Today one of our groups enjoyed a brilliant trip to the John Bull Factory Tour for a real behind-the-scenes look at how traditional seaside sweets are made. 🍬

We learned about the history of rock making and watched skilled staff carefully stretch, shape and roll the colourful mixtures into the classic sticks you see at the seaside. Everyone had the opportunity to get hands-on and roll their own piece of rock, complete with the letters of their names running all the way through – which was a real highlight!

Along the way, we sampled a variety of sweets and biscuits, and watched chocolates and fudge being freshly made. The sights, smells and colours made it a really sensory experience, and it was lovely to see everyone so engaged and curious, asking questions and enjoying each part of the process.

We finished our visit with a relaxed walk around the gift shop, choosing a few treats to take home 🍫🍭🍪

🏖️ You asked, & we delivered 🌊

We’re so pleased to share that we’ll be returning to the beach hut this summer!

Time at the coast offers so many benefits - the calming sound of the waves, fresh sea air to lift mood and energy, and the chance for gentle exercise, social time, and sensory experiences. It’s the perfect setting for relaxation, connection, and wellbeing.

This is something the people we support have been asking for, and we’re delighted to make it happen. 😎

We can’t wait to make more happy memories together by the sea. ☀️

❤️ Valentine’s baking at Acorn ❤️

This week our groups have enjoyed spending time in the kitchen making a selection of Valentine’s themed treats, including orange cupcakes, lemon shortbread dipped in chocolate, and raspberry cheesecakes.

Baking activities support skill development, confidence, teamwork, and creativity, while also giving everyone a sense of achievement. Individuals were pleased to be able to share what they had made with their families to enjoy at home.

A lovely week of purposeful activity and seasonal fun at Acorn.

Here are a few photos 📸

🌿 The Quiet Benefits of Watching Animals 🌿

Sometimes, it’s not about doing - it’s simply about being.

Spending time quietly watching animals go about their day can have a surprisingly calming effect. Seeing them graze, explore, rest and interact with each other can help slow the pace, ease busy minds and create a sense of peace in the moment.

For many people, this gentle connection with nature can:
• Encourage relaxation and reduce feelings of stress
• Support focus and mindfulness
• Create a sense of comfort and routine
• Help people feel grounded and present outdoors

Our newest additions, Kenny (a Mediterranean miniature donkey) and Clive (a small donkey), arrived this week as a bonded pair and are gently settling into their new surroundings alongside the rest of our animals.

A lovely outing for one of our groups at Acorn today with a visit to Beverley Guildhall 🏛️

We enjoyed exploring the historic building, learning a little about the town’s past, and spending time together in the community. The day also included a spot of travel training, helping to build confidence and independence while out and about.

A calm, positive day filled with conversation, learning, and shared experiences.

Small groups, real connections 🙌🏻

At Acorn, we believe that keeping groups small creates the best environment for people to feel comfortable, valued, and able to be themselves. It allows time for conversations, shared experiences, and friendships to grow naturally.

Moments like these – chatting over a drink, sharing ideas, and planning together – help build confidence, trust, and a genuine sense of belonging. Today, this group spent time talking about upcoming activities, with everyone having the chance to suggest what they’d like to do in the coming weeks. We believe the best plans come from the people who take part, giving them choice, control, and ownership over their time.

Our small group approach means everyone has a voice, everyone is included, and meaningful friendships can develop at a pace that feels right for each person.

This is where community is built — through kindness, connection, and shared decisions.

🌿 What We Offer at Acorn 🌿

At our Driffield site, we have a central base with easy access to the town and public transport, making it a great starting point for the day and for getting out into the local community.

Inside, we offer a warm and welcoming space designed to meet a range of needs. This includes a main room with a large boardroom-style table where everyone can come together for activities, chats and shared meals, as well as a pool table which is always popular. We also have a purpose-built food preparation and craft area where people can take part in cooking, baking and creative projects.

Alongside this, we have quieter spaces available, including a relaxation room and a sensory room, offering calm environments for those who need time to unwind, regulate or take a break from the busier parts of the day.

Just 10 minutes away, we also have access to our outdoor base where many of our outdoor activities take place. This gives people the opportunity to enjoy gardening, nature-based projects and time in a green environment, while still being close to our main Driffield setting.

As well as our day-to-day activities, we regularly plan themed activity days and trips out into the community. These include outings such as bowling, visits to Gravity, and trips further afield to places like Eden Camp, The Deep and Flamingo Land. We also enjoy cafés, local events and seasonal celebrations, with gentle physical activities encouraged to support health and wellbeing.

Together, these experiences provide a balanced mix of indoor comfort, community access, social opportunities and outdoor experiences — supporting confidence, independence and overall wellbeing in a relaxed, person-centred way.

We currently have limited availability for new placements. If you’d like to find out more about what we offer, we’d be happy to have an informal chat. 🌱

Today at Acorn, we planted our January growing box, which included strawberries, chives, and potatoes.

Each group enjoyed watching the demonstration video beforehand and then independently gathered their equipment with minimal guidance. This approach supported independence, confidence, and practical life skills, with everyone taking pride in being hands-on and involved throughout the activity.

A lovely, calm session focused on learning, teamwork, and growing things together 🍓 🥔
