Mannin Doctors - Private GPs

Mannin Doctors - Private GPs The Island's first Private GP centre. Give yourself the time you need. No need to leave your NHS GP.
(1)

We are two of the Island's GPs who feel that currently the NHS services do not give patients enough time to have a meaningful discussion. We know this is not the fault of the local GPs, but we decided to offer an alternative way of consulting a doctor. This means You can decide how much time you want to spend with us and what topics you would like to discuss. We don't have any government targets to meet so we can fully focus on what matters to you. We are currently going to work at Manx Medical Imaging at Village Walk, Onchan, before moving to out own premises.

Heart Month. Forget perfection. Pick one habit you can repeat.

Most people fail because they try to fix everything at once.
Your heart does not need a dramatic overhaul. It needs consistency.

Choose one:
• walk after dinner 4 nights a week
• take your blood pressure twice a week and log it
• reduce salt for 7 days and notice the difference
• add two strength sessions this week
• book the appointment you have been avoiding

One habit. Repeated. That is how health actually changes.

If you want to feel better this week, start here.

❤Heart health is not just about big emergencies. It is built in small choices.

Pick three for the next seven days:
• walk 20 minutes a day
• reduce alcohol
• add one extra portion of veg daily
• swap one salty snack for something simple
• go to bed 30 minutes earlier
• check your blood pressure if you can
• drink more water
• stop smoking and ask for help if you need it.

You do not need perfection. You need repetition.

And if you have chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, or swelling in the legs, do not self manage. Get checked.

Weight loss injections are not a trend.
They are medical treatment.

They can be life changing for the right person.
They can also cause harm when used without proper assessment, monitoring, and support.

They should never be:
• bought from a stranger online
• taken without a full medical history
• used without advice on side effects and warning signs
• treated like a quick fix without nutrition and lifestyle support
If you are considering them, do it properly.

Safe prescribing is not about judgement. It is about protecting your health.
We would welcome a chat with you.

Home tests can be useful.
They can also mislead.

They help when:
• you already know what you are checking and why
• you have guidance on timing and interpretation
• you are tracking a trend over time, not a single result

They mislead when:
• you rely on one reading and panic
• you test the wrong thing at the wrong time
• the sample is poor quality or the test is not reliable
• you treat yourself based on results without clinical context

A result is only one piece of the picture. Symptoms, history, exam, and proper lab testing matter.
If you are unsure, bring the result to me and my team and let’s interpret it properly.

Safer Internet Day. A warning from a GP.
Health scams are getting slick. They use fear, urgency, and “limited stock” tactics because it works.

If you see:
miracle weight loss claims
hormone “balances” with no proper assessment
antibiotics offered without a consultation
injections promoted like skincare
supplements claiming to “detox” or “cure” everything

✋please pause.

🚩Red flags:
no registered clinician involved
no medical history taken
no discussion of risks and side effects
pressure to buy today
testimonials instead of evidence

Your health is not a shopping basket.
If you are considering a treatment, do it properly, safely, and with real oversight.

👍AI can be helpful for questions.

👎It can be risky for decisions.

It can explain terms, help you prepare for an appointment, and prompt good questions.

But it cannot examine you, check your blood pressure, listen to your chest, or know your full history. And it cannot tell when a symptom is a red flag.

✅Use AI safely:
to understand a diagnosis you have already been given
to make a list of questions for your clinician
to track symptoms and patterns

❎Do not use it to:
diagnose chest pain, breathlessness, neurological symptoms
decide you do not need to be seen
buy treatments online because it suggested one.

If you are unsure, get proper medical guidance. Tech is a tool. It is not your GP.

Looking after ageing parents, the quiet signs things are slipping

Looking after ageing parents can be subtle.
It’s rarely one big moment. It’s a series of small changes.

Quiet signs things may be slipping:
missed appointments or confusion with dates
medication mistakes, repeats not ordered, doses doubled
unexplained bruises, falls, shuffles, fear of stairs
unopened post, unpaid bills, unusual spending
fridge empty, weight loss, eating less
personal hygiene changes, clothes not changed
becoming withdrawn, anxious, low, snappy
getting lost, struggling with familiar routes

If you are noticing patterns, trust yourself.
A gentle conversation now, is kinder than a crisis later.

And if you are the one doing the caring, you matter too. Burnout helps nobody.

New at Mannin Doctors: Dxcover brain cancer blood test

A new headache can be worrying, especially if it feels different to your usual one, or it is getting worse. Most headaches are not caused by a brain tumour, but, when you are anxious, you want clear answers quickly.

I am really pleased to share that we can now offer Dxcover, a liquid biopsy blood test that helps us assess the likelihood of a malignant brain tumour. It is a straightforward blood sample, and, for many patients, results can be turned around quickly, often within 24 hours, and, in most cases, within 48 hours.

What this means for you:

If you have a new headache, a worsening headache, or you simply feel that your body is not playing ball, this test can help us rule out a malignant brain tumour quickly, and, importantly, help guide what we do next.

If the result is reassuring, we can have a sensible discussion about whether you still need a scan, or whether we should look at other likely causes first.

If the result raises concern, we can move quickly, and discuss urgent next steps, including imaging.

A key point to be clear about, this test is designed to help with malignant tumours, and, it is not a reliable test for benign tumours, so, depending on your symptoms, a scan may still be the right plan.

If you would like to discuss whether Dxcover is appropriate for you, please book a consultation with us, and, we will talk through your symptoms, take your blood sample, and agree a clear plan.

If you have a sudden, severe headache, weakness, speech changes, seizures, confusion, or a stiff neck with fever, please seek urgent medical help immediately.

Stress can look like illness and illness can look like stress, stop guessing.

That’s why guessing is risky.

Stress can cause:
chest tightness, palpitations, breathlessness
stomach problems, appetite changes
headaches, dizziness, poor sleep
fatigue, irritability, brain fog
But those symptoms can also be medical.

So here is my rule:
If it is new, persistent, worsening, or stopping you functioning, do not label it as stress and hope.

Start with two steps:
check the basics: sleep, food, hydration, movement
get checked if it is not settling or you are worried

You do not have to choose between “it’s stress” and “it’s serious”.
You just need a proper assessment.
