When I go into schools, one analogy I tell the kids in my assemblies is the “Coke Can Effect”.

If you imagine the child is a can of coke. Every time something stressful happens, the can is shaken. Nothing much seems to change, but the can is shaken and shaken.

The pressure builds, and builds, and once home with their grown ups, in their safe space, the can opens. All that shaking results in a lot of mess and try as you might, once the fizzing starts, the can is next to impossible close until all the emotions are done coming out.

This is why it’s important to talk about your feelings. Open the can early, and pour that coke out slowly, it won’t build up and build up and explode everywhere.

Grown ups, be aware of your own emotions too, notice when it’s building up and open it slowly; our children learn by example, so we need to show how it’s done.

This is what Grief feels like.
Don’t judge it
Don’t rush it
Don’t dismiss it
Don’t suppress it
There is no Rulebook for Grief.
It comes in waves and it can at times feel like your drowning. What is grief, if not love persevering.
