In reality, the best way to lift multiple objects from the floor is to do so in a variety of different ways.

Core strength and it's relation to back pain must be in top 3 things patients tell us they have been told is the cause of their long term low back pain.

Given that there is no conclusive evidence as to specifically ๐‘Š๐ป๐ด๐‘‡ causes low back pain...

I would have to say that this statement is ๐…๐ˆ๐‚๐“๐ˆ๐Ž๐.

Currently we know that a round 91% of cases of low back pain are ๐๐จ๐ง-๐’๐ฉ๐ž๐œ๐ข๐Ÿ๐ข๐œ ๐จ๐ซ ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข-๐…๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ฅ

This means that there is not 1 single cause 1๏ธโƒฃ

Instead, there are a number of other factors that are playing together to create the patient's pain.

We do not currently have an agreed definition of what constitutes a 'strong' core or what is defined by a 'weak' core.

However, we do know that people with very strong ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ and very weak ๐Ÿ˜– core muscles get back pain to the same rate.

The whole idea of core muscles and their relationship with low back pain comes from a study back in 1996...

๐๐”๐“ that study only proposed that their could be a link, not that there IS a link between core strength and low back pain โŒ

Perhaps surprisingly, I will argue that core strengthening exercises can actually be very helpful in recovery, but not for the reason that you think...

(It's actually the reason that I use core exercise with my patients)

There are a number of studies that have found that core strengthening exercises are more effective than other forms of exercise (such as walking or using an exercise bike) in the short term to reduce pain levels.

Nancy is a patient who has been coming to us for a long time for management of recurrent low back and neck problems.

The most significant thing to note about Nancy's treatment is that the consistency of her appointments has delivered fewer flare ups and a lower level of day-to-day discomfort ๐Ÿ“‰

There's always a lot of debate about what the best sort of exercise is when you have a problem with your low back.

You can never go far on social media without a self-proclaimed "guru" telling you ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’๐’–๐’Ž๐’ƒ๐’†๐’“ 1 ๐’†๐’™๐’†๐’“๐’„๐’Š๐’”๐’† that you absolutely MUST do for your low back ๐Ÿ™„

The truth is there are no magical exercises โŒ for low back pain...

But we do know that exercise helps. Full stop. ๐Ÿ‘Š

There is conflicting in the research ๐Ÿ”ฌ about what ๐ญ๐ฒ๐ฉ๐ž of exercise is best.

But for me, the conflicting evidence for different forms of exercise just reinforces the fact that most exercise works in some capacity.

When I work with patients, I always encourage them to find a form exercise that they enjoy.

๐‘พ๐’‰๐’š?

Because it's the form of exercise that they are most likely to be consistent with and still be doing in 5 years time..

And therefore, deliver them the best results in managing their back problem ๐Ÿ“ˆ

Colin first came to us in back in 2021 for low back pain.

Colin is a builder and like nay of our patients, he had experienced the pain from lifting something heavy.

Having a physical demanding job is a risk factor for experiencing ๐Œ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ญ๐ข-๐…๐š๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐‹๐จ๐ฐ ๐๐š๐œ๐ค ๐๐š๐ข๐ง (the most common form of low back pain).

With many risk factors, such as low exercise levels ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ or poor sleep habits ๐Ÿ˜ด, we seek to make changes to that aspect of the patients lifestyle.

However, this isn't possible with builders โŒ ๐Ÿ‘ท

In this instance, we look to focus intensively on rehab to make sure that the patient's spine is as resilient ๐Ÿ’ช as it can be...

And we often look to offer some degree of ongoing support ๐Ÿง‘โ€โš•๏ธ

In Colin's case, he fund that a check up once every 12 weeks keeps him feeling good and working hard!

Low back pain care needs to be specifically tailored to the individual patient's needs and this is a perfect example of that.
