SHARAD RITUCHARYA (autumn routine) π
The science of Ayurveda encourages aligning ourselves with the rhythms of nature. With each season, our mind and body require slight adjustments in diet and lifestyle to sustain homeostasis. We`ll soon be transitioning into the season which gifts us the most stunning array of colours in nature, and what's also known in Ayurveda as the 'Vata phase' of the year (autumn - early winter).
Space and Air are the most prevalent elements this time of year, which can invite drying and cooling energies to our body inside and out. It may present itself as increased dryness in the skin, agitated mind, disturbed sleep, gas, bloating, irregular bowel movement, or anxiety. You can balance these symptoms by adopting a few of these simple yet effective suggestions:
π Tastes to favour; sweet, sour, salty
π Foods; warm, nourishing soups, stews, kitchari, ghee, cooked spiced apples, rice dishes, dates, squash, root veg, oats, bananas, oranges, beetroot, turmeric milk. Avoid ice cold beverages, raw salads, and fridge cold food
π Spices; cloves, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, turmeric. fennel, nutmeg, cardamom
π Before you shower; give yourself a full body
self-massage with warmed sesame oil. A simple tummy massage (clockwise motion), scalp, foot or hand massage are also beneficial
π Yoga; gentle sun salutations, cat-cow, warrior l, warrior Il, tree pose, legs-up-the-wall, child pose, savasana, nadi shodhana pranayama
π Wrap up; sounds obvious, but popping on a hat, scarf and gloves works wonders. Massaging a little oil onto your ears also soothes and protects from the elements
Enjoy the grounding effects of being out in nature this autumn, and be sure to consume as many of the seasonal, restorative foods Mother Earth has to offer!
