This week, our amazing scooter fundraisers are riding their way from the UK to Gibraltar in support of the Doncaster Neonatal Unit! 🛵

The group of riders set off on 7 September and will arrive in Gibraltar on 10 September, taking on an epic 1,700-mile journey on their scooters to raise vital funds for our tiniest patients.

They’ve already raised an amazing £5,000 and are now aiming for £7,500. You can support their journey here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/ride-to-the-rock

All funds raised will go to the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals' Charity Mini Marvels Appeal, which will support the Neonatal and Special Baby Care units at our hospitals by funding equipment, creating comforting spaces for families and offering support and resources to siblings.

Let’s cheer them on every mile of the way! 🛵✨

A new Clinical Research Hub has officially opened at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), giving patients across Doncaster and Bassetlaw greater access to cutting-edge studies and treatments that have not previously been available locally.

Clinical research involves studying health and illness in people to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat conditions. By volunteering to take part, patients may benefit from the latest treatment innovations while also helping to improve care for future generations.

The Hub provides a welcoming, purpose-built environment for research participants - enhancing their comfort and experience - while giving clinicians the space and facilities they need to deliver high-quality studies.

DBTH already runs a broad and diverse research portfolio, covering maternity and paediatrics, surgical specialties such as orthopaedics and breast oncology, and medical areas including cardiology, gastroenterology, stroke, respiratory medicine, diabetes, renal care, dermatology, rheumatology, anaesthetics, critical care, and haematology.

The Trust is also engaged in research across urgent and emergency care, vascular surgery, neurology, as well as studies that involve colleague participation.

Among its flagship projects is the Born and Bred in Doncaster (BaBi-D) study, which launched in 2022 and has already recruited more than 3,500 participants, including expectant mothers and babies.

BaBi-D collects health and care data to build a picture of life in Doncaster, helping researchers and clinicians understand local health needs and reduce health inequalities. The study has also engaged families through innovative activities, such as teddy-bear picnics at local family hubs, to ensure research reflects community voices and priorities.

Professor Sam Debbage, Director of Education and Research at DBTH, said: "This new Clinical Research Hub represents a significant step forward in our strategic ambition to become a leading centre for education and research. By providing a dedicated space for research activity, we can increase access for our patients to new treatments, improve the experience of those taking part in studies, and demonstrate our commitment to embedding a culture of research and innovation.

"It lays the foundations for DBTH to build on, ensuring that the benefits of research are felt not only by our patients and colleagues, but also by our wider communities across South Yorkshire."

The Hub, alongside studies such as BaBi-D and DBTH’s extensive research programme, underscores the organisation’s commitment to locally relevant, inclusive research that delivers real impact for patients, colleagues, and the community.

Suzy Brain England OBE, Chair of the Board at DBTH, said: "The Clinical Research Hub shows the strength of our ambition as an organisation. By investing in research infrastructure now, we are creating opportunities that will benefit patients today and in the future, while positioning DBTH as a place where innovation and excellence can thrive."

The Hub will act as a platform for future growth - enabling DBTH to further increase research activity, attract new opportunities, and strengthen its role as a leading centre of research excellence within the region.

The government will be carrying out a national test of the UK Emergency Alerts system today at 3pm.

The test alert will be sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones and compatible tablets across the UK. Devices will make a distinct, siren-like sound for up to 10 seconds, including on phones switched to silent mode. Phones will also vibrate and display a message about the test.

You won't need to take any emergency action as this is alert will be for test purposes only. You can however, acknowledge the alert when it sounds on your device.

In a real emergency, you should stop what you are doing (if it is safe to do so) when the alert sounds and carry out the advised action.

Today’s the day! 🌄

22 of Karen “Kazza” Graham’s family, friends and colleagues are climbing Snowdon in her memory.

Karen dedicated 30 years to Doncaster maternity services and is remembered as a kind, passionate and caring colleague. Though she wasn’t able to make the climb herself, her loved ones are completing the challenge for her – and raising vital funds for the Haematology Ward at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where she received care. 💙

We’re wishing the team the very best of luck as they take on this special tribute in her honour.

🌟 STAR OF THE MONTH 🌟

A huge congratulations to our May Star of the Month, Lindsey Arthur! 🥳

Lindsey is a Play Specialist on the Children's Ward at DRI. Earlier today she was presented with her award by Chief People Officer, Zoe Lintin, and her supportive ward team 💙

Her colleague’s moving nomination says it all:

"When we had a death on the ward, Lindsey went above and beyond to make memories for the family all day long, making the family laugh and have a nice time making memories with their baby. She was so kind and empathetic and caring towards the family, making sure they were ready to do the memory making and doing it in their own time.

"Lindsey goes above and beyond for all patients she encounters, allowing all children and their families to feel more at ease when receiving care but this day she was just incredible, she really made the family as comfortable as possible in her company, and put them first. She took such a sad sad day and made everything she did into something special so that the parents would remember the good, she made sure they had every memory art made possible and handled the child with such care and kindness, she made a massive difference that day, and I will forever feel lucky to have worked alongside her during that sad shift.

"Her work is admirable and she should be so proud of herself for how she handled herself and her care that day."

Working under such sad circumstances is incredibly difficult - Lindsey, your compassion, dedication, and commitment to families is an inspiration to us all here at DBTH ❤️

If you or a loved one have received exceptional care at one of our sites and would like to nominate a member of staff or team for a Star of the Month award, you can do so here: https://forms.office.com/e/fZ7qtvNYVH

In memory of her daughter Savannah, who was born sleeping 15 years ago, Doncaster mum Carly Carlisle has raised an incredible £5,100 to support our maternity bereavement team at DBTH.

Carly’s experience of baby loss has inspired years of fundraising with the help of her partner Kieran and children Laila, Tommy and Paige. Her efforts mean more families will have access to memory-making items and improved facilities during their most difficult times.

🗨️ “I’ve done this for Savannah. I want to help people going through what I went through.”

We are so grateful for Carly’s dedication and strength. 💜

Carol was presented with her award by Zara Jones, Deputy Chief Executive. She was nominated by her colleagues. Her nomination refers to the incredible support she gives across both General and Emergency Medicine, where she has stepped up to provide leadership and guidance.

Carol is described as a true team player who contributes to the wider educational group and plays an important role in delivering face-to-face training such as TILS, ALS, and EPALS. She ensures all training is aligned with Trust policies and delivered to the highest standards.
