We are investing the best technology in practice to look after your children eye sight.

Myopia is a word we use in optometry to describe short sightedness. A condition which causes the patient to struggle with seeing objects in the distance. Myopia will usually start to affect the patient between the ages of thirteen and twenty. It occurs because the eye continues to grow when it shouldn’t. Signals from the brain encourage growth due to the internal optics of the eye. Due to the increasing numbers of myopia in the UK and World populations, strategies to control have started to become a priority for optometrists.
Unfortunately extreme prescriptions in myopia can lead to serious eye complications later in life, therefore trying to reduce that progression is the fundamental aim of myopia management. The tools which we have to try and control the progression of myopia have been bolstered recently, with a new spectacle lens. It can achieve a 67% reduction in progression of the prescription. Fitting can prove to be simpler than with contact lenses and may allow for more children to be eligible. Ask for more details in practice.

Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is an eye condition which is caused by pressure causing damage to the optic nerve. This nerve is located at the back of the eye and is responsible for taking all the information from the eye to the brain.
While anyone can develop Glaucoma, the people most at risk are;
1. Aged over 40
2. Very short sighted
3. Of African or Caribbean origin
4. Closely related to someone with Glaucoma
With Glaucoma the damage is permanent and painless. Progression is slow and usually in one eye, allowing the other eye to compensate. A variety of simple tests can detect the condition in its early stages,
1. Pressure test
2. Visual field checks
3. Optic nerve assessment and comparison
If any abnormalities are found the tests will usually be repeated and then onward referral to the hospital eye service for confirmation of diagnosis and treatment. Treatment is usually via eye drops.
The best way to try and prevent Glaucoma causing you any visual problems is to attend your optometrist for routine eye checks.

Routine sight tests are essential health checks for the prevention of poor health. In addition to identifying problems with eyesight they can also detect a range of other health conditions including high bloodpressure , raised cholesterol, heart disease, brain tumours and risk of stroke.

The NHS recommends most people have an eye test every two years, but children, older adults (60+) and individuals with diabetes or a family history of glaucoma may need more frequent checks.

If you haven't had a sight test in the last two years, book now at www.wilkieseyecare.co.uk
