Pilates is a low-impact exercise method that focuses on building core strength, flexibility, posture, and body awareness. It was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates, who originally called it Contrology—because it emphasizes controlled, precise movement.

⭐Pilates focuses on

Core strength: Especially the deep abdominal muscles, lower back, hips, and glutes

Posture & alignment: Helps counteract poor posture from sitting or repetitive movements

Controlled movement: Quality over quantity—slow, intentional exercises

Breathing: Coordinated breathing to support movement and muscle engagement

Mind–body connection: Encourages focus and awareness during exercise

MAT Pilates

Performed on the floor, sometimes using small props (bands, balls, rings)

Uses body weight for resistance

WHAT IS A POSTNATAL CLASS A postnatal yoga class with your baby is usually gentle, supportive, and very baby-friendly. Where’s what you can generally expect:

🌸 What we focus on.

Recovery after birth: Movements are designed to help rebuild strength safely, especially in the pelvic floor, deep core, back, and hips.

Gentle stretching: To ease common postnatal tightness (neck, shoulders, chest, lower back—often from feeding and carrying your baby).

Breathing & relaxation: Emphasis on breathwork to support healing, reduce stress, and improve body awareness.

👶 How babies are included

Your baby is usually right there with you—lying on a mat, blanket, or in your arms.

Some poses incorporate your baby (e.g. gentle lifts, cuddles, or movements while holding them).

Babies can sleep, feed, cry, or be changed during class—this is completely normal and expected.

You’re encouraged to respond to your baby whenever needed; the class flows around real life.

🧘‍♀️ What the practice looks like

Mostly slow, accessible poses, often seated, on hands and knees, or lying down. By week 5 in the programme we are incorporating more active and functional exercises .

Minimal or no intense abdominal work (especially early on), with options for diastasis recti and C-section recovery.

Often shorter flows, with pauses to tend to babies.

💬 Class atmosphere

Very non-judgmental and relaxed—no pressure to “keep up.”

Often includes a social element, giving you a chance to connect with other new mums in the Dorchester and Weymouth area.

I offer lots of modifications and individual attention.

⏱ Practical details

Classes are 60 minutes.

You’ll usually be asked to have had medical clearance (commonly around 6 weeks post-birth, later for C-sections).

Bring a blanket for your baby, plus usual baby essentials.

Helps rebuild confidence in your body after birth.

Supports mental wellbeing and can reduce feelings of isolation.

Creates a calm, shared experience for you and your baby.
