Worksop residents urged to attend vital diabetic eye screening event ⬇️

People living with diabetes in Worksop are being encouraged to attend a special “Super Saturday” diabetic eye screening event, taking place at Worksop Library on Saturday 28 February, from 9.30am to 3pm.

The event is being organised by the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Diabetic Eye Screening Programme to help improve attendance among local patients who may have missed their regular appointments. More than 100 people in the area have not attended their annual screening for three years or more.

Diabetic eye screening is a free NHS service offered to people aged 12 and over who have diabetes. It checks for early signs of diabetic retinopathy - a condition that can damage the blood vessels at the back of the eye and, if left untreated, can lead to sight loss.

In the early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Many people do not notice any changes to their vision until damage has already occurred. Regular screening allows problems to be detected early, when treatment is most effective.

All eligible patients will receive a yellow invitation letter with details of their appointment.

Jemima Beaumont, Failsafe and Engagement Lead for the Doncaster & Bassetlaw Diabetic Eye Screening Programme, said: “Diabetic eye screening is one of the most important ways we can protect people’s sight. It’s quick, painless, and could prevent serious vision problems in the future. We know life gets busy and appointments can be missed, which is why events like this are so important. We’d really encourage anyone who’s been putting it off to come along and get checked.”

Patients who cannot attend their allocated appointment time are encouraged not to worry. They can either contact the screening team in advance or attend on the day and be seen where possible.

People can rearrange their appointment by calling 01302 642596 or emailing dbh-tr.ddesp@nhs.net

Walk-in patients are welcome between 9.30am and 3pm, and the team will do their best to accommodate everyone.

The screening programme hopes the event will help more people access this vital service and reduce the risk of avoidable sight loss across the community.

Last year, we were delighted to partner with the wonderful people at Ziniz Restaurant & Wine Bar and Visit Bawtry as part of our annual festive appeal, Our Shining Stars.

With their incredible support, we brought our appeal to Bawtry for the first time, taking our fundraising beyond the hospital grounds. It was amazing to be welcomed to the community and spread awareness of our charity!

We are thrilled to share that this new partnership raised over £3,000 worth of star sponsorship from Albemarle Homes, RJ Electrical & Security, Freemasons of Bawtry, Ziniz Restaurant & Wine Bar and Visit Bawtry. All funds raised from our appeal are directly reinvested into our hospitals, improving patient care, facilities and staff wellbeing.

We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to reach the wider community, and extend our heartfelt thanks to the Bawtry community and local businesses for making this possible!

Happy Wednesday, everybody! ❤️

We're kicking it off with some lovely feedback for our maternity and theatres staff at DRI:

"I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the staff involved in the birth of our beautiful baby girl, Elsie, who arrived on 14 January at DRI.

"From start to finish, I received amazing care. I was initially admitted to Ward M1 for an induction and was looked after by the wonderful midwives Nikita and Elle, and student midwife Rebecca — all fantastic. A special thank you to midwife Dee, whose bedside manner was exceptional. She really put me at ease, listened to me, and explained everything with such compassion, patience and kindness, despite being very busy and stretched.

"I had always hoped for a natural birth, however I ended up having an emergency C-section and our baby was delivered with the help of the lovely Alex.

"My apologies that I didn’t quite catch all of the theatre staff’s names — there were so many — but every single person I encountered spoke to me calmly and with empathy, turning what could have been a very overwhelming and scary experience into something much more calm and controlled. Your light-heartedness and warmth put me at ease and calmed my nerves no end. A special shout-out to the anaesthetist, who I think may have been called Sandeep. He spoke to me so kindly and calmly throughout and really reassured both me and my partner — I can’t thank him enough.

"Postnatally, I received the most wonderful care and support on M1/2, despite how incredibly stretched the staff are.

"Healthcare assistants Alice and Rima helped me back up on my feet on the first night when I felt rock bottom, and they both gave me amazing support and advice with breastfeeding. I will never forget their patience, empathy and kindness — thank you.

"Thank you to Bobby, the midwife who looked after me for the first two nights. Despite again being incredibly busy, she took the time to provide patient-centred care for me, Elsie and my partner when we all felt a little clueless and overwhelmed.

"Alisha, Jade and Amy were all wonderful — I can’t thank you enough.

"Lastly, midwives Ellie and Rebecca, who looked after me during my last couple of days on the ward, took the time to discuss everything in depth with me despite once again having many other patients to tend to. They answered all my questions professionally and without judgement, and really made me feel listened to and advocated for.

"Sorry if I have forgotten anyone — I blame it on sleep deprivation!

"I know you all do this day in, day out, but it was one of the scariest days of my life. However, thanks to you all, we both came home healthy and together, and I’ll never forget you. ❤️ We can’t put into words how much we appreciate all your care — you truly gave Elsie and me the best support. So once again, thank you all so much 🌸🤍"

A huge well done to all staff involved in caring for this mother and daughter - and how cute is little smiley Elsie? 🥹

Could you give a little time to make a big difference? Your local hospital is looking for volunteers 🔍

We're currently recruiting volunteers at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), offering local people the chance to make a meaningful difference to patients, staff and visitors.

A range of volunteer roles are available across DRI for those who want to help support some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

The Trust is looking for caring and compassionate individuals with good communication skills and a willingness to help make patients feel welcomed and supported.

Volunteer opportunities are available in several areas, including the Emergency Department, the Discharge Lounge, Pharmacy as well as meeting and greeting patients and visitors.

Karen Jessop, Chief Nurse at DBTH, said: “Our volunteers are the heart of the Trust. They play a vital role in helping our services run smoothly and ensuring care is always delivered in a patient-first way.

“So many of our volunteers have been with us for years, for example, Margo and Yvonne, who have been the first friendly faces for many of our patients coming through our doors for over twenty years. Their commitment to our community is truly inspiring.”

Volunteers across the Trust are also recognised and celebrated each year at a festive volunteer brunch, giving them the chance to enjoy a special thank you and catch up with fellow volunteers.

Dani’s journey from bedbound to walking again 💙

For years, illness took almost everything from Dani Hughes – her independence, her career, and her confidence.

At just 26, Dani’s health declined rapidly due to a neurological condition. Within a year, she was wheelchair-bound and later diagnosed with a neurogenic bladder.

After 15 years of specialist care at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, Dani underwent life-changing surgery earlier this year.

Today, she is learning to walk again for the first time in 13 years.

“The last time I walked was 13 years ago. It’s surreal. I never thought I’d have the chance.”

Now supported by our physiotherapy team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Dani is rebuilding her independence – with hopes of driving and returning to work.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the difference personalised, compassionate NHS care can make.
