Concussion & Chiropractic Care 🧠✨

Chiropractors can play a supportive role in concussion recovery by addressing spinal misalignments, reducing inflammation, and improving nervous system function.

We can also help with symptoms like neck pain, headaches, and balance problems through techniques like manipulation, soft tissue therapy, and neuromuscular retraining.

Here's how chiropractic care can help with concussion recovery:

✔️ Addressing Spinal Misalignments:Chiropractic adjustments can help restore proper spinal alignment, which can improve nerve function and potentially alleviate symptoms like neck pain, headaches, and dizziness.
✔️ Reducing Inflammation:Chiropractic care can help reduce inflammation in the muscles and tissues around the neck and spine, which can contribute to concussion-related pain and discomfort. ✔️ Improving Nervous System Function:Chiropractors can assess and address any neurological dysfunctions that may arise post-concussion, potentially aiding in neuroplasticity and improving brain function.
✔️ Vestibular Rehabilitation:For individuals experiencing balance and coordination issues, chiropractors can incorporate vestibular rehabilitation techniques to help improve balance and reduce dizziness.
✔️ Neuromuscular Reeducation:Exercises and techniques can be used to retrain the brain and body to work together more efficiently, particularly for balance and proprioception.
✔️ Soft Tissue Therapy and Exercises:Chiropractors can use soft tissue therapy and specific exercises to address muscle tension and improve range of motion, contributing to overall recovery.

Concussion: Diagnosis

🧠 Think You Didn’t Have a Concussion Because You Didn’t Black Out?
Think again. Only 10% of concussions involve loss of consciousness — which means 90% don’t. So no blackout doesn’t mean no brain injury.

Concussions are functional injuries, not structural. That’s why CT scans and MRIs often look normal even when a concussion has occurred.

⚠️ Go to AE immediately if you experience any of the following after a head injury:
• Worsening headache
• Extreme drowsiness or trouble waking up
• Vomiting
• Memory loss before or after the injury
• Confusion or repeating questions
• Seizures
• Slurred speech
• Blood from ears, nose, mouth, or eyes
• Unsteady balance or weakness in limbs

🧠 So, how do you actually know if you’ve had a concussion?

You only need TWO things:
1. A mechanism of injury (e.g., your head was jolted, even without direct impact)
2. At least one concussion symptom soon after the injury

⏳ What’s recovery like?
Good news: 60–70% recover within a month.
But 30–40% may have symptoms that last months or even years without proper care.

👉 Early diagnosis and treatment matter. Don’t ignore the signs.

What’s a Concussion?

A concussion is “a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces”

Concussions are pretty common. In the UK alone, over a million people go to A&E every year because of head injuries, and about 9 out of 10 of those are mild head injuries or concussions. A lot of these cases—somewhere between one-third and half—are kids under 15.

How Do Concussions Happen?

It’s not just about getting hit in the head. What really causes a concussion is your brain moving really fast back and forth inside your skull. This rapid movement stretches and twists brain cells, which messes with how they normally work.

When brain cells get stretched, tiny channels on the surface of the cells open up, and certain chemicals start to move in and out of the cells. This causes a kind of “brain overload” where messages start firing all over the place without any real order or purpose. That’s why someone with a concussion might look dazed, lose their balance, or seem confused—they’re getting a bunch of mixed-up signals all at once.

What Are the Signs of a Concussion?

Physical signs:
• Headache
• Neck pain
• Dizziness
• Balance problems
• Nausea or throwing up
• Trouble with bright lights or loud sounds
• Blurry or double vision

Thinking problems (cognitive):
• Memory issues
• Trouble focusing
• Confusion
• Feeling like your brain is moving in slow motion
• Feeling “foggy” or out of it

Emotional symptoms:
• Feeling sad, anxious, or nervous
• Getting annoyed or emotional more easily
• Feeling low or down

Sleep issues:
• Tiredness or low energy
• Sleeping too much or not enough
• Struggling to fall asleep

A recent study found that drinking just one energy drink a day can inhibit muscle recovery and growth.

Basically, energy drinks seem to slow down muscle healing, stop muscle cells from developing properly, and mess with the stuff your body needs to build muscle over time.

One big issue is the high caffeine content—it can boost your cortisol levels (that’s a stress hormone), which gets in the way of protein building, something your muscles really need to recover and grow.

On top of that, most energy drinks are loaded with sugar, which can cause inflammation and mess with how your body handles insulin—both bad news for muscle repair and getting nutrients where they need to go.

And to make it worse, a lot of these drinks also have artificial additives that might make muscle recovery even harder.

🔹 Lack of sleep increases hunger and can cause weight gain.

🔸 Not getting enough sleep can mess with your hunger hormones.

Basically, when you’re sleep-deprived, your body starts producing more ghrelin — that’s the hormone that makes you feel hungry — and less leptin, which is the one that tells you you’re full.

Here’s a breakdown:
• Ghrelin is often called the “hunger hormone.” It’s made in your stomach and kicks in when your body wants food. So more ghrelin = feeling hungrier.
• Leptin, on the other hand, is made by fat cells and tells your brain, “Hey, we’re full — stop eating.” Less leptin = not feeling full.

When you don’t get enough sleep, ghrelin goes up and leptin goes down. That combo can make you feel like you’re starving, even if you’re not — which usually leads to snacking more and eating bigger portions. Over time, that can lead to weight gain and increase your risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Strength Training Can Help You Age Better 🏋️‍♀️

Hitting the weights regularly might do more than just build muscle—it could actually slow down how your body ages.

Recent research shows that strength training, even if you start later in life, can be a powerful way to stay healthy as you get older and may even help undo some of the effects of aging.

So, what makes strength training so effective? It’s tied to things like keeping your muscles strong, improving how your body handles blood sugar, and possibly even helping your cells stay younger for longer.

What counts as strength training?
Basically, any kind of resistance exercise—like lifting weights or doing bodyweight exercises (think push-ups or squats).

Here’s how strength training can slow down biological aging:

🔥 Makes You Biologically Younger:
Working out with weights about three times a week for an hour has been linked to a drop in biological age—some studies even say it could make you up to eight years “younger.”

🔥 Helps Protect Your Cells:
It’s been linked to longer telomeres (those protective caps on your DNA), which are tied to how quickly your cells age.

🔥 Better Blood Sugar Control:
It improves insulin sensitivity, which helps keep your blood sugar in check and reduces the risk of age-related health problems.

🔥 Keeps You Strong and Mobile:
Strength training helps you hold onto muscle mass and strength, which is key for staying active and independent as you age.

🔥 Cuts Down on Inflammation:
It can lower chronic inflammation in the body—a major player in the aging process.

🔥 Even Impacts Your Genes:
Some studies show strength training can actually reverse certain aging-related patterns in how your genes are expressed.

Did you know we offer Kinesiology Taping?

Key Benefits of Kinesiology Tape:

🔹 Pain Relief:Kinesiology tape can help reduce pain by stimulating nerve receptors and potentially influencing the body's pain-relieving mechanisms. 🔸 Reduce Inflammation:The tape's lifting effect on the skin can improve lymphatic drainage, which may help reduce swelling and inflammation.
🔹 Improve Circulation:By lifting the skin, the tape can promote better blood flow and circulation to the affected area, aiding in healing. 🔸 Muscle Support:Kinesiology tape can provide support to muscles and joints, helping to prevent injuries and improve performance. 🔹 Enhanced Athletic Performance:The tape can help improve proprioception (body awareness), muscle function, and overall performance. 🔸 Injury Recovery:Kinesiology tape may be beneficial in the recovery of muscle strains, sprains, and other injuries. 🔹 Muscle Spasm Relief:The tape can help reduce muscle spasms and cramping by supporting proper muscle function. 🔸 Improved Proprioception:Kinesiology tape can help improve body awareness and coordination, which can be beneficial for athletes and people with joint or muscle issues. 🔹 Lymphatic Drainage:The tape's lifting effect can stimulate lymphatic drainage, which can help reduce swelling and improve overall healing. How Kinesiology Tape Works:
🔺 The tape is designed to lift the skin slightly away from the underlying muscle or tissue, creating space for better blood flow and lymphatic drainage.
🔺 It also stimulates nerve receptors in the skin, which can help reduce pain and improve muscle function.
🔺 The tape's elasticity allows for full range of motion while providing support and stability.
🔺 It can help re-educate the neuromuscular system, allowing the body to move and function more efficiently.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Dysfunction, is a painful syndrome linked to the jaw.

Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction:

🟥 Reduced Jaw Movement
TMJ disorder can limit range of motion of the jaw, meaning the mouth only opens partially, sometimes with clicking sounds. Some patients may even experience lock jaw.

🟥 Headaches
Chronic headaches or migraines are a common symptom of TMJ disorder, though many people don’t make the connection. The condition creates tension in the jaw muscles, which can spread to surrounding facial muscles. This often leads to headaches, facial discomfort, or even pain around the eyes.

🟥 Ear Pain
TMJ disorder can also cause ear pain or a constant ringing sensation, yet it’s frequently overlooked as a cause. These symptoms typically arise after actions that extend the jaw, such as chewing, biting, or yawning. Since the TMJ is located just below the ear, it’s not uncommon for discomfort to radiate into the ear area.

🟥 Neck and Shoulder Pain
Surprisingly, TMJ disorder may also lead to pain in the neck and shoulders. This occurs due to the muscle tension caused by frequent jaw clenching or facial strain. When the jaw and facial muscles are tight, the surrounding muscles—including those in the neck and shoulders—can also become tense and painful.

🟥 Dental Damage
Because TMJ symptoms can be subtle or misunderstood, many patients don’t seek treatment until noticeable dental issues appear. TMJ Dysfunction leads to teeth grinding or clenching, which puts excessive pressure on the teeth, especially the molars near the jaw joint, leading to enamel wear and other damage.

🟨 What causes TMJ Dysfunction?

The exact cause of TMJ disorder can be difficult to pinpoint. It often results from a combination of factors such as teeth clenching, gum chewing, nail biting, stress, or underlying health conditions like fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, or a previous jaw injury. Teeth clenching or grinding—also called bruxism—is a common contributor.
