A slow start to the year but has been an amazing one as just last week I connected through Ancestry, with my mums cousins in Australia who she had lost contact with. It’s been amazing exchanging photos and knowledge.

While in Epsom I discovered my great great grandmother had also been baptised in the church and this is the very basin she was baptised in. As well as this beautiful window her family dedicated to a family member who fell during ww1.

While down in Sutton also took a 10mins te train trip to the beautiful Epsom to see this wonderful church where my great grandparents got married.

On a wonderful ancestral trip to Sutton near London in England and was astounded by the fact I was able to see this beautiful ancient church from the 1700’s where my great great grandparents married. Unfortunately we couldn’t go inside but was worth the trip

Continuing from my last post, not only has internet become faster since I started in 1998 but the amount of information online now has vastly improved especially in Scotland.

Not only do we have birth/marriage/death records online dating back to the late 1500’s but we also have census results, military records, some old criminal records and adverts like the one below, allowing people to see how their ancestors lived and worked or in the case below just how big their ancestors company was.

As it comes up to 25 years of doing family tree research, I can’t help but reflect on how the technology I have used to research has changed over the years and how much easier it has become to find more details and information from countries that were far beyond imagination when I first started out aged 15. I still remember moaning to my mum because she made a call while I was downloading a picture of a birth certificate from a distant cousin and her call had disconnected the internet and cancelled the download after thirty minutes of waiting on it finishing and I had to start the download again.

Been a busy week using the 1921 census to help find out information about a clients father for them, gave them a surprise to find he did the same job at 19 as he did when he died aged 56.

The census has been useful to help give people a new level of insight into their family trees and with more countries going digital with their past records it’s a wonderful time to trace ancestry and to find out unknown family members.

Get your clicking fingers ready: the 1921 Census is coming to ScotlandsPeople!

The 1921 census will be opened at 9 am tomorrow morning, available to search and view. Find your parents, grandparents or even earlier generations among 4.8 million individual records.

For the first time, open up 150,000 searchable scanned images of the original handwritten census books detailing each address, from the very finest hotels to the most cramped tenements and from ships at sea to people living in tents.

Get a glimpse of what life was like for people in 1921: where they lived, who they lived with, their occupations and more. This census also recorded where people worked, if children had been orphaned and who was eligible for benefit under the National Insurance Act of 1911.

Investigate for yourself from tomorrow morning...
