At last, Westminster has promised radical improvements for our immigrant colleagues waiting to practice dentistry in our country.
We've been calling for the hostile environment to change for a long time which, in the midst of a profound NHS dental access crisis seemed like shooting ourselves in the foot.

This seismic change to the dental workforce feels like a quick fix.

This is a radical break from approaches taken to every other health profession. More new dentists will come through this pipeline as will graduate from UK dental schools.

These dentists will need wrap-around support to enable them to deliver NHS care. We certainly don’t have an immigration policy that offers real certainty they can build a future here.

But ultimately, it doesn’t matter whether a dentist qualifies in Manchester or Mumbai.

We won’t keep talent working within a failed, underfunded NHS system without real change.

Dr Graham reaches below the headline. The Scottish NHS Dental Access Crisis is bad enough, but at least we don't have this madness.

Another misleading headline about NHS dentistry.

The suggestion that dentists are somehow “returning” £900m ignores the real issue: most NHS dentists are not making money under the current system. The clawback happens because practices simply cannot recruit dentists willing to work under the UDA contract, where the funding is so low it often doesn’t even cover the cost of providing care.

Running an NHS practice means paying nurses, reception staff, labs, materials, equipment, indemnity and regulatory costs. When the fees paid for treatment don’t meet those costs, it becomes impossible to deliver the activity the contract demands.

This isn’t dentists choosing not to see patients — it’s a system that no longer works, where funding is so poor that clinicians are leaving the NHS and practices can’t recruit replacements.

Until the contract and funding are properly reformed, headlines like this just distract from the real problem: a broken NHS dental system that is driving dentists away. There won’t be any independent NHS practices left soon.

Excellent podcast.
We have managed to recruit an NHS dentist, but Scotland's NHS Dental Access Crisis is still dire.
Even recruiting private dentists is difficult.

🦷Why is it so hard to find an NHS dentist?

📻A must-listen state of the nation.
