The last few weeks have been lovely, haven’t they?
Sunny days, paddling pools, trips to the beach, walks by rivers, lochs and reservoirs. All the things we associate with summer finally arriving in Scotland.
But alongside the sunshine, there have also been some really heartbreaking stories in the news about children and young people getting into difficulty in water.
And it’s hard to know how to talk about that without sounding frightening, because this isn’t about making parents panic.
It’s not about suggesting that baby and toddler swimming lessons make children “safe” around water. No lesson can ever replace close adult supervision. But it is about giving children the best possible start.
When little ones come to Turtle Tots, they’re not just splashing about. They’re learning to feel comfortable in the water. They’re learning how to listen, how to hold on, how to move safely, how to return to the side, how to respect the water and understand it.
They’re building confidence slowly, gently and in a way that feels fun, and those early experiences matter.
Because water is part of childhood. It’s holidays, swimming pools, garden paddling pools, lochs, beaches, rivers and family days out.
The more familiar children are with water from a young age, the more we can help them grow up with confidence, awareness and respect for it.
Just steady little skills that build over time.
Our Turtle Tots lessons are suitable from 12 weeks to 4 years, across our West Glasgow venues, and every class is designed to help babies, toddlers and preschoolers feel happy, confident and supported in the water. It’s never just “a swimming lesson”, it’s a life skill, started early.
