Did you know your brain has its own “waste clearance” system? It’s called the glymphatic system, and it plays a crucial role in removing toxins, metabolic waste, and excess fluid from the brain—especially during sleep. This system relies on the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and is closely connected to the body’s lymphatic and circulatory systems.

💤 Poor sleep, stress, and inflammation can all reduce glymphatic function, which may contribute to brain fog, fatigue, and even long-term cognitive decline.

✨ Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage is a gentle, rhythmic technique that supports lymph flow in the body—and emerging research suggests it may indirectly benefit the brain’s glymphatic system as well. By enhancing circulation and reducing inflammation, MLD helps create the optimal conditions for glymphatic clearance, especially when combined with quality sleep and hydration.

A new study published in Nature has demonstrated that precisely stimulating the lymphatics under skin on the neck and face can significantly enhance the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)—the liquid that cushions the brain and helps remove toxic waste—through lymphatic vessels. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-025-09052-5

🌍 World Lipoedema Day | June 11th 💜

Today we shine a light on Lipoedema—a condition that affects millions of women worldwide but is still widely misunderstood and often misdiagnosed.

What is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic fat disorder that causes an abnormal buildup of fat—typically in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes the arms.

Key Symptoms:
Symmetrical swelling in the legs and/or arms, sparing the hands and feet
Pain, heaviness, or tenderness in the affected limbs
Easy bruising and sensitivity
A disproportionate lower body compared to the upper body
Reduced mobility and fatigue as the condition progresses
What Causes It?
The exact cause is unknown, but hormonal and genetic factors are believed to play a major role. It often begins or worsens during hormonal shifts such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Many women report a family history, suggesting a genetic link.

Why Awareness Matters:
Lipoedema is often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphoedema, leading to years of frustration and ineffective treatments. Early recognition and proper diagnosis are key to managing symptoms, slowing progression, and improving quality of life.

🟣 You are not alone.
🟣 Your pain is real.
🟣 Awareness is the first step to change.

Let’s amplify the voices of those living with lipoedema. 💜
Together, we can break the stigma and bring visibility to this often-invisible condition.

Yesterday afternoon I was thrilled to reunite with Sara Harding, Clinical Lead for Lymphoedema services at The Royal Marsden Hospital. Sara and I did our MLD training together back in the early 2000’s. We collaborated to run a workshop on cancer treatment related lymphoedema and scars for clients attending the South East Cancer Help Centre in Purley. Clients shared their cancer experience and the lymphoedema/scar related issues they were dealing with. We were able to give self management guidance and signpost to other helpful services. The workshop seemed to be well received and we hope to go back in the Autumn. Thank you for our tulips

Final day attending the wound care today conference in Telford. What an inspirational event. Hearing how some teams in the NHS are going beyond and rising to the huge challenges they are facing but still continuing to deliver high quality and patient focussed services. The cherry on the top was hearing Emma deliver her presentation. She encouraged the most questions from the audience by far and a lot of interest from nurses on how they can help their patients get started with scar care as soon as safe to do so. It was also wonderful to connect with who so generously shared samples of Soothe Salve a product she has developed to heal scars. My colleagues and I at Restore are looking forward to trying this completely plant based gentle product. We also caught up with and Sian who are experienced scar practitioners in the South West. We all agreed what a worthwhile event to attend.
