I am Amy and I am a qualified clinical hypnotherapist, Sleeptalk practitioner, coach and certified yoga teacher (CYT 200) offering a range of solutions that can help you cope with life's challenges - be it overcoming stress and anxiety, improving performance, taking control over a phobia, improving confidence and self esteem, changing behaviours and getting rid of unwanted habits or simply feeling better about yourself (amongst many others).

I first experienced hypnotherapy almost ten years ago and I've not looked back since! Experiencing it from a client's perspective and realising the profound changes it had on me led me to train as a therapist. I have a great passion for helping others and it is my privilege that I can support people to instigate the changes that they would like to make in their lives. I have seen so many wonderful success stories over the years and it has been a real pleasure to be with clients as they work towards what is right and appropriate for them.

I have been working in the area of training and personal development throughout my career having originally graduated with an honours degree in psychology. I built on this with further qualifications in teaching, training, professional coaching, clinical hypnotherapy and hypnobirthing. Working as a practitioner in this area for many years across the public, private and voluntary sector, I have found hypnotherapy to be an effective way of helping people to overcome barriers that are impeding their lives. I have worked with individuals and groups across the UK, Ireland and internationally to identify the personal and/ or team outcomes that are important to them. By tapping into their own unique set of skills, resources, and capabilities, I have supported my clients with identifying and implementing the changes they want to see in their lives. My hypnotherapy practice is underpinned by life coaching, self management, neurolinguistic programming (NLP), cognitive behavioural therapy and solution focussed brief therapy principles. Essentially, this means that I work in a direct and goal focussed way: what is it you want to achieve and what is the best way for you to get there?

Phew. Just worked through most of my inbox / WhatsApp etc after it’s been neglected all week. I’m back to work properly tomorrow in the studio. If I’ve not replied to your email yet,I promise I will have done by early next week.

But for now, the central heating is on, vino is calling and I’m all prepped for Strictly with my little fam.

Have a lovely Saturday evening folks and thanks again everyone for all your comments/messages etc asking after my girl (who incidentally is in mighty form).

For those in yoga classes, see you from tomorrow 💓

Thankfully my daughter is out of hospital and we are back returning to normal after what has been a stressful week.

Those moment of fight or flight wreak havoc on the nervous system and especially Saturday and into Sunday when we were waiting for antibiotics to kick, I was extremely anxious as any one in that situation is likely to be.

Whilst it is impossible to eradicate the anxiety completely, I found myself return to habitual patterns and movements to help ease my distress and regulate my nervous system.

One of the weird things I found helpful was walking through the various swirls of spots on the floor on the main hospital concourse in the Vic. They swirled and interlaced and the swirling pattern and the space between the coloured spots gave me a point of focus to literally put one foot in front of the other - in those moments of uncertainty and waiting for answers, that was literally all I could do.

I returned to it a few times to help regulate myself during my stay in the hospital and once my daughter was well enough to move around, I showed it to her too.

I don't know if the spots are simply a design feature or if they are something more purposeful, but either way, they really helped me begin to regulate in moments of high distress.

It's something I teach every client. Whether it is simple bilateral tapping - one hand at a time tapping on the thigh on the same side. Or sometimes taking a humming breath on the exhale. The simplest things sometimes are the most effective during moments of high distress.

It's not going to solve my pain. But I knew having a more regulated nervous system kept my wits about me. It helped me to ask the right questions for my daughter but also kept me in a regulated state so that my daughter was not a witness to my fear and distress.

Wow. Thank you so much to everyone for all your comments in relation to my post about my daughter’s hospital admission. I hadn’t expected such a massive response but am so grateful to you all.

I started to reply to each comment on my post but realised pretty soon I’d be there all evening 😹. After getting out of hospital yesterday, we decided instead to treat the girls to a well deserved dinner in hugosdalgetybay (after nearly a week of hospital food).

Hope you understand but also that your good wishes are so appreciated

I’ve passed all good wishes to my gorgeous girl and she’s so delighted that everyone is thinking of her

And I’m so glad to be returning to normal after a stressful few days

Thanks to Julia at Julia Daker at Calm Armour Yoga and Lisa in The Yoga Social for keeping the show on the road.

All going well,I’ll be back with you on the mat from Sunday

For those who were booked into the cancelled soundbath,I’m rescheduling to Sunday October 5th. There will also be a soundbath on Wednesday October 15th if the earlier date doesn’t suit

And I will be in touch with all hypnotherapy and reiki clients (if I haven't been already) to reschedule your sessions over the next few days💓

🌹SOMATIC YOGA FOR WOMEN🌹

RELEASE ANXIETY, ANGER, GUILT AND SHAME THROUGH POWERFUL MOVEMENT

I have been honing these classes over the past year and am so proud of what they have deceloped into, and how successful and popular they are becoming.

This class is like no other that I offer.

It is POWERFUL

It is CATHARTIC

And it sells out consistently each month.

🌹Friday 3rd of October @ 17.15-18.15: Releasing guilt and shame

🌹Sunday 19th of October @ 10.30 -11.30: Anxiety release; Finding your centre

Expect more of the same:

⭕️ Lots of primal and intuitive feminine movement; swaying, rocking undulating

🥊 More punches, kicks and shakes to stir up and release stagnant energy and discharge emotion

😱 Maybe even a scream to really release

🙌 Saying YES to more you want to let go of

🎶 and of course the musical surprises that I love to pounce on you with….

It was when I was teaching somatic yoga a few months ago, that something happened to change everything in the way I would teach every class after it.

I was guiding everyone to a move called 'clearing the table' - essentially using your arms to imagine that you are moving everything off your metaphorical table. As I was doing it myself, I began to intuitively and aggressively emote through my mouth. I didn't guide the class to do it. They all did it instinctively once seeing me doing it.

When I reflected after that class, I realised that there was something in that simple act that we all needed. A release that is so much more powerful when combined with breath, movement and sound.

One of my frequent somatic yoga ladies commented that my classes are getting wilder and wilder. And they are. But I'm led by you. I'm seeing what is supporting your therapeutic shifting. You're all guiding to me to make it even bigger. Even bolder. Even louder.

These classes are not therapy (or maybe they are 🤔) but they are most definitely therapeutic. I’ve never had so much feedback about classes than I have had about these. I can feel the power as I’m designing your sequences at home. But they are even more powerful when your collective energy comes together in the room. I’m so grateful for your trust in me and the process.

Class is £11

Also upcoming soundbath dates are as follows:

💓Wednesday 15th of October @ 18.15 - 19.30 (£15)

Something has come up quite a lot in many of one to one therapy sessions recently.

That voice... an inherited voice. A protector of sorts.

The voice that says:

'Don't try that. You might fail'
'You're not working hard enough'
'You're not doing well enough'

These are well-worn mental grooves laid down early in life. Usually they are voices that we adopted- from a teacher, or caregiver or a friend.

Over time, these messages began to be internalized.

They may have served a purpose at one pointin your life - to help you fit in, or not to do anything too dangerous; especially as a child!

But now, they may be the very patterns keeping you stuck.

I love working with clients to tame that inner critic. We do it in a few parts:

Start by noticing the pattern. Are you people pleasing? Or over working?

Then try giving that inner voice a name: Recognising the inner 'Miss Minchin' (my name for mine!) or 'Miss Trunchbull' for what they are.

Listen to what this inner voice is saying.

And then recognise what happens when this inner critic pops up. What do you do? Pause.... Notice her.... and then reassure her. It may sound odd, but when you are doing this, you are reassuring that very young part of yourself that she is ok. That little person learnt a long time ago that she had to do things a certain way in order to feel safe. When you are being compassionate to that inner voice, you are being compassionate to yourself.

Naming it helps because this voice isn’t YOU. It’s a part.

And every part deserves to be heard, understood, and eventually integrated.

How would it then feel to listen to another voice... a loving voice, the voice of the heart that says it is ok to stop, to rest, that you have done your best for today. Or in this situation

Try it, And let me know how you get on...

So instead of giving power to your inner bully, give power to your inner magician instead!

🚨important post alert 🚨

I am currently sat by my daughter's bed as she is treated in hospital for sepsis.

The emergency is over - thankfully, and the reason why I am able to take the time to write this important post.

Sadly, this is not her first rodeo; this is her fifth time fighting sepsis in her short time on this planet.

As this is sepsis awareness month, I wanted to take this time to highlight this most recent chapter in our story in the hope that I can help other familes recognise the signs. But also to encourage anyone with sick children / loved ones to remember the importance of trusting that all important gut instinct that we all have. And to use that instinct to advocate on behalf of them.

On Saturday morning past, my daughter woke with a sore and stiff neck. Because she has fought meningitis previously, my initial instinct was to check her temperature. It wasn't overly elevated, but combined with a stiff neck, I wasn't prepared to take any chances.

I didn't even pause to let the dogs out to wee, knowing the importance of every minute. And at 6AM, we were hotfooting up the M90 to A and E, where she was checked over and discharged after her behaviour improved after some calpol.

Whilst her humour was good over the course of the day, once evening came, I had noted physical changes that I wasn't happy with; a rapidly expanding rash amongst others including a deterioration in her behaviour.

Another wait in A and E before being admitted to Paeds; CT scans, IV antibiotics and fluids. It was a long and scary night.

She is well on the mend a few days on - though I suspect we've another few nights courtesy of NHS Fife - and she is returning to her wonderfully bubbly and vibrant self. It is always so scary to see her beautiful little light subdued.

I am excited about getting home and back to normality but in the meantime, I am grateful for that wonderful gut instinct of mine.... and this is what I wanted to take a few moments to share:

Please, please, PLEASE always trust your gut. Remember that clinical evidence is ONLY a piece of the picture (albeit a very important one). No one knows your child/ loved one more than you do. If there is any change that you are simply not happy with, you are more than within your rights to get that checked.

Thankfully, our story has always ended well. And it will this time too. My strong and resilient little woman has fought and continues to fight this ravaging illness and pulled through. She bears no significant lasting effects; physical nor psychological (aside from a slight needle phobia that puts my professional skills to the test). She - we - were and are extremely lucky. We will remain eternally grateful to the amazing staff at NHS Fife and NHS Lothian who have helped us over the years - clinical and otherwise - and will never forget and be able to thank enough the friend and family support networks who helped pull our family through tremendously challenging times.

This time the award goes to the amazing Lowe crew. My husband - who was living the dream playing golf in Spain at the time - had to get an urgent flight home on in the early hours of Sunday morning and could only get as far as Prestwick.

Step in the Lowe family. Taxi driver Martin who drove to pick him up, counsellors Mel and Hannah who tag teamed to support one each of my girls whilst I was in a horrible FREEZE state in the A and E children’s waiting area and had to take a moment (many moments actually) to knock myself out of it. And not forgetting Z and Adam who have offered their companionship, love and home to my other little woman who was out on a limb whilst I stayed in hospital with Sosi and waited on my husband returning from Spain. Where would we be without them on this occasion. Or any occasion. The best friends one could ask for.

To say that I never want another family to experience what we went through is an understatement. And if this post helps just one or two families to recognise the signs of such a terrible condition, I will be content.

Here are the main signs of sepsis, though of course it is hugely important to say that these are also symptoms of many less serious conditions (taken from NHS Inform):

Sepsis:
🚨 feeling dizzy or faint

🚨 a change in mental state – like confusion or

🚨 disorientation

🚨 diarrhoea

🚨 nausea and vomiting

🚨 slurred speech

🚨 severe muscle pain

🚨 severe breathlessness

🚨 less urine production than normal – for example, not urinating for a day

Symptoms may not occur in this order. Nor may all symptoms be present.

If in doubt, please, please don’t delay. Trust your instinct. And TRUST YOUR VOICE. Call your GP or 999.

Those minutes may be crucial.

Thank you for reading. And if it feels appropriate, please share. Amy x

As an aside: all yoga classes ARE ON. I am rescheduling the majority of my 1:1 work at the moment. But if you haven’t heard from me by now, please assume that our session is on.
