurgling sounds
-Pinpoint or fixed pupils
-Blue lips and/or fingertips

It is impossible to know what is in a drug just by looking at it—even if it appears similar to something you’ve used before.

- The safest option is not to take illicit drugs.
- CGL provides free test strips that can detect synthetic opioids to help you assess risk before use.
- If you choose to use drugs, start with a minimal amount—you cannot predict how contaminated substances will affect you.
- Avoid mixing drugs with alcohol or other substances.
- Do not use drugs alone. Take turns and look out for each other. Someone must be able to call for help and administer naloxone.

Administer a dose of naloxone and call 999 immediately. Multiple doses may be required to reverse the effects of both opioids and synthetic opioids.

We have Naloxone available here at Change Grow Live Kirklees. Anyone can pop into our hub and get their own free kit and advice today.

At the end of January and the start of February, we have several events and talks scheduled as part of our pre-Ramadan campaign and Menopause Roadshow.

- Sunday 25th Jan at 11.30am at the Unity Centre in Huddersfield, as we join the local community and a panel of speakers for a ‘Health & Healing’ event on substance use. Hosted by Imran Safdar.

- We are kicking off our Menopause Roadshow with the first session taking place on the 29th of January at 10am at Soothill Community Centre in Batley, and we will be joined by the Get Set Goal team at Huddersfield University. Followed by two more sessions on the 4th and 12th of February, this time at the Madrasah Islamiyah in Batley.

Women’s health is a key priority for us, and we know navigating menopause can be difficult. Join us to learn about the signs, symptoms and how substances and supplements can affect you.

While many people can take part in Dry January and only feel positive health benefits, such as better mental health, improved energy levels and better sleep.

However, for those who are alcohol dependent, this can look completely different.

Alcohol is one of the very few substances for which withdrawal can actually be fatal. This can make Dry January a complicated time for people with alcohol dependency. The potential pressure on themselves or loved ones to participate in Dry January may lead to unexpected withdrawals.

For those who are alcohol dependent, we NEVER recommend that you stop drinking suddenly and instead reduce gradually with help from a professional.

If you would like a chat with a member of our team, please call us on 01484 353333 or refer yourself or someone else (with their consent) via our website - https://www.changegrowlive.org/service/kirklees-drug-alcohol/referrals

The new year brings around the start of Dry January.

Dry January is a brilliant reason to completely cut out or cut down on your monthly alcohol intake; however, if you drink to a dependent level, it can be extremely dangerous to suddenly stop and can potentially lead to seizures and death.

Throughout this month, we will be sharing tips on what you can do if Dry January is too dangerous for you to take part in.
