Mount Toubkal, here we come!

Next weekend, myself and 18 of my Dorking friends (callling ourselves Mothers with Altitude) will be off to conquer Mount Toubkal in Morocco 🥾🏔️!

Mt Toubkal is North Africa’s highest peak at 4167m so whilst we’ll start off our trek in high temperatures (forecast is 34C), over the course of our ascent it it forecasted to drop sub-zero with up to -10C overnight (we’ll be sleeping in tents on the mountain both nights).

It’ll be a 3-day hike and the challenge will see us climbing and scrambling over huge boulders and rocks. Not something I’ve ever done before and definitely a challenge!.

I’m ready though.. with help from the fabulous team on the Reformer, my rowing machine and weekly training hikes through our glorious Surrey Hills with both my support team (Betsy the Cavapoo & my super hubby Ro) and the other ´Mothers with Altitude’; I’ve been building both my stamina & strength on a daily basis.

By taking on this challenge we hope to raise money for 2 fabulous charities which are close to our hearts: Bowelbabe (bowel cancer) and Papyrus, a youth mental health charity. Our dear friend will hopefully soon hit the incredible ´5 years all clear’ milestone so we all know from her experience how important continued funding remains in the fight against this horrible disease.
All of us also have (near) teenage children and sadly mental health issues are at an all time high amongst this group. Papyrus does an incredible job helping to prevent su***de amongst them.

I am a passionate believer in this concept..
anything that you restrict yourself to will grow stronger in your mind; I'm sure we've all had that experience when we tried to 'give up chocolate' or 'give up alcohol'.. you cannot help but think about the one thing that you tell yourself not to have, only to find yourself caving in at the end and then... beat yourself up over it afterwards.

Add in; don't take away.
Reframe; don't restrict.

It is blood orange time 🍊! No..blood oranges aren't oranges with blood as my son used to think🤣 but a variety of orange with crimson, almost -blood- coloured flesh. The flavour of the blood orange is stronger and the aroma is more intense than the oranges we are used to eating.

Their season is much shorter than regular oranges, so grab them when you can! We get ours from the fabulous organic veg & fruit growers and deliverers .

In our house, we all adore them so I was keen to find some different ways to eat them. This recipe is a new one I created and became an immediate favourite. It's inspired by our daughter's absolute obsession with Terry's Chocolate Orange (which her annoying mummy doesn't buy her ALL THE TIME as requested 🤣).

How truly healthy is the food that you eat? What's the benefit of organic food? I get asked the latter question a lot and people who know me know how passionate I am about the answer!

One obvious reason why I believe organic is best is because of the lack of pesticides. These substances can cause real havoc in our systems and are hard to get rid of once they reside within you.

Now I also know that organic food is often a little more expensive and when people haven't got the means or the desire to buy the majority of their food organic, I always refer to the 'Dirty Dozen' list as outlined here. This shows us the UK produce that is most likely to contain the highest levels of pesticide residues (not only on the outside of the fruit or veg but inside of it too! 😱 ) and I'd therefore recommend to buy these products organically where possible.

This list gets updated annually and therefore varies a bit from year-to-year, but generally you're safe to assume that soft fruits are part of this list 🍓🫐. I therefore refer to using organic frozen berries frequently, like in my Berry Smoothie recipe that I posted on Monday. Bags of these are a good and often reasonably economic option 👍.

So have a look at this latest UK Dirty Dozen list and try to memorise it to ensure your healthy food is indeed as healthy as it can be 😊.

Berries are an absolute favourite of mine as they are super tasty, very high in antioxidants and vitamins yet low in sugar and this smoothie recipe therefore makes a regular appearance in our kitchen.

I always keep organic frozen berries in my freezer. Be sure that they are organic as any form of berry is generally part of what is called 'the dirty dozen' list; foods most likely to carry heavy pesticide residue, turning them from super healthy stars into mini chemical bombs.. NOT what you're after I'm sure🫐 🍓.

Thankyou so much for joining Anishs and I tonight.

It was great to talk all things health coaching and where it fits in as a discipline within the NHS.

We talked about my own experience and why I retrained as a health coach, and discussed the 6 pillars that contribute to our health and well being.

What’s interesting is that many of us know what to do, it’s often the “doing it” or the ‘how to’ that’s the tough bit. But it was great to share some tips or tricks, just small changes, that can make a huge difference.

Excitingly, Anisha now agreed to undergo some health coaching herself too! And she’ll report back!!

What on earth is a health coach?? And why would I need one 🤷‍♀️?

Well..good questions.. Whilst health coaching is massive in the US and Europe, it is still relatively unknown in the UK so it is time we start answering these questions 😀.

A health coach provides space for you to discover what health means to you.. What is best for you to focus on right now? What are your goals? What are the right actions for you to put in place that make the biggest difference? Which ones stick i.e. you will keep doing those things long after you've finished working with your health coach as it has become part of how you live your life?

A health coach provides a unique combination of holistic and broad wellbeing knowledge (so not only nutrition!) and knowledge about how to change your behaviour sustainably.

A health coach never judges or tells you what to do; everyone is different after all and it's about helping you finding your unique way to your healthiest self by providing you with information and options of tools and techniques and importantly, space and time to reflect , trial and adjust.
