A little reminder that your adrenal glands are one of the organs in your body with the highest concentrations of vitamin C, they need the vitamin C to help them to synthesise hormones

… you know how important those adrenals are for our hormone health from my previous posts.

Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin which is used up quickly in the body. More so if you are stressed.

Your body doesn’t hang on to vitamin C and needs to replenish this daily through fruit and veg.

Best options are oranges, red pepper, green pepper, blackcurrants, broccoli, strawberries, kiwi, papaya, kale and so many more

Pack your fruit and veg in, eat the rainbow. Your adrenals and your hormones will thank you.

If you are cooking the veg it’s best to steam as you hold onto the vitamin better

Good morning …. What are your intentions for the week ahead?

Do you have a busy week?

Have you scheduled time for self care?

Where do you come on your list of priorities?

Can you continue to juggle all the balls without scheduling time out for yourself ?

What are you going to do about it?

Lots of women ask me about weight and WHY they can’t lose it, it gets harder to lose around time of menopause …. they don’t feel they are doing anything differently, yet the weight piles on.

If you remember from earlier posts …. Stress increases your cortisol levels …. And when cortisol increases so does your insulin level.

You also release insulin when you eat

Your body releases insulin from the pancreas when you eat, depending on how much “ sugar” is in what your eating will decide on how much insulin you are releasing.

Now, if you are feeling stressed what’s the first thing you reach for …. Is it a punnet of blueberries? Some humus and carrot sticks, or a donut and a coffee?

choosing the coffee and donut - releases more cortisol and more insulin as the sugar and caffeine stress the adrenals.

Not only this Your body will continue to pump out insulin while you choose high sugar, high carbohydrate foods. ( remember your body produces insulin when you eat, and in higher levels when that food is loaded with sugar/glucose)

Your body under stress and flooded with insulin, starts to store it as fat! And will start to store fat faster.

Usually around your belly, hips n thighs.

There’s more bad news …. As your cortisol rockets and your insulin increases … that shift starts to run down your s*x hormones further. Which results in anxiety, insomnia, brain fog, hot flushes, hair loss, insulin resistance, weight gain, loss of libido, dry skin, mood swings etc etc

THE TAKE AWAY MESSAGE:
You need to balance your blood sugar/glucose levels to reduce the spike in insulin, by paying more attention to your diet and the choices you make around the time of perimenopause, if you haven’t started doing so already.
Choosing a diet with much less sugar, both obvious sugars and hidden sugars. Reduce the simple carbohydrates and saturated fats, ditch the processed foods … increase your vegetables and fruit, increase protein and fibre and good fats.

And as always manage your stress levels …

As I’ve said before menopause commands a lifestyle change for many people. After years of focussing on others, your family, your career, it’s time to focus on you, so that you can be in optimum health for the next phase of your life.

Diet is included in my mastering menopause package. It’s one of the 5 pillars we work with

The 5 pillars include:
Nutrition and hydration
Excercise
Sleep
Stress

Listen to your body, it's always communicating with you.

If you listen to and take notice of your symptoms, so you can address them your body won't only thank you now, but will thank you in the years to come.

It's super tempting to pop a pill, suppress the symptoms, but that's not getting to the root cause.

That's driving the illness deeper.

Your body has an incredible self healing ability. It wants to work with you, not against you.

Don't ever lose faith in yourself or your miraculous body. If you aren't getting the answers you are looking for, look further, delve deeper .... Your body and your future self will thank vou ...

Harness the energy around you, learn to feel it, touch it, hold it, play with it. Draw it close to you and send it out far into the universe ….

We can all use energy to guide us. Notice how certain people or places make you feel when you are around them, learn to listen to those feelings and act on them….

You already know how to use energy, you just need to pay attention, use it more often and listen to your own intuition …. ❤️

18/04/2023

As you will be aware already from previous posts, perimenopause is a time where our ovaries start to slow down and go into decline, the amount of oestrogen produced is decreased.

The first symptoms may be brain fog, poor memory, increased anxiety, low mood, and mood swings

Often women may feel they are suffering from depression when it is in fact perimenopause causing their symptoms.

Even women with no history of depression are three times more likely to experience depression during menopause transition compared to pre- menopause

Oestrogen is a growth promoting hormone and stimulates growth and development of nerve cells, particularly in the brain. This drop in oestrogen is known to reduce nerve function in the brain, having a significant impact on mood, memory, concentration and learning.

As mentioned below in my last post with our “ teams” ( have a read)
Team HPA and Team HPO , there is a link between increased severity of menopausal symptoms and women who experience high levels of stress.

We know cortisol and Adrenalin are produced by the adrenal glands, and are pumped out in greater quantities when we are under increased stress. The adrenals also pick up some of the slack from the retiring ovaries, and are designed to produce just enough oestrogen to get you by

….. unless

You are under constant or high amounts of stress! Because the adrenal glands will always choose to produce stress hormones over oestrogen ( survival comes before fertility).

When menopausal women are in constant or high states of stress the adrenals become worn out and oestrogen production halts altogether as the adrenals can no longer meet demand.

Anxiety may often kick in before feelings of depression … putting further strain on the adrenals

Stress is also often a key factor behind hot flushes, and night sweats due to the surges in adrenalin, which can cause increased heart rates and vasodilation of blood vessels.

So we really want to look after our adrenal glands by ensuring we remain as stress free as possible

How do we do that?

We ensure we practice self care, through regular experiences which help us to destress.

Whether that is booking in for regular therapies, getting out in nature, being active and moving our bodies ( not too much though as too much excercise can be as stressful as too little), making the right food and drink choices and ensuring our bodies are well hydrated with fresh clean water.

Meeting up with friends, having a good old belly laugh, staying away from people and situations that cause us to feel uncomfortable and create stress, and dealing with any situation which needs dealt with right away instead of allowing it to fester.

Ask for help if we need it. Say “no” if we need to. Allow things to go, don’t hold onto grudges

That all seems very simple doesn’t it? but in reality it’s not always that easy, because with every choice we make there are usually a set of circumstances, which can often be complicated.

Do what you can, make choices to prioritise your long term health.

Prioritise you!

Start with one thing and make it a regular habit, before adding another, and another.

Each small step you make over a sustained period adds up and will lead to improved adrenal health, which will lead to an improvement in symptoms.

As soon as peri menopause hits our s*x hormones start to decline. As much as we may think of this scenario like that of a bucket draining, drop by drop, as the hormone level slowly reduces ….

It’s absolutely nothing like that …. Our hormones are wild, and ready to take you on the wildest rollercoaster ride of your life.

Some days those hormones will be plentiful, other days non existant, rarely will they be balanced. You will go from having confidence and energy one day, to feeling like you have been hit by a bus the next day …. Your emotions can really be all over the place.

And get this, you can’t just blame your poor wee shrinking ovaries!

Nope! There’s a whole team at play here! And it’s this team, the endocrine team I work on as a reflexologist …

Because the endocrine glands produce your hormones

The hypothalamus and pituitary gland giving directions to the other glands in the team.

There are in fact two seperate teams, there is the HPA team ( the adrenal team) made up of the governing hypothalamus and pituitary along with the adrenals …..

What does the HPA team do? Well, they produce cortisol. Ensuring you have both energy and mental clarity when you are stressed.

Your other team the HPO team, is also made up of the governing hypothalamus and pituitary, along with the ovaries … now this team governs your production of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone

It’s when you hit perimenopause that your HPO team starts to slow down, it’s worked so hard for you since puberty, it’s up for retirement and a well earned rest. Your body however still needs those s*x hormones, and that’s where the HPA axis comes in to help out, and where the madness begins!!

Because we live such stressful lives nowadays, from our poor work life balance, a have it all/do it all society producing years of physical, and emotional stress, along with chemical stress from everyday toxins. Our HPA team can’t cope, and our s*x hormones decline quickly.

When this happens we suffer from anxiety, depression or low mood, insomnia, low or no libido, weight gain, loss of muscle and muscle tone, no energy and feel like our world is falling apart

We need to work out what going on, where the symptoms are coming from, which team member is out of whack and then take steps to improve that hormonal picture.

Asides from working on the endocrine glands and other reflexes of the feet, we need to consider lifestyle to help that HPA team out. Starting to understand and address the imbalance in the body.

Looking at lifestyle and committing to change, improving those imbalances can be life changing.

You have lived through your early teens since puberty where there was a hormonal shift, and a shift in lifestyle, before going into your late twenties and thirties where there will have been another hormonal shift and change in lifestyle. Here we are in our mid to late 40’s …. This is where we have the chance to make changes for our later years.

It’s no secret that with declining hormones comes long term chronic disease, after menopause women are more subject to certain cancers, heart disease, stroke etc …. This is a time where we need to make changes for both prevention of disease and to help balance those hormones, providing us with an easier transition into our menopausal years.

As women we need to be proactive, and we really do need to ask ourselves “ who do I want to be for this next phase of my life?”

You hold the key to your future health
