Come along to a First Aid workshop specifically for Dads and Mums (please don’t bring babies or children). Facilitated by the good people of 'First Stop Safety Training'.

The workshop will take place at Community Central Hall, 292-316 Maryhill Road G20 7YE.

The two hour session will cover the fundamentals of First Aid, with a particular focus on First Aid for children and Babies. We will cover choking, CPR , burns and more.

One of my favourite topics to cover during first aid training is AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). Why? Because people are always surprised at how simple and safe they are to use, and surprised at how little planning their workplace has done if one was needed.

But here’s the truth: without a plan, an AED on the wall won’t save a life.

Why AEDs Matter

Sudden cardiac arrest is unpredictable, but your response shouldn’t be. Just look at the statistics:

Defibrillation within 3–5 minutes of collapse can increase survival rates by 50–70%.
Each minute of delay reduces the chance of survival by around 10%.
If a shock is delivered within the first minute, survival can be as high as 90%
Every second counts and a confident, clear plan can save a life.

Questions Every Workplace Should Be Able to Answer

Where is your nearest AED?
Use Defib Finder to locate nearby devices—but remember, not all AEDs are registered.

How do you access it?
Is the AED locked? Does it need a code? Or is it unlocked, like those found in many supermarkets?

Who would you send to retrieve it?
During a crisis, hesitation causes delays. Assign someone now, don’t wait until it’s urgent.

Here’s how to be prepared:

Include AED use in your regular first aid training

Run practice drills—familiarity builds speed and confidence

Ensure the AED is clearly signposted and accessible

Assign clear roles in an emergency: Who fetches the AED? Who starts CPR? Who calls for help?

The safety and wellbeing of the children in our care is of utmost importance to us at Drumfork Nursery & Forest School.

We provide 12-hour Paediatric First Aid training to all of our staff to ensure they are competent and confident to respond to any first aid required within Nursery & Forest School.

We'd like to thank Sean and Robyn Stop Safety Training for providing another excellent presentation of Paediatric First Aid Training in the Nursery on Sunday! A group of our staff were joined for this training by some of our parents, and everyone agreed it was a fantastic session where they gained so much new knowledge and developed lots of important new skills!
