Falling UP Living in Art Destigmatizing indoor and outdoor mentored art collaborations for improved wellbeing Participants' artwork was shown at the Fire Station Creative in 2024.

Falling UP Living in Art is a 'wellbeing through art' project that consists of an artistic mentoring service, which also offers bespoke creative collaborative projects indoors in a studio at the Fire Station Creative, Dunfermline, and outdoors in local woodlands. This project originated in 'Falling UP', which was a family collaborative art-process created by Dr Drew Walker in 2016, as part of his personal recovery. This art-process subsequently developed into his art-practice for his PhD research. The name 'Falling UP' was chosen as it became the recovery journey that he embarked upon after 'falling down' into mental illness before his 'falling up' to recovery. Falling UP Living Art's process and ethos is inspired by Dr Walker's PhD research into the innovative art and healthcare system at the House of Artists in Gugging, Austria, where a group of mentally ill residential patients live as self-taught artists in a lifestyle of recovery and purpose within communal art-process in a hugely successful socially integrative process. Dr Walker's own art practice, (Falling UP) currently consists of ongoing artistic collaborations with 32 collaborators (50% of whom suffer from different degrees of mental illness). His collaborators encompass those in the medical field (psychiatrists, art therapists, psychotherapists, neurologists, occupational therapists and nurses), artists (illustrators, painters, sound artists, actors, photographers, secondary school art teachers, higher education art tutors, and designers). These collaborations have resulted in 9 Falling UP advocacy exhibitions across Scotland that explore though artistic creativity, the theme of art, mental illness and recovery. 2 of these exhibitions have taken place in the Scottish Parliament for parliamentarians and their staff. Artworks created by participants attending the Falling UP Living in Art studio were showcased during the Falling UP display at The Scottish Parliament in 2022. Dr Walker has also done did pop-up displays of participant art in Austria - at the House of Artists in Gugging and around Vienna. Since 2015, Dr Walker and his family have delivered indoor and outdoor creative activities for a diverse range of clients who suffer from different mental illnesses, such as - drug and alcohol addiction, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Schizophrenia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Difficulties, Cognitive Impairments, in addition to physical difficulties (such as wheelchair dependent clients) and those with Spina Bifida. Falling UP has also worked with carers and family members of those with mental illnesses. Carers who bring clients to activities are encouraged to take part themselves as part of Falling UP's ethos of mutuality. Falling UP Living in Art activities are led by Falling UP Living in Art mentors, which consist of Dr Walker and his family (who are artists), and others who have a personal stake in art, mental illness and recovery. Participants do not require any prior experience or talent in making art. The pace of collaborative support is gentle, and at the most comfortable level for all participants.

Ann finishes her latest artwork, which is a portrait of a friend. After experimenting with gridding to achieve a closer approximation to the facial features and proportion of the photo reference, Ann decide to go with her natural instinct of creating a free handed drawing. The result captures the essence of the subject with less emphasis on technical precision. Dropping the scale also made for an impactful portrait with a big heart.

Long exposure photography was also used outdoors at Falkland House School to capture co-created performance art with pupils. Some were poised like dynamic sentinels on plinths or stood on grass making their presence felt, through their choice of expression and type of motion. Objects were used as well as the body itself to create dramatic scenes. This type of photography allowed for each incremental step in individual performance to be pictured, leading to abstract form emerging as an outcome.

Next in the Falling UP at Falkland House School series is an insight into some of the sound art we created together. Neil brought his electric guitar and amp for soundscape generation. The basement area of the school provided an ideal acoustic atmosphere for these sound experiments.

In a brief interlude from the Falling UP at Falkland House School posts, here is an oil pastel drawing of a cat by Rod. His depiction of a friend's cat captures the essence of feline qualities, especially with the inquisitive look in its eyes. Before Rod finished this artwork, it took on a more abstract hypnotic aesthetic. Rod gave himself the challenge of doing a black cat on black paper which resulted in a more subtle outcome.

During our project at Falkland House School, we took our prototype stag on a tour around the building, bringing the outside inside. Moments of creative fun and play ensued as we posed the stag in different areas and on various surfaces.

Next in the Falling UP at Falkland House School series are visuals showing long-exposure light drawing. Here, momentary action is distilled through photography, capturing participants' articulation with light from torches or mobile phones. Random movement was complemented with specific shape drawing or writing in the air.

Recently, my Falling UP team and I finished delivering a programme of art collaborations at Falkland House School. Over the coming days, I'll be uploading various snapshots of the creative activities we worked on with participants. In this first post, the visuals showcase the wooded creatures we created together and which 'lived' on site for many weeks.

Craig continues his run of portraiture by beginning a new portrait, which after a few hours the resultant mark-making sees the subject emerging from the canvas as almost fully realised. Contrastingly, Audrey studiously continues working on her artwork depicting the city of Dunfermline involving spiritual symbolism. Artists in the studio work at their own chosen pace that is natural and comfortable for their art-process. Some work on artworks longitudinally, whilst others prefer to finish pieces after one or two visits.

A moment for a creative collaborative consult with Norma, Ann and Michael whilst we arrange a multitude of Keith's artworks to photographed. A Hands on experience for discussion and aesthetic judgement transposes Keith's art into one unified piece that exists temporarily in place as a physical grouping but lives on digitally.

James has been working on small studies of hands and animal faces. His decision to use a limited colour palette draws attention to the structural element in these pieces and the careful description of his subjects.

Michael has been working on one of his latest artworks which depicts a viewpoint of Dunfermline as observed from the Fire Station Creative. One of Michael's consistent themes is to capture nature from photographs that he's taken either out in nature or from an indoor vantage point. This particular artwork of his shows the benefit of working on toned paper, in that you can utilise it as a default tone for the mediums you choose to work with.

On the penultimate day of the Falling UP 9.0 exhibition, one of Scotland's most famous living artists and a former European Citizen of the Year, my dear friend Richard Demarco, paid a very special visit to experience the display.

I had the immense honour of giving Richard a tour of Falling UP 9.0, telling him about the artworks that were featured.

I've known Richard since I was a small boy. He has been of significant inspiration to my life and his wise words and powerful presence have been integral to the Falling UP exhibition series since its inception. In fact, Richard opened Falling UP 1.0 (also known as Falling UP into a Redemptive Community) at the Fire Station Creative in November 2016.

Falling UP 9.0 has had such a positive response at the Fire Station Creative. A special feature of this Falling UP exhibition is that some artworks are being shuffled and repositioned with new pieces being added . The changing state of display means that repeat viewings of the exhibition leads to new experiences and encounters. The exhibition runs until March 3rd for those who haven't yet seen it, and for those who are enjoying seeing its evolutionary phases.

Falling UP 9.0 is now up and running at the Fire Station Creative in Dunfermline until March the 3rd.

Please come and see the ninth iteration of our Falling UP exhibition series, which centres on the theme of ‘art, mental illness and recovery’. Falling UP 9.0 features art by 43 participants from our art collective. We create our art within the ‘living in art process’, which underpins our collaborative project.

Please note that the Fire Station Creative gallery is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
