Feelin’ beachy 😎 There are worse backdrops for a training session!

George helped me assess lovely Finlay the Lurcher’s feelings towards other dogs today. Sometimes behaviour displays can look quite different to the underlying emotions and motivations - and despite his big voice and movements, Finlay actually really just wanted to make friends and didn’t know how to enter into an interaction appropriately 🥹🫶

Stunning Poppy’s third session 🥰 Poppy’s owner got in touch for help with teaching Poppy to be reliable off the lead - she is a super speedy, driven little spaniel, and a teenager to boot 🤭

However, it turns out that Poppy’s owner has actually done a brilliant job raising her, and has nurtured a very sensitive and observant dog who responds to her every move - and whilst this is actually exactly what we love, it can also mean that if the handler is hesitant or inadvertently ‘pushing’ into the dog’s space when they are wanting them to come back, it can result in the dog creating more space (think spatial pressure) or hesitating to return.

So, whilst we are still teaching Poppy a whistle recall to have a more distinct, easily audible recall cue up our sleeves, we are primarily fine-tuning her owner’s handling techniques and body language, and building trust and confidence in the fact that Poppy will indeed respond when asked ❤️

Would you look at this? 🥹🥰 Just Brendan, the Cypriot rescue pup, grabbing a coffee-to-go with his human ☕️

From being scared of even going for a tiny quiet walk to dipping his toes into busy city centre life - what a transformation! ⭐️

Supporting rescue pups who have had limited socialisation experiences is a challenging journey, and Team Brendan have embraced it with all of its ups and downs 👏

Our awesome Team Red dipped their toes into public access test practice today and smashed it ✨

The public access test is a way to measure assistance dogs against a widely accepted standard - it looks at the team’s overall demeanour and confidence, the dog’s training skills, and how the team navigates the general public. Assistance dogs are absolutely not robots and we do not expect them to be, but we do ensure that they are able to feel confident, behave politely and remain as inconspicuous as possible when working in public spaces 🙌

Team Red also got to start on trolley training today 🛒 So much fun!

When I tell you I’m in love…🥹🫶 Meet Brendan, a hound cross puppy from Cyprus who only recently moved to Scotland 💙

Welcoming a rescue dog is often not as breezy and lovely as social media portrays - in fact, it can physically and emotionally exhausting and make you question your life choices 😅 - and Brendan and his new owner had a bit of a turbulent start. We triaged the teething challenges via email and video consultation, and are now starting in-person sessions to help introduce gorgeous Brendan to everything that pet dog life entails 🥰

Thank you to Team Finnlan for your kind words 🩵 You’ve done brilliantly!

“I’ve had quite a few sessions with Christina, and I can’t thank her enough for helping me and my dog, Finn is a large, bouncy, friendly dog and I needed him to be focused on me when out and about. He was so quick to learn, I still believe it was really myself that went through the training. I enjoyed our sessions so much that I will be following on with MY training with Christina, with Finn along for the experience, I needed it more than he did, if I’m honest. I can’t recommend Christina highly enough, after having dog trainers before Christina, who were basically useless, I will be calling on Christina again in the near future for a review of what I have learned.“

Lovely session with puppy Zammo and his owner, helping them troubleshoot some habits that have formed on walks and talking them through different interactions “in situ” ❤️ Such a good puppy!

Teaching lovely Lizzie how to opt in to putting her harness on ❤️

Lizzie is fortunate to have very observing owners who noticed that she wasn’t super keen on having her current harness put on. Together, we looked at the potential reasons for this, and have opted to introduce her to a different style of harness, and use shaping to ensure we work at a pace she is comfortable with.

Lizzie did a super job and quickly felt confident enough to voluntarily pop her nose through the neck opening ⭐️

Well done to Team Sonja, and thank you for the lovely review 🥹 It has been a pleasure! 🩵

“Christina is an excellent dog trainer who helped me better understand my dog Sonja’s behaviour and the relationship I have with Sonja. Christina was really supportive and encouraging throughout the process. My dog has learned impressive new skills in just four weeks. In addition, I thought my dog was nervous around other dogs (because I have never owned dogs before and wasn’t sure how to interpret their interactions), however Christina observed Sonja and quickly noticed that she actually does have confidence around other dogs and can read their behaviour well. Sonja just needed some help not over-reacting to dog cues she picks up, and she has come on leaps and bounds with this thanks to Christina’s advice. Christina was very supportive of us as owners, and understood when I felt stressed about Sonja’s behaviour, especially during the tricky bits that naturally arose for Sonja when she was learning new behaviours. I have a lot of confidence and trust in Christina’s skills and knowledge and would recommend her to anyone who feels their dog needs some extra support managing their behaviour.”

It’s lovely Lizzie again! 😍

This little lady has been settling in soo well and with her dedicated owners’ guidance, she has been making doggie friends and has been enjoying new freedoms 🌳🌿

As with many rescues, especially those that have had a long journey and a significant change of lifestyle behind them, we will continue to see the odd little unexpected challenge arise. This can sometimes be concerning to new owners, especially if those behaviours don’t align with the description of the dog prior to adoption.
Wee Lizzie’s owners certainly have her back and are ready to help her get through any further bumps in the road 🥹

Back with handsome big boy Finnlan today to practise his manners in a more exciting environment. He did soo well walking calmly and slowly by his owner’s side and holding it together around lots of excited dogs ⭐️

Lots of sunshine and good dogs this week 🥰

Gorgeous Sonja practised her patience without vocalising and showed off her excellent doggie language skills around other dogs this afternoon, and Stanley the Mini Dachshund was a star pupil working around lots of exciting little children and other dogs, too. Earlier this week Winston the Working Cocker also smashed a walk in the park working around lots of people and dogs, Zammo the Cockapoo puppy nailed his crate training, and Eddy the Frenchie worked really hard on his frustration tolerance and impulse control. Finn, Ru and Bonnie the Working Cockers also did some beautiful work around other dogs, and working through old behaviour patterns.

Well done all! 🫶
