We're often asked why we don't offer traditional MHFA - mainly by our accountant, who would bloody love it if we did.
But here's just one reason:
My 14 and 11 year old sons today got ambushed into undertaking an official MHFA multiple choice exam when they arrived home from school (I'm such a fun dad).
No preparation, prior knowledge, phones or laptops.
And as they were clearly experiencing withdrawal symptoms from their Xbox they rattled it out in under ten minutes.
They scored 31 and 30 out of 40.
That would earn them both a pass and two bonny certificates as Mental Health First Aiders .
That's why.

Better:Gen Prepare to Care. Mental Health training for Medical Students: Reflections on Our Pilot Year with the University of Dundee Medical School.
As we approach the end of our first year, we’re proud to share the highlights and impact of this year’s Prepare to Care programme.
What makes this programme unique is that it always starts from a blank page. Our training is carefully crafted and evolves around the bespoke needs of the individuals taking part, because in mental health, one size rarely fits all.
Throughout the year, we’ve explored how positive mental health is shaped by a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociological factors. We’ve examined how our predisposing traits influence our responses to challenges, and learned that while some risks are static and must be accepted, others are modifiable, and can be addressed with the right tools.
We have:
Discovered both the value and the limits of “screaming into the void.”
Explored DBT’s concept of Radical Acceptance.
Created (from scratch) and practiced using a personalised BioPsychoSocial Toolkit to help face future challenges.
Attempted to learn to juggle as both a mindful task and to recognise that some of our future medics probably shouldn't be surgeons.
Learned and applied the CBT STOP technique to challenge automatic negative responses.
Created an amazing collection of affirming statements. (and damn right if you have “Juicy Glutes” you should be proud of them).
Identified the “non-negotiables” that help us succeed in this demanding profession.
Discussed the importance of physical and psychological safety in clinical environments, and how this is closely tied to increased confidence and competence—two heavy lifters in supporting mental wellbeing.
Understood the power of a peer support network of like-minded, brilliant individuals with a shared purpose.
Acknowledged the unique pressures facing medical students and taken steps to accept and, where possible, overcome them.
Recognised that it’s more than okay to feel proud of your accomplishments and to celebrate how amazing you truly are.
We’ve never claimed to make anyone a mental health expert in just a few sessions, nor do we try. Anybody that claims they can deserves, at best, a Paddington Hard Stare.
And for the students.
This is an ongoing journey, and we’re honoured to have been involved as you discover a path that works best for you. Thank you for your openness, your engagement, and your willingness to show up. You are amazing ambassadors for both the university and as future leaders in healthcare, and you deserve every success.
With love.
Andrew and Lynn.

Better:Gen aims to cement the idea that movement, nutrition and a sense of community has a profound impact on cognitive abilities and is recognised as a natural and highly effective contributor to mental health improvement and symptom management (side effects can include weight loss, increased motivation & more energy). Better:Gen offers a safe environment, supportive contact as well as the unbridled positivity and enthusiasm to help you on your improvement journey.
We work with older adults, adults living with adverse mental health conditions, adults living with learning difficulties and anybody who feels that mainstream fitness centres just aren’t for them.
We have four main focuses Better:Active, Better:Health, Better:Life and Better:Together.
Better:Active is a more flexible approach; designed for groups of individuals who would enjoy and benefit from increasing their activity levels but would not want to attend a gym for whatever reason.
Better:Health is our outreach program, where Better:Gen comes to you! This is the original Better:Gen program which focuses on building strength, endurance and promoting movement commonly used in activities of daily living. This is a 30 minute session for groups who cannot get to the centre.
Better:Life is designed as a health and wellness program suitable for all abilities. Groups of older adults both with or without mental health difficulties, including dementia, as well as groups of adults with learning disabilities will not only manage this program but greatly benefit from it. The program consists of three hours of health, wellness and movement and is delivered with an emphasis on inclusion, fun and independence. It includes the Better:Gen program which builds strength, endurance, and flexibility, promoting movements that are used (and sometimes lost) in everyday life.
Better:Together is our quarterly event. You may have noticed our tag line – a better life for generations. Better:Together is our quarterly social event. We welcome people of all ages from the very young to the young at heart to come together to experience Better:Gen at it’s best. A fun filled day of health, wellness and intergenerational activity. With food and drink to reflect the season and best of all, it’s free.
