Gluten-Free Foods on Prescription
There has been a change to NHS Dorset’s commissioning policy regarding the gluten-free foods. The difficult decision has been made to remove gluten-free foods from the Dorset Medicines Formulary, which means these products will no longer be available on prescription. The decision was ratified by the Dorset Integrated Medicines Optimisation in August 2025 following a public consultation which considered a range of both clinical and social factors, including the wider availability of gluten-free products in food shops (both physical and online), and the need to ensure we deliver best value for money. If someone in receipt of gluten-free prescribed foods and feels there is an exceptional medical reason to receive gluten-free foods on prescription, it is possible to apply for an Individual Funding Request (IFR) via their GP practice.
