For the Men and Boys 💙I hope I’m not offending anyone by referring to my great-grandfather as a drunk. I’ve worked in prisons and psychiatric hospitals, and I know that addiction can be an incredibly difficult cycle to break. If you are caught in it, I pray that grace finds you and that you receive the support you need.
A new baby boy has been born into our family, and I thank God that he has a wonderful father.
It wasn’t always this way with the men in our family…My grandfather had to work from a very young age to support his family, because his own father struggled with addiction. It was tough. It was wartime. Men hold so much…
I believe most men—and little boys—carry a hero within them: a warrior, a lover, a poet.
At a time when the rate of su***de among men is so high, and as we continue to confront the ways men have been harmed and have caused harm, my wish is this: that whatever happened within my father, the grace that touched his life continues to ripple through ours and yours. It blessed our family with a love we still feel, even 26 years after he’s gone.
He was a man we all deeply loved—a man who could cry, who could make us laugh until our sides ached, who was as comfortable sitting with a homeless person on a park bench as he was standing beside the mayor.
I see his love living on in my brother, in his grandsons, and now in his great-grandsons. Welcome Albie…
I long for a world where all boys are raised with this kind of fathering—where they are shown what it truly means to be a good man.
