For World Stroke Day, we’re highlighting some of the fantastic people who help stroke patients on their recovery journey 💛

Meet Sam, a Speech and Language Therapist working within the Stroke and Neurology teams at DBTH.

Speech and language therapy plays a vital role in stroke recovery. A stroke can affect a person’s ability to speak, understand language, read, write, or swallow safely. Therapists like Sam support patients to regain these essential skills, using personalised exercises, communication tools, and strategies tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

Sam said: “My favourite thing about my role is working closely with patients and their families to set goals that are meaningful to them. I also enjoy being part of a multidisciplinary team – working alongside occupational therapists, physiotherapists, music therapists, and dietitians. There are so many different roles that can contribute to a patient’s recovery.”

For World Stroke Day, we’re celebrating the incredible colleagues who support patients throughout their stroke recovery journey 💛

Occupational Therapists within stroke rehabilitation play a vital role as part of the multidisciplinary team, helping patients regain independence and achieve their own goals. They work with patients to improve cognition, vision, mood, and functional ability, assessing activities of daily living such as washing, dressing, and kitchen tasks. They also assess home environments and provide appropriate equipment to ensure patients can return home safely and confidently.

Laura Clarkson, Occupational Therapist within the Rehab Ward at Montagu Hospital, shared: “I feel really privileged to work in stroke rehabilitation – it’s an honour to see patients progress along their recovery journey. I really enjoy getting to know patients and building a rapport with them, but my favourite part is seeing when our patients are able to return to their own homes.”

At DBTH, recovery after stroke is a true team effort – combining the skills, compassion, and dedication of many different professionals, all focused on helping patients rebuild confidence, independence, and quality of life.

It’s World Stroke Day 💛 Meet Abbie - the Trust's first Music Therapist!
Abbie's role is to support the recovery of patients after a stroke.

Abbie said: “Music has so many healing elements. My role is to help you regain speech, strengthen muscles, and walk with more ease—all while having fun with music. You don’t need to sing or play an instrument—just bring yourself!”

What is Music Therapy? It’s not just about enjoying music (though that’s a lovely bonus!)—it’s a powerful way to:
🎤 Improve communication with techniques like singing for speech recovery.
👌 Enhance motor skills by playing instruments.
💨Use breathing exercises for vocal clarity.
🚶Regain mobility with rhythm-based activities.

Patients are offered music therapy if suitable and as part of their stroke recovery pathway.

One of our patients, Gary Marshall, has gone above and beyond for our Urology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

After donating £1,000 from a comedy show in March, Gary raised an additional £3,500 with his September show - bringing his total donation to £4,500!

A huge thank you to Gary for his incredible generosity and to everyone who supported his fundraising shows. Your kindness will make a real difference for patients in our one-stop prostate clinic.

It’s World Stroke Day 💛 and we are sharing the fantastic people who help our stroke survivors in their recovery journey.

Meet John, a Stroke Survivor Volunteer on the Rehab ward at Montagu Hospital. John volunteers twice a week, offering conversation and advice drawn from his own experience as a former patient on the same ward.

John said: "I was approached by the therapy staff to become a volunteer, knowing that talking to both patients and their families about my experience of stroke would be invaluable.

"During my visits I offer one to one and group conversation, experience sharing, advice and company. I also join in with the day room activities, music therapy group and help when the activities coordinator isn't on site. I've set quizzes and puzzles and like to tell a joke or two!"

It’s World Stroke Day! 💛 This year’s focus is on stroke recovery.

Meet Michelle, Activities Coordinator at Montagu Hospital’s Rehab ward. She helps patients take part in social and therapeutic activities – from chair exercises to quizzes – supporting recovery beyond traditional therapy.

Michelle says: "I provide a space for patients to socialise and find peer support, while continuing to work on their skills. I contribute to the spirit of Rehab 2, helping patients focus on recovery beyond therapy. The feedback has been wonderful – patients tell us the morning activities have helped their physical and cognitive recovery, as well as improving communication and confidence."

At DBTH, recovery isn’t just about therapy – it’s about connection, support, and rebuilding confidence every day.

Next week we're heading to the Doncaster Dome for one of the highlights of the year – our annual Star Awards. 🌟

The much-anticipated event will bring together more than 400 colleagues from across the organisation to celebrate the people, teams and projects that make an exceptional difference every day. From unsung heroes to passionate fundraisers, and from those driving innovation and sustainability to colleagues delivering outstanding care, the awards recognise the very best of DBTH.

Winners will be revealed at the ceremony on Thursday 6 November, marking an evening of celebration, recognition and appreciation for the hard work and dedication shown by colleagues across all areas of the Trust.

Suzy Brain England OBE, Chair of the Board, said: “I am delighted that next week we will gather to recognise the colleagues whose commitment, compassion and innovation make a real difference to the lives of our patients and the strength of our services.

"Our Star Awards are about more than trophies: They are a moment to shine a light on excellence, to say thank you, and to inspire everyone that their contribution matters.”

This year’s shortlist spans all areas of the Trust, featuring clinical and non-clinical teams, fundraisers, learners, sustainability champions and more. Categories include Unsung Hero, Change Champion, Fundraising Champion, Team Spirit, Health Equality Champion, Medical and Clinical Team of the Year, Corporate and Non-Clinical Team of the Year, Sustainability Champion, Teaching Hospital Award, Learner of the Year, Patient Champion and Star of the Year.

Among the nominees are colleagues and teams such as the Community Midwifery Team, Rehab 1 Therapy Team, Grounds and Gardens Team, Diabetic Eye Screening Team, and the Mexborough Elective Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence, all recognised for their dedication and contribution to patient care and service improvement.

The Star Awards are made possible thanks to the generosity of local sponsors and partners, as well as funding from proceeds of the Trust’s internal Staff Lottery, which supports activities and initiatives that benefit colleagues and patients across DBTH.

Suzy added: “This year’s celebration will be particularly special for me, as it will be my final Star Awards before I depart the Trust after nine years as Chair. It has been an immense privilege to serve this organisation and witness the incredible commitment of our colleagues. The Star Awards capture the very best of who we are – caring, dedicated and proud to serve our communities. Good luck to all of our nominees.”

Celebrating sustainability at DBTH! 🌍

The Trust is proud to share its green achievements and the teamwork that’s making our hospitals more sustainable.

Reaching a major milestone: the removal of desflurane and piped nitrous oxide from all Trust sites — anaesthetic gases with a high global warming potential.
✅ Significantly cutting our carbon footprint
✅ Saving the Trust around £8,000 a year

Led by a brilliant multidisciplinary team - Padma Gopal, Consultant Anaesthetist, Andrew Ferguson, Head of Medical Technical Services and James Hutchinson, Head of Estates, their collaboration ensured a smooth transition while maintaining the highest standards of patient care.

This achievement supports the NHS goal to reach Net Zero by 2040 and marks a key step in delivering the updated DBTH Green Plan 2025–2028 🌱

❤️ "21/04/2025 my beautiful Emily entered the world 🩷
🌸 A Huge Thank You to Bassetlaw Hospital Labour Ward 🌸

I just wanted to say the biggest thank you to the incredible team on the labour ward at Bassetlaw Hospital. From the moment I arrived, I was made to feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for. Every member of staff was so kind, calm, and professional — they made such a difference during one of the most important moments of my life.

A special mention has to go to student midwife Emily, who was absolutely amazing. She never left my side, reassured me through every moment, and went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and confident. Her compassion, patience, and dedication truly stood out, and I’ll never forget how much that meant to me.
Thank you all for the outstanding care and kindness — I’ll always be grateful. 💕

If Emily would like me to write anything that may help her in her training, please don’t hesitate to contact me x"

❤️ "Just want to message to say about how amazing my midwife was in theatre after my emergency c-section back in June. Midwife Robyn was amazing. My labour didn’t go to plan and she could see how nervous and anxious I was and helped me stay calm during, and after. She also helped comfort my partner as she could see how worried and upset he was. She’s a true gem and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better during a traumatic time. I can’t thank her enough!"

❤️ "Hi, I just wanted to pass on our gratitude to Katie and Sarah, our midwives, at Bassetlaw.

They delivered our baby girl on 2nd October and were fantastic. They were calming and patient at the right times and used humour at the right times to help me get through Labour.

I have had both of our girls at Bassetlaw hospital and this experience was also matched by the birth of our older girl in 2023. Can’t thank you all enough for your hard work, but specifically Katie and Sarah for making my husband and I feel so at ease and comfortable and ensuring the safe arrival of our beautiful baby girl Ruby 🤍"

Families with babies receiving care on our Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) at Bassetlaw Hospital are set to benefit from a generous donation from the Emily Harris Foundation.

This year the charity has delivered a range of thoughtful items including welcome packs for parents, snacks, breastfeeding pillows, sibling activity packs and even a Polaroid camera to help families capture special moments during their baby’s stay.

Their ongoing support also helps parents with travel costs, team training and access to psychological support – easing some of the pressures that come with having a baby in hospital.

Caroline Davies, Ward Manager for SCBU, said: “These items will make such a difference to the experience of our families, helping them feel welcome, supported and cared for.”

A huge thank you to Claire Harris and everyone at the Emily Harris Foundation for their kindness and continued dedication to improving care for our smallest patients and their families. 💙
