It's been a beautiful start to my yoga classes in Ditchling this week.

The sun was shining, the essential oils were captivating and the Yoga practice was mindful.

We really connected to our inner wisdom this morning, finding stretgh in stillness and a soft focus that brought ease to the mind.

The essential oils we explored were:

Clary Sage, to clear the mind and enable us to reconnect to our instincts and feel reinspired.

Amyris, also know as West Indian Sandlewood. This lovely base note oil supported us in entering a meditative state where we could allow our creativity to flow, strengthening our courage to follow our inner resolve.

And now I'm moving on to planning a beautiful array of oils for my special

πŸ§˜πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Weekly yoga classes start again this week and after a packed morning of admin it's been such a joy to get stuck into what I really love.

πŸ“š Planning my classes by dipping into my favourite yoga texts, mudra inspiration and chakra wisdom.

😁 Joyfully emptying my essential oil box out to explore oils for this week's theme, the throat chakra and make a list of oils I need to stock up on.

⏳ And now some time to gather everything together and then have a little play before this evenings class ✨

πŸ™ 18 yogis came together last night for a wonderful evening of gentle & restorative yoga, essential oils, mediation and deep rest πŸ’™

Followed by tea and my famous homemade treats β˜•

We enjoyed Patchouli and Vetiver essential oils. Both know for their calming restful properties, so perfect for this evening of nervous system reset.

Both oils also have no contraindications, so for those yoga teachers out there using essential oils, these two are great to add to your collection ❀️

I can't think of a better way to share my passion for Yoga than with this lovely lot ✨

πŸ’™ This week we have arrived at the Throat Chakra, Vishudda.

✨ We're exploring how we connect to our truth, speak it with kindness and release the unsaid.

πŸ§˜πŸ»β€β™€οΈ In our asana (yoga postures) we have started with next stretches and moved on to twists and asana with a focus on opening the front of the body.

🌊 Ujjayi (Ocean breath) has been the focus of this sound led practice. Our internal πŸ•‰οΈ

β˜€οΈ Bergamot and Lavender essential oils have been enjoyed to support us releasing pent up feelings and energy. Whilst encouring self expression and optimism.

πŸͺ˜ We've explored body percussion to release and help energy flow.

A full blog about this Chakra work will be coming your way on Friday ✨

What essential oils are you exploring in your yoga classes this week? I'd love to know πŸ’™

πŸ’œ Lavender essential oil is one of my favourites β€” and I’ve just had a great question from one of my lovely Essential Oils for Yoga Teachers CPD graduates:

"I’m about to offer a yoga class with an essential oil blend, and I have a pregnant student attending. Is Bergamot, Lavender, and Lemon okay in a carrier oil?"

Here’s my take πŸ‘‡

✨ Bergamot and Lemon have no known contraindications in pregnancy.

✨ Lavender is generally gentle β€” but it’s also a mild emmenagogue (meaning it can stimulate or regulate menstruation).

Now… it’s very unlikely to cause an issue, but I always err on the side of caution. So I suggested checking:

1️⃣ Which trimester she’s in
β†’ I would usually avoid Lavender in the first trimester

2️⃣ Whether there’s any history of miscarriage
β†’ If yes, I’d recommend being extra cautious and avoiding it

If asking those questions doesn’t feel appropriate or comfortable, a beautiful alternative is Geranium 🌸

I know many women safely use Lavender in later pregnancy (and even during labour for its calming, uplifting qualities) β€” but safety and sensitivity always come first πŸ’«

πŸ˜‚ I have loved teaching this week, from belly laughs to joyful comments about how much yoga is have enjoyed this week's class, it's had it all!

🧘🏻 I teach 7 classes a week, and no 2 are the same, but over the last 4 weeks we have been exploring the chakra's, starting at the root, this week we arrived at the heart, Anahata πŸ’š

We explored brand new pranayama, we enjoyed Laurel and Rose essential oils and we balanced everything with a manifestation rooted in self love and understand ✨

If youd like to read more, check out my Chakra Yoga Blog (part 4 this week in the series) where I go a little deeper.

Be kind to yourself and others, Heather

🟑 The Solar Plexus chakra is a real invitation to step into your personal power and strength.

🧘🏻This week our yoga class theme is the Solar Plexus and physically the practice is strong, big and held. Very different to last weeks flow in the Sacral Chakra.

πŸ‘€ So in exploring oils that complimented the Solar Plexus I was looking for essential oils that would uplift, boost confidence and help fortify resolve.

πŸ‹ Lemon and Pine work beautifully together to do this.

Lemon energises and lifts the spirits, and pines gentle woody fragrance brings determination and resolve.

I'll be writing a blog on Friday about our yoga journey through the Sacral Chakra this week. If you've missed it you can catch up on the first two weeks in my blog.

✨ Before using essential oils in your yoga class there are a few things you should consider ✨

✨ Where you source your oils from. There are lots of reputable companies out there. Take your time before you buy as not oils are equal.

✨ Inhalation is the best and safest way to introduce your yogis to essential oils. Just one drop of oil onto a cotton pad for each student is enough.

✨ Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin. These are powerful substances, follow the recommendations of the supplier for dilution rates.

✨ Essential oils can be phototaxic, or can bring on menstruation, or lower blood pressure. Get to know the oils your using, so you can keep yourself and your students safe.

✨ If you'd like to learn more about essential oils safely for Yoga students, I've written a blog post with more guidence.

You can read it via the link in my bio ✨

Yoga, essential oils and the chakras

This week in class were exploring the solar plexus chakra. Our centre of personal power, where we sit in the world and what our calling really is.

Having started at the root 2 weeks ago, we have our foundation in place, last weeks flow of energy and ideas with the sacral chakra leads us perfectly to this week.

We've had the time to digest what's arisen and now take that forward to something more defined.

I love the way scent helps to anchor our attention in the moment, they're such a beautiful way to deepen a yoga practice and really ground us in the moment.

This week's oils are Lemon chosen for its uplifting and clarifying properties. It helps disperse doubt and engourages us to really trust those sacral chakra instincts.

And Pine, it's reawaken our connection to the lives we want to lead. Restoring our self confidence and fortifying our belief in the importance of our own desires and needs.

What scents are you leaving for this week? I'd love to know, Heather

I want more people to enjoy yoga because its amazing!

I love yoga, (but I haven't always...)

My passion for this awesome practice came through my experience of Pregnancy, Mum & Baby, then Vinyasa Flow Yoga. And that's exactly what yoga is, a practice, it's not about touching your toes, folding yourself in two or standing on your head. It's about connecting to your body and breath, and stopping to really listen to yourself for a change. Taking the time to switch off from the rest of the world and really tune in to what your own body is telling you.

I am by no means a perfect yogi, I can't do all of the advanced poses and on a Monday morning my balance is less Tree and more spaghetti. But I love it! Come wobbly days or sturdy days, yoga gives me the physical and mental space I need to get the most out of life. I'm not the most serious yoga teacher, but I am incredibly passionate about how much this ancient art has to offer everyone. All are welcome on the mat at Deaville Yoga.
