Sometimes girls learn to mask so well that their struggles are missed completely.
Masking can absolutely be seen in autistic girls (and boys) but it is also important to remember that masking alone does not automatically mean autism. Anxiety, sensory, overwhelm, trauma, social pressures, low self esteem and burnout can sometimes look similar too.
Every child’s experience is unique, which is why understanding the ‘why’ behind the behaviour is so important.
At Branching Minds ASD, we believe in looking at the whole child with compassion, curiosity and understanding making sure children and families feel heard, supported and understood 💙 https://branchingmindsasd.co.uk
