Tips for Yellow Fever exposure

Saturday in town and we have spaces for consultation unusually!
Don't overlook a Travel consultation pre-holiday booking if you have complex health issues as it may be wise to consider ruling out certain locations before you pay your deposit.

£20 for a security of mind consultation could iron out common confusion around the need for and wisdom of having a Yellow Fever vaccine.

Don't throw out your old Yellow fever International Certification of Vaccine Prevention (IVCP) because it is still valid even if the expiry date has past.

Why? Because since 2017 the World Health Organisation has agreed with all immigration authorities that any expired YF cert must be honoured as valid. Enough research has shown in the last 100yrs that one dose for lifelong immunity is sufficient unless the first dose was received before the age of 2.

This is the page to keep a back up copy of in your personal possessions, in case the original is lost. For a small fee, proof of this completed double-page will enable the re-issue of a new ICVP without a further unnecessary injection.

Settling in nicely to the new clinic upstairs in Superdrug's brand new flagship store at Unit 21 Frenchgate, Doncaster where flu vaccines for winter 23/4 are selling fast.

Lots of space and air conditioning for the comfort of any squeamish patient and everything is shiny and new (apart from me🤨). Also celebrating my 2 year anniversary with Superdrug, saving money on walking to work and being at the centre of our market town every day!

Had to share this gorgeous picture drawn by 6yr old patient yesterday on visiting me for her Yellow Fever vaccination before a trip to Nigeria.

Pictured from left to right are her Mum, patient and me shouting at the mosquitos to go away!

EIGHT TOP TIPS FOR A SMOOTH EXPERIENCE

Thought I'd make a list of the common hitches or barriers to having a successful appointment with us at Superdrug.

Some are silly (we all have bad days) and occasionally just out and out frustrating but we do our best not to turn you away.

1. Turning up on the wrong day. We have to give priority to those scheduled but if possible we will re-jig and space we can for you.

2. Not having completed to the point online where you should receive a confirmation email. If you do not get the email you did not complete your booking! Any online request for financial details is merely to avoid the possibility of people not turning up. A non- attendance is fined £20 but we do not use your financial details for any other reason and payment is taken at the till after consultation.

3. Forgetting your glasses! (You will have documents to read and sign)

4. Essentially having ID as passport or driving license for any blood test. And please don't fast from water if you come for a blood test. Hydrate for us to access healthily juicy veins.

5. Bring a full child's birth certificate and red book for any under 16 year old accompanied by an adult. (One adult for each child). We cannot assess and vaccinate non verified minors. Bring your own parental or guardian ID to verify your right to give permission to vaccinate. We do not vaccinate random children.

6. Surprisingly, having no means of payment. Please don't overlook this one!

7. Helpfully, please bring a print out of all historical vaccines which you can request from your GP receptionist. It helps us complete a history and all the pieces of your immunity jigsaw puzzle and offers you a takeaway understanding of the time frames and expires of all regimes you have had or still need.

8. Know your detailed itinerary and likely activities. Are you risk averse or more blase? This helps us take the right tack with you.

That's it! We make it as interesting, informative and stress free as we can but there are guidelines we can't cross however hard you may plead.

Now go and rank us on Trust Pilot please and spread the love.

Looking to your next job or overseas tuition or voluntary placement and not sure if you've got that edge?

Make sure of all the likely occupational health vaccines to get you good and ready to go in your chosen career whether that be healthcare, social care, tattoo artist, professional boxer or cleaner just as a few of the possible examples.

Making enquiries early on might just give a head start on the rest of the competition and give you personal peace of mind - whether they are an expectation or not. Check in for advice with us as an occupational health consultation. (With no guarantees these costs will be met by employers/future employers it is always worth checking first what might be available on the NHS through your own GP practice).

Schistosomiasis or bilharzia (caused by nematode worms a.k.a. blood fluke infected water snails)

Did you know it could be dangerous to paddle, wade or swim in freshwater abroad? As a rule try to stick to hotel provided chlorinated pools or seawater with its natural saline antiseptic.

Risky countries include Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Brazil. Lake Malawi has been associated with many UK diagnoses.

If you cannot avoid wading out - to a small boat for instance - please take a small hand towel to rub yourself dry immediately. It's tempting to leave your skin to dry by natural evaporation but you might just give those parasites time to pe*****te the human skin and move into internal organs causing havoc long term before you've even realised.

As our thoughts start turning toward the summer holidays, why not tack on a browse of the travel stands in our store to your Superdrug travel consultation ?

For example, we have our own branded DEET insect repellent spray in 50% strength at a very competitive price compared with a similar volume bottles of other branded products. The key thing is the active ingredient DEET - a major element of staying safe and healthy from harmful diseases spread by biting insects such as ticks and mosquitos. Insect repellent is a fundamental aspect of enjoying a healthy holiday and avoiding long-term unwanted consequences of visiting hot and humid climates.

Nice graphic of the Mental Capacity Act.

We always respect the individual needs of the client and their individual choices, health history, risk aversion and even their budgetary constraints. Our approach is to respect and advocate and offer the best information available. When a difficult decision arises it is always best to have time to run something past your partner or GP, another family member or sometimes gain written consent form a consultant involved in your care. You are welcome to bring a trusted person to a consultation with you.

Providing your child with a Chickenpox vaccine course can relieve the uncertainty of their likelihood of suffering and the need for carers to take time off work. Some parents of children with problems communicating find this service reassuring. All cases are considered on an individual basis with advice facts and potential side effects taken into consideration. Parent must attend personally with their child for a full chicken pox consultation and please bring in full vaccine history, child's birth certificate and parental ID. We can play your child's favourite TV character show as a distraction just to make things a little easier!
