Important: Our approach to face masks within our hospitals 🔈
Over recent weeks, there has been understandable discussion about face masks in response to the prevalence of respiratory viruses and seasonal illnesses, particularly as some NHS organisations have introduced mandatory masking.
We have taken a careful and sensible approach, reviewing the evidence and national guidance alongside local data and a Trust-wide risk assessment led by our infection prevention and control specialists.
Based on this assessment, we are not requiring routine mask wearing within our hospitals at this time.
We believe this is a proportionate and sensible approach given the current level of risk and the controls already in place.
In very specific clinical circumstances, face masks may be required. This will always be clinically directed, with masks supplied as part of infection prevention and control measures. This includes situations such as outbreaks, caring for patients with known or suspected infections, certain higher-risk clinical areas, or specific procedures.
Preventing the spread of respiratory viruses and seasonal illnesses relies on consistently getting the basics of infection prevention and control right. Within our hospitals, this includes hand hygiene, isolation and cohorting where required, effective environmental cleaning and decontamination, good ventilation and professional clinical judgement.
We are prioritising these fundamentals and further backing them with investment. This winter, the Trust has committed an additional £1.3 million in winter funding, with a proportion allocated to enhanced cleaning and decontamination measures across our hospitals.
The public also has an important role to play. If you are unwell with cold, flu or other respiratory symptoms (and do not need urgent care and attention), please consider whether your visit can be delayed or advice sought before attending.
When in hospital, clean your hands regularly, cover coughs and sneezes, and dispose of tissues properly. We also encourage people to take up the offer of flu vaccination.
We recognise that other NHS organisations may take a different approach based on local circumstances, and we respect those decisions. When attending or visiting other healthcare settings, please follow the local guidance in place.
Most importantly, we respect the individual choice of colleagues, patients and visitors to wear a mask, and we ask everyone to respect those choices. Poor or disrespectful behaviour is not acceptable and will be challenged.
For those who wish to wear a face covering, the Trust will endeavour to make them available at the main entrances of each site, as well as in outpatient areas.

Please remember, where masks are worn by choice, they should always cover both the nose and mouth and should not be lowered for extended periods of time.
This position will continue to be kept under review and adapted if the risk picture changes.
