Why Self-Love Is the Most Important Relationship You’ll Ever Have

Valentine’s Day is often about romantic love, but Galentine’s Day—celebrated on February 13th—is all about appreciating the incredible women in our lives. But what if we took it a step further? What if we made self-love the ultimate priority? Because at the end of the day, the relationship you have with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship in your life.

The Foundation of Every Relationship

We often seek love and validation from others, but the truth is, when you truly love yourself, you cultivate confidence, inner peace, and resilience. You become less reliant on external validation because you already know your worth. This not only improves your self-esteem but also enhances your relationships with others—whether it’s friends, family, or a romantic partner.

Self-Love Is Not Selfish

Many women, especially those juggling careers, relationships, and family, often put themselves last. There’s a common misconception that self-love is selfish, but in reality, taking care of yourself allows you to show up as your best self for others. Just like putting on your oxygen mask first in an airplane emergency, prioritising self-care and self-respect makes you stronger and more capable of giving love to those around you.

Breaking the Cycle of Stress and Burnout

Without self-love, it's easy to fall into a cycle of stress, overcommitment, and exhaustion. When you prioritise yourself—through setting boundaries, saying no when necessary, and engaging in activities that nourish your soul—you prevent burnout. This is particularly important for women in high-stress jobs or those navigating life changes like perimenopause, where stress management is crucial for overall well-being.

How to Cultivate Self-Love

Loving yourself isn’t about perfection; it’s about embracing who you are, flaws and all. Here are a few ways to deepen your self-love practice:

Speak kindly to yourself – Your inner dialogue shapes your reality. Replace self-criticism with compassion.

Prioritise self-care – Whether it’s a relaxing bath, a walk in nature, or booking that long-overdue massage, taking time for yourself is essential.

Set boundaries – Saying no to things that drain you is a powerful act of self-love.

Celebrate yourself – Acknowledge your achievements, big or small. Treat yourself the way you would a dear friend.

This Galentine’s Day, Celebrate You

As you celebrate the amazing women in your life, don’t forget to celebrate yourself, too. You are worthy of love, care, and appreciation—not just from others but from yourself. Because the most important relationship you’ll ever have is the one with yourself. And when you nurture that, every other relationship in your life benefits.

So, this Galentine’s Day, raise a glass to self-love. You deserve it.

“Do you think you can last that whole trip?”

During my 4 laps run round the lake today (10km) I overheard 2 men talking about relationships with 1 giving the other some (in my opinion) great advice.

I hope this is a normal thing and that guys do support each other just like women do.

Ps. Middle distance triathlon training going ok

Why virtual sessions? My clients love it.
I encourage my clients to relax after the session, journal, meditate, or nap to help integrate the experience. This, instead of getting into traffic after the session and running a few errands on the way home. Much better experience for both of us 💕

What daily habits do you have?

Most of my clients already know I like to wind down with a jigsaw at night…

I know I sound like an old woman but it helps release any stress/tension by focusing my thoughts on finding the pieces I need. This gives my chattering brain a rest!

What is it that you daily?

Why did I retrain as a therapist after qualifying as a chartered accountant?

Where do I start?
- Childhood trauma after my dad took his life
- Blamed myself for 30 years
- Felt unworthy
- Needed to prove my existence
- Struggled comparing myself to peers
- Low self-esteem
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Worked hard but never felt like I fit in
- Stress
- Imposter syndrome got the better of me
…and the cycle continued…

Learning about mindfulness at nightschool was the first step…
then I continued to learn complementary therapies to help with stress and anxiety.

Enrolling into a hypnotherapy diploma course which took place at weekends (and then teaching the course myself 5 years later to a group of students wanting to become hypnotherapists in Birmingham).

This was where the transformation happened!!!!

I became fascinated with the human mind, understood anxiety and depression and how to help myself. The day on inner child work was the pivotal moment for me.

This is why I now help others who may be feeling like I once felt.
I am human-I still have rough days but I acknowledge them rather than fight them.

I’m thinking of running another group inner child day to help free that pained child that may still be within us.

Let’s talk about Antidepressants…

The thing is, most of the time when we feel depressed it is due to a situation/circumstance (a trigger). This includes the menopause.

Some people actually have a chemical imbalance and so do rely on antidepressants.

For those with situational feelings of depression please take note. The more we use something, the more we rely on it. Our body can produce its own serotonin and endorphins (natural painkillers). Sometimes we need a little help…and that’s ok but constantly taking tablets means our bodies get lazy at producing what it needs (it’s getting it another way) then when the pain increases, we need to increase our dosage as we can’t produce it ourselves like we used to.
Look at high profile people who have admitted that they are addicted to pain killers…

I’m not saying don’t take antidepressants, I’m saying work on what made you feel depressed. Perhaps it was grief (losing someone or something or even ‘losing yourself’). When you delve into the root cause, you can find a way out. For those of you that don’t want to open Pandora’s box, you don’t have to…in this case, think about the person you can and want to be (the happier, more content you).

Everything changes….situations/circumstances change…change is inevitable. Focus on what you can change!

You got this! You can change your life for the better. If you want to join a community where I talk about stress, anxiety and self esteem more then join my free closed community group - questions can be anonymous (please note I do monitor this group)
