Having a son or daughter that struggles with addiction can be really hard to manage for parents.

So a lady from South Moreton is starting a very relaxed, informal peer support group for others parents going through it. The hope is to have a place to get together, hear speakers, enjoy some tea and cakes and non-judgemental listening.

This handsome smiling young man is Oliver. Tragically Oliver died by su***de on 27th March aged 18.

His family tell us that he was a wonderful son and a fantastic older brother. He enjoyed football, hiking, movies, music, comedy & computing. They are devastatingly shocked to learn of his death by su***de on the last day of term before he broke up from school for the Easter holidays.

Oliver was a kind-hearted, hard-working, and inquisitive young man who loved his family. He is deeply loved & missed.

The Cornermen send our deepest sympathies and are extremely humbled that the family have chosen us as one of the charities they wish people to donate to in memory of Oliver. We have promised every penny will go towards us continuing our fight to try and stop more men like Oliver dying by su***de.

We are delighted to announce that we have been supported again this year by The Didcot Powerhouse fund.

Our second panel discussion will focus on mental health challenges faced by men and young boys, exploring topics such as emotional wellbeing, stigma, and the importance of creating safe spaces for open conversation. The session will highlight practical ways to support mental health, encourage early intervention, and promotion of positive role models.

We are pleased to be joined by Steve James from The Cornermen, who brings valuable experience in supporting men’s mental health, alongside Darius Smith, a dedicated youth worker who works closely with young people to provide guidance, mentorship, and support.

Together, they will share insights, lived experiences, and actionable strategies to help foster healthier, more resilient individuals and communities.

Today was the start of our talks with University of Oxford to deliver su***de prevention and mental health awareness to their staff teams.

Steve and John hosted 2 sessions today at University of Oxford Club . First session was an all male group and second session mixed. To members of the university estates teams.

Glad to hear feedback that The cornermens relaxed style with humour and straight talking was a hit with the attendees. We look forward to working with the university more in this mutually beneficial partnership.

Steve met Farah at The men’s mental health conference this week. Farah lost her 21 year old son Omar to su***de 3 years ago, while he was away university. The family never saw it coming.
She wrote an article in the times about her experience to try and turn her families tragedy into raising awareness in hope to prevent other families experiencing the agony.

This is her article. When Steve asked if it’s ok to share she said “I would be grateful if you share it widely. We all have a responsibility to talk about su***de”

Farah is going to come visit The Cornermen later in the year and we look forward to welcoming her.

This afternoon Cornermen Steve and Sam were invited to the amazing international cafe, which meets at he Didcot Baptist church. The lads spoke with the users of the cafe and its volunteers about the Cornermen and what we do.

The conversations we had will hopefully lead to some exciting partnership working in the future. Plus the visit even saw Sam to do some public speaking! (Picture for evidence 💪)
