🌍 World Lipoedema Day | June 11th 💜
Today we shine a light on Lipoedema—a condition that affects millions of women worldwide but is still widely misunderstood and often misdiagnosed.
What is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic fat disorder that causes an abnormal buildup of fat—typically in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms.
Key Symptoms:
Symmetrical swelling in the legs and/or arms, sparing the hands and feet
Pain, heaviness, or tenderness in the affected limbs
Easy bruising and sensitivity
A disproportionate lower body compared to the upper body
Reduced mobility and fatigue as the condition progresses
What Causes It?
The exact cause is unknown, but hormonal and genetic factors are believed to play a major role. It often begins or worsens during hormonal shifts such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Many women report a family history, suggesting a genetic link.
Why Awareness Matters:
Lipoedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphoedema, leading to years of frustration and ineffective treatments. Early recognition and proper diagnosis are key to managing symptoms, slowing progression, and improving quality of life.
