Appreciation post....

Along with lessons learnt!

Martin came to me 2 years ago for sports massage to help with various issues of pain or discomfort ranging from

Hips
Lower back
Upper back
Neck and shoulders

Martin is a window cleaner in his 70s and although reasonably active was suffering day to day.

Despite my inital attempts at getting Martin to do some strength work to help increase is capacity and ability to deal with his day to day and workload he was at first a little sceptical and stubborn of the unknown 😉

Fast forward only a couple of months and after some basic strength work Martin is in a position of not needing our services and has greatly improved his quality of life.

If you are struggling with your day to day and not currently engaging in regular strength work you NEED to!

It will hugely improve your quality of life and longevity.

Well done Martin!

There's a fire! 🔥

I use this analogy alot to describe how pain can work!

Think of an injury as the fire, and think of the pain or sensitivity as the fire alarm.

After you put out the fire if you dont turn the alarm off it will ring forever!

Injuries can be the same, long after the physicality of an injury has healed you can remain in pain if you dont start to reload those tissues and improve their tolerance and or capacity again.

Avoidance although very normal when we're trying to protect can also heighten sensitivity!

Equally pain is often present without any actual tissue damage!

Why are you still stretching?!

If you want to get better at stretching, stretch more!

But when it comes to injuries it probably isn't going to help resolve your injury or protect you much from getting one!

Many still assume if they get injured its because they haven't stretched enough! This is rarely the case if at all!

Think about it logically, usually void of a specific mechanism or trauma alot of injuries are an accumulative result of over loaded tissues.

How do we improve strength and conditioning? Through progressive overload! By challenging your current capacity and forcing adaptation!

The stronger and fitter your body is the more it can handle!

You won't challenge capacity with stretching!

Anti stretch gang!

Anterior Pelvic Tilt!

Another term that is thrown around far too much and is used to often blame lower back pain or tight hamstrings!

Did you know though
85% of women and 75% of men have an Anterior Pelvic Tilt completely symptom free!?

What does this mean?
It means it's a very normal occurrence and is simply just a normal physiological position of the pelvis.

It is very unlikely this is the cause of any issues you may have! Its not something we need to fear or try to "fix"

Its also unlikely you can even change it!

Instead focus on building capacity and tolerance via strength and conditioning overall as often many dont lack the ability to cope with the demands of their day to day.

Bird is not the word!

If you've ever suffered from back pain then you are probably familiar with the bird dog exercise.

Chances are if you continue to suffer or have episodes of back pain its not challenging enough!

It can be a great place to start when dealing with some acute pain or discomfort but if you are still using the basic version weeks or months down the line you are massively under loading your body!

Its not not the magic exercise you are lead to believe! Can it help? sure! But usually because its a low load exercise and allows for some recovery and load management!

Get stronger and make sure you progress exercises!

Stop blaming poor form!!

Poor form or technique still gets blamed alot for injuries but the reality is, it probably wasnt that!

We know the body is highly adaptable, with the right exposure, programming and progressive overload your body can handle all kinds of postions and loads!

Equally it may not be the most effective or efficient way of training something depending on your overall goal!

Would i recommend not worrying about those things for someone who Olympic lifts? absolutely not because inefficiency will make things way harder than they should and could be the difference between completing a lift and not!

Reasons more likely for injury over poor form

🌟 Poor sleep
🌟 Highly stress levels
🌟 Nutrition
🌟 Poor programming
🌟 Alcohol

Never neglect the basics of recovery!

Thats Magic!

Be very wary when looking at quick fixes and Magic exercises!

Sure sometimes they may help but more often than not its probably a little more involved than that.

Normally the answer is staring you in the face and with some modifications and adjustments can be solved.

If it was that simple we would see way less people dealing with pain and injury.

Demand Vs Capacity!

The way I see it everyone is dealing with the demand of life, mentally and physically of varying percentages.

If you are struggling with pain, injury and or fatigue its very possible you lack the capacity to deal with those things within your life!

The stronger, fitter and more conditioned we are the more resilient our bodies become and thus can deal with a greater physical demand.

This of course also all circles back to good programming and recovery strategies along side. #

Drop the Ego!!

Guys if you're dealing with injury or pain you need to stop trying to push on through or avoiding the issue!

Yes you're training will look different, you are no longer training for PBs or performance!

By all means continue to train hard with the things you can and focus that energy somewhere else.

No one likes to feel like they're moving backwards but sometimes it is the only way to move forwards again!
