Introducing Solway Disability Support CIC
Solway Disability Support community interest company runs a day centre based at Kindar House, at the Crichton on Bankend Road, Dumfries. We support people with learning disabilities to reach whatever potential they are capable of by offering personalised tailored support to help them achieve their own goals within a safe environment. We can support them to work towards short, medium and long-term goals, whether that be short-term transition or long-term realisation of a volunteering or employability aim and everything in between. The service is flexible according to those individual needs and goals. We aim to promote physical exercise, healthy eating and social interaction for mental health & wellbeing. We support whilst encouraging independence within their capacity to improve self-esteem & confidence. We can offer volunteer/student placements from out-with Solway Support, to reduce stigma and teach engagement with those with disabilities. We can offer support to parents and carers in sourcing information, completing those endless forms and meeting others in a similar situation. Too often our challenged adults are forgotten about in society and left to sit around doing nothing all day with little exercise, motivation or stimulation. We want to change the perception that, because they have a disability, they are not able to live a fulfilled life. Our adults have the right to choose what they would like out of life, how they would like to achieve that and with whose support. They need and deserve a variety of social interactions, like anyone else, to form long-term friendships with their peers and other like-minded individuals. We can offer individuals a range of tailored activities and experiences including;
Sports, exercise and outdoor activities for health & wellbeing
Menu planning, shopping and cooking for healthy eating
Route planning, timing and practice in bus travel for access
Transition support for moving on from school, college or home
We will work together with individuals, their families and carers to put together a wish-list of goals and outcomes, no matter how small or ambitious they might be, to work towards. It will regularly be revisited and reviewed to ensure we are making that difference. As we know that many individuals will not communicate to their families what they have been doing, we will provide daily feedback to families on what we have been up to and their achievements that day. Being based at Kindar House, we have amazing grounds to get out and about in and there is a bus stop right outside from where we can travel into to access shops for cooking ingredients, sporting venues such as DG1 and Palmerston Arena, as well as transport for travelling further afield.
