Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction, is a painful syndrome linked to the jaw.
Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction:
🟥 Reduced Jaw Movement
TMJ disorder can limit range of motion of the jaw, meaning the mouth only opens partially, sometimes with clicking sounds. Some patients may even experience lock jaw.
🟥 Headaches
Chronic headaches or migraines are a common symptom of TMJ disorder, though many people don’t make the connection. The condition creates tension in the jaw muscles, which can spread to surrounding facial muscles. This often leads to headaches, facial discomfort, or even pain around the eyes.
🟥 Ear Pain
TMJ disorder can also cause ear pain or a constant ringing sensation, yet it’s frequently overlooked as a cause. These symptoms typically arise after actions that extend the jaw, such as chewing, biting, or yawning. Since the TMJ is located just below the ear, it’s not uncommon for discomfort to radiate into the ear area.
🟥 Neck and Shoulder Pain
Surprisingly, TMJ disorder may also lead to pain in the neck and shoulders. This occurs due to the muscle tension caused by frequent jaw clenching or facial strain. When the jaw and facial muscles are tight, the surrounding muscles—including those in the neck and shoulders—can also become tense and painful.
🟥 Dental Damage
Because TMJ symptoms can be subtle or misunderstood, many patients don’t seek treatment until noticeable dental issues appear. TMJ Dysfunction leads to teeth grinding or clenching, which puts excessive pressure on the teeth, especially the molars near the jaw joint, leading to enamel wear and other damage.
🟨 What causes TMJ Dysfunction?
The exact cause of TMJ disorder can be difficult to pinpoint. It often results from a combination of factors such as teeth clenching, gum chewing, nail biting, stress, or underlying health conditions like fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, or a previous jaw injury. Teeth clenching or grinding—also called bruxism—is a common contributor.
