It’s never too late to start again

15 years ago I decided to train as a counsellor.
I didn’t know where it was going to lead me or what would be at the end of it for me.

I became completely hooked and despite working a full time job, driving around the whole of the south of England during the day.
I put in numerous hours of work over a 5 year period at night school.

I also had to find time for my own personal therapy, 100 hours of trainee client work, monthly supervision sessions, as well as the essays, presentations, case presentations and exams.

In the last year of training I knew what I wanted to do, I wanted to set up my own Private Counselling Practice and be available to offer counselling that would change peoples lives.

And thats what I have been doing for the last 10 years.

Just me, on my own, from my own therapy room, helping around 20 people a week to change their lives.

It’s the best decision I ever made.

I’ve gone on to do further training as well and am now a counselling supervisor too, and love the supervision work I now do with trainee counsellors, and other counsellors in private practice, helping them to realise their dreams too.

And gained my Mindfulness Teacher qualification to help others discover the benefits of a mindful life.

I was 50 when I started SeeClear Counselling
It’s never too late to start again and make dreams come true.

Do not underestimate the benefits of slowing down when feeling stressed

Slowing down lowers your heart rate and reduces adrenaline, directly countering the physical effects of stress.

Make conscious efforts to slow down your everyday activities

This is mindfulness in action

Choose an everyday activity and do it mindfully.

Drink your tea slowly.
Notice the warmth of the cup.
Taste each sip.
Put your phone down.
Be fully present for just 2 minutes.

Mindfulness does not need hours of meditation.

You can start with a very simple task like drinking your tea leading to lowering your stress

When the NHS recommends Mindfulness

When a hospital recommends mindfulness as part of someone’s care plan, something important is happening.

A new client reached out this week after being advised, by a local hospital, to explore mindfulness to help manage their medical condition

For years, people have turned to mindfulness because they were overwhelmed, exhausted, or searching for a way to cope.

Now, our health service is recognising what so many have already experienced:

Mindfulness helps.

For me, this marks an important shift.

Mindfulness isn’t an “alternative” anymore.
It isn’t a trend.
It’s a research supported, clinically recognised way of helping people live with illness, pain, and ongoing symptoms.

It supports pain management.
It reduces stress.
It strengthens resilience.
It gives people back a sense of agency in their own healing.

If you’re living with illness, pain, or stress, mindfulness can give you tools that genuinely make a difference, because research shows it helps people manage long term conditions.

If you’re curious how mindfulness can support your condition, message me.

Did you know when you are stressed you breathe differently?

Stress breathing is often shallow, quick and from your chest.

This type of breathing alerts your fear centre that something is wrong and triggers off your fight or flight response.

A simple change to your breathing can reduce stress.

A calm breath tends to be slower, fuller, and lower in the body. The belly expands on the inhale, the exhale is longer than the inhale, and the whole rhythm is slower

Take a moment today to notice how you are breathing
If you notice it is fast, chest rising and falling, shoulders rising and falling, and it doesn’t feel easy or calm,

Stop and take a moment to just slow your breathe down, breathe a little deeper and make your out breathe longer than your in breathe

That simple change is a simple stress reliever, your body will notice the change and your mind will follow if you continue to notice it and change it.

Take just 3 or 4 slow, deep breaths at regular intervals during the day and you will start to notice a difference

Don’t get me wrong, local community groups can be helpful

But there is that dark, negative, overwhelming and very stressful side to them too.

They can become a running commentary of complaints, arguments and outrage.

If you notice you feel worse after scrolling, it might be worth asking yourself whether the group is keeping you informed… or just keeping you stressed.

Whats recent community groups conversations have caused you stress recently?

What is the word most people avoid when feeling stressed?

From my experience with clients it seems to be the word HELP.

People think
‘I can cope on my own’

‘I don’t want to burden others with my problems’

’I’m too embarrassed to ask for help’

That little word HELP can make a BIG difference to how you cope with stressful times.

💚 Sharing the load can relieve stress

💚 Getting help in other areas of your life can relieve stress

💚 Others may have an alternative perspective for you

💚 Others may be able to give you respite

💚 Talking about your problems can reduce how stressful they feel

💚 Any kind of support can be helpful

Next time you are feeling stressed reach out and ask for HELP

Doing it all alone can increase your stress

Stress relief is about regular daily habits that regulate your nervous system

Not an unregulated reaction when stress happens

Do you know when you are starting to get stressed?

Do you take notice of the signs or ignore them?

Often we ignore things like

😫 Sleepless nights
😫 Comfort eating
😫 Going off our food
😫 Drinking too much alcohol
😫 Neglecting ourselves
😫 Drinking too much caffeine
😫 Feeling restless
😫 Brain fog
😫 Forgetting things
😫 Overthinking
😫 Headaches
😫 Tummy aches
😫 Irritability
😫 Low libido
😫 Fatigue

These could all be signs of stress.

The earlier you can notice them and listen to them the more likely you are able to manage and reduce your stress levels.

Leave it too long and these symptoms get worse and you experience more of them, making it more difficult to cope with everyday life, getting into a vicious cycle of increasing stress and increasing symptoms.

Notice your signs, don’t ignore them, start managing your stress sooner rather than later.

Are you currently stressed and ignoring the signs?
