A little reminder that arrived with my skincare order from Sonsie today…

“I celebrate growth, not perfection.”

Such a simple message, but one perhaps that so many of us need to hear.

It’s easy to fall into the pressure of needing to have it all together... to be doing things “right”, to be further along, to feel better than we do.

I often see in the therapy room how the pressure to be “perfect” can show up for my clients, especially when there’s a deeper fear of not being enough, of being judged, or of getting things wrong.

But growth and acceptance don’t look like perfection.
They look like small shifts, gentle progress, and learning to stay with yourself even when things feel uncertain.

We don’t need to be perfect…
we just need to meet ourselves where we are, knowing our “best” will shift from one moment to the next.

And maybe that’s enough... to be yourself, just as you are. 🌿

We’re not meant to hold the weight of the whole world all at once… and yet sometimes it can feel like we are.

There’s a lot happening in the world right now, and many people have been feeling a little more unsettled…
this quiet kind of overwhelm, like our nervous system is holding more than it knows what to do with.

I notice this in myself at times too, perhaps more so these past few months.

And in those moments, I’ve learned I don’t always need to figure anything out. I just need something that meets me where I am.

For me… it’s often music.

A song that holds the feeling I can’t quite put into words. Something that lets me feel, without needing to explain.

Sometimes it releases frustration.
Sometimes it expresses sadness.
Sometimes it just helps me feel a little less alone in it.

There’s something powerful about letting yourself sit with a piece of music… the way it can gently shift emotion, or lift your mood, without needing to do anything else.

Just listening.
Just feeling.
And allowing your body to settle, even just a little.

Maybe there’s a piece of music waiting to meet you there too. 🌿

After my mum passed away, I found myself spending more time on my own than I ever had before.

A walk in nature, lunch alone, no one to talk to but yourself… and to begin with, it felt so uncomfortable... like something was missing, like I should be filling the space.

For a while, the quiet felt heavy and empty.
Like I didn’t quite know how to be in it.

But slowly, something began to shift.
The quiet didn’t feel so heavy.
The space didn’t feel so empty.

I started to learn that being alone isn’t the same as being lonely.

That there can be something gentle, even healing, in those moments where it’s just you with your thoughts, your breath, your surroundings.

Now, I find myself at times seeking these quiet spaces…
though it feels very different to choose time alone, rather than feel the absence that comes with loss and grief. It’s a chance to reconnect and just be.

If you’re someone who finds being on your own difficult, you’re not alone in that. It can take time, but there is something very steady and grounding in learning how to be with yourself.

So… weekends like this remind me that learning to be with ourselves is something we can gently grow into. 🌿

At Therapy in the City, we make space for what has long gone unspoken.

I’m Nicole.
Hypno-Psychotherapist.
Founder of Therapy in the City.

A listener of stories.
A weaver of inner worlds.

Alongside me is my husband Steve, who works as a Men’s Aliveness Coach, supporting clients in their own process of growth and self-understanding.

My sister Jade is our Practice Manager… the steady presence behind the scenes.

This page is a space for noticing.
For the patterns we carry.
For the inner conversations that often go unheard.

Here, I share reflections from inside the therapy room,
observations, themes and glimpses into this work.

If you follow, you’ll find perspective… not quick fixes.
Depth… not generic advice.

And if this work resonates, there are 1:1 sessions, courses, and retreats to explore.

We are an independent private practice.
Built on trust.
Rooted in presence.
Committed to the depth this work asks of both therapist/coach and client.

As it is to hold silence, my 2026 began quietly.

Not with resolutions.
Not with fixes...but with noticing.

Noticing the patterns we carry.
The moments we’ve missed.
The connections waiting to be seen.
The roles we learned to play.
The ways we learned to leave ourselves in order to belong.

Therapy is not about becoming someone new.
It is a space to meet the parts of you that were never fully seen.

This year, Therapy in the City will be a space for stories and reflections… glimpses into the mind of a therapist,
and the inner worlds of the people I work with.

Because something powerful happens
when someone is truly understood.

I am a listener of stories.
A weaver of inner worlds.

I’ve learned that what lives beneath the surface is rarely random. Often, what looks like chaos is simply something waiting to be understood.

The inner world always speaks.
Most people have just never truly felt listened to.

If you are here, you are part of the story now... Welcome. ✨

This festive season, I hope you find the time to step aside from any overwhelm, expectations and gently settle into the quiet honesty of winter. Rather than forcing cheerfulness or recreating picture-perfect traditions, simply slow down, breathe deeply, and rediscover the season on your own terms.

Thank you all for sharing time with me this year… I look forward to continuing your journey with you in 2026.

Merry Christmas!

“Not everything that comes back for Christmas is meant to stay.” 🎄

This time of year can soften our boundaries, especially for those with anxious attachment. Old connections can feel comforting, even when the ghost of Christmas past says otherwise.

Nostalgia isn’t the same as safety.
And intensity isn’t intimacy.

This season, let green flags like consistency, calm, and emotional availability guide your choices.

Your nervous system deserves calm this season too ✨

Thought I’d share a few pics from our team festive day out. We opted for something a little different with a trip back in time at Mary Kings Close in Edinburgh ❄️

Also… just a little reminder about upcoming leave in December. We will be taking a two week break over the festive period to spend time with family, friends and recharge our batteries ready to step into 2026 with you.

I personally will be on leave from 20 Dec and back in clinic from Monday 5 Jan. My diary is fully booked for December and January is already filling up, so don’t forget to book in now for 2026 to avoid disappointment.

Steve has decided to open a few limited appointments between Christmas and New Year for men’s coaching. These are available in person or online.

If you would like to book therapy with myself or men’s coaching with Steve, drop our practice manager Jade an email (booktherapyinthecity@gmail.com) and she can get you booked in. She will be monitoring emails over the break but not daily, so touch base now or before 20th December to ensure you get booked in for the start of the year. 🙏🏻

…and I’m not talking about the “collapsing on the sofa because you’ve done too much” kind of slowing down.

I mean the kind that feels like wrapping your hands around a warm mug, exhaling, and letting your whole nervous system soften.

These quiet moments matter.
Taking time to pause and reconnect with your inner landscape helps reduce stress, release expectations, and come back home to yourself.

This is exactly the feeling behind our new winter guide So This Is Christmas? and why we chose to launch our new My Therapy in the City platform in this season. It’s a gentle, therapeutic space created especially for those who don’t want to sprint into the festive season pretending everything’s fine.

So… if you’re craving a calmer December, softer rituals, grounding, and a season that actually holds you, not drains you… we think yule love it.

Inside you’ll find:
• 6 softly written therapeutic chapters
• Winter reflections and soothing rituals
• Actionable steps that don’t overwhelm
• 6 calming hypnotherapy audios
• A beautiful PDF you can return to again and again

All for ÂŁ37, ready to start today.

If December feels heavy, noisy, or “too much” or you simply want to do the season your way this guide was created for you.

✨To the women ready to awaken their wild, untamed selves… know you are everything you will ever need.✨

You are courage, strength and compassion.
The person you are searching for is already within you, you just need to reconnect with her.

A few weeks ago I stood on the cliffs of Neist Point on the Isle of Skye and the wind was blowing a hoolie. I felt the power of being fully in my body, fully myself as that wild wind wrapped itself around me.

When I saw the photo today, it reminded me that for you to build an empowered self-relationship, it is to meet yourself in every season… to find the thing that grounds you, the space, the place to hold your emotions not silence them. To remember your softness is not weakness and your wildness is your truth.

It is to remember her…
…the one who feels deeply, moves freely and trusts her inner voice again.

This is the work. This is the way!

I feel deeply privileged to hold this space with women, supporting them through psychotherapy, expressive art and somatic hypnosis as they release old patterns, heal attachment wounds and awaken the wild, authentic selves that they have always carried.

✨Take a moment this weekend to connect with your untamed self.

🤍 THERAPIST LIFE - As you know Steve and I were out of office last week and this is why… we eloped to the beautiful Isle of Skye and exactly a week ago today we said our vows on the beach between the rocks, witnessed by the ocean.

Thanks to everyone for your well wishes… we’re back to work now and look forward to seeing you all in your sessions.
