Thank you all for the likes etc., I appreciate your support.

I was looking at the spa website today for a very posh Scottish hotel. A 50-minute massage (10-minutes shorter than my £40 one-hour massage) costs £145 and the reviews are not as good as mine are.

Plus, you can finish my massage with a full-body salt and olive oil full-body scrub, followed by a hot shower, then a facial cleanse, facial massage, facial and full body moisturising all included for an extra £10.

Three years ago…

I am closed tomorrow as I am attending a training course for the practical part of my herbal compress massage course.

Herbal compress massage has been practised for over five-thousand years. The skill and knowledge of plants and their healing properties to relieve pain and inflammation, has been passed down the generations in Thailand.

A selection of therapeutic herbs, including prai, ginger, turmeric and lemongrass, are wrapped in a muslin compress, steamed and applied in gentle pressing, circular and rolling movements.

Massage was generally used by royalty and the wealthy, in this instance, the king of Siam. It was also used to heal those in combat ie soldiers, gladiators etc. Now, thanks to my great prices at The Healing Room, Dunfermline, massage is accessible to almost everyone.

The Healing Room Dunfermline is a home-based therapy business set up in 2016 by Patricia Gray. The therapies on offer are: Swedish hot-oil massage; body scrubs; Thai herbal compress massage; Indian head massage; hypnotherapy; life coaching; led-meditations; aromatherapy and reiki. The business is unique in that it has exclusively only ever been awarded five-star reviews by hundreds of clients, on multiple sites, over five years.

Many clients comment on the ambience of the room eg the comfort, lighting and scents used. An ioniser is used in the room before every treatment to cleanse the air. The window is also opened between appointments to ventilate the room. Face masks are available if necessary and the therapy bed is disinfected between every appointment. The therapist, Patricia, has been double vaccinated. An essential oil and mist diffuser is also used in the room ie the use of lavender, for example is proven to relieve stress and anxiety and water mist inhalation, which aids breathing. The therapy bed is heated. Cleanliness has been referred to in client reviews online. There are also mentions of how friendly Patricia is ie clients feel as if they have known her for years. A hot shower, clean, crisp, white towels, shower gel, and a bottle of cold water are available after every treatment.

The business was set up because Patricia has a neuromuscular condition, undiagnosed for seven years. After two years of no treatment Patricia began to look towards alternative therapies. When she was eventually diagnosed, by a neurologist, the only treatment offered was Botox, which caused serious side effects. During the first year of treatment Patricia choked regulalrly and this took one year to realise this was caused by Botox. The injection site for the Botox was changed, but the new site caused recurrent respiratory infections. By this time Patricia was well into her alternative therapies and treatments journey and decided to try where she could to use natural therapies. She personally used and highly values the treatments she learned and offers. She practised as a therapist to administer treatments, which helped her, to help others. She believes that alternative therapies can be more effective, combined with lifestyle changes, than the widespread use of anti-depressants and painkillers.

Swedish Hot Oil Massage
The most popular treatment is Swedish hot-oil massage. The length of treatment can be from 15-90 minutes and costs £10 per 15 minutes. A shoulder massage can last 15 minutes or someone might prefer a long 90-minute, full-body massage. The massage at The Healing Room is usually a deep tissue massage unless a lighter massage is requested. The massage is a mixture of effleurage; petrissage; and tapotement. £40

Body Scrub
A body scrub takes place only after a 60-minute, Swedish hot-oil massage. Directly after the massage the body is scrubbed vigorously using an exfoliating glove, salt and warm olive oil. The salt and oil are then showered off and the body is then moisturised using moisturiser applied using cotton gloves. The face is also massaged, cleansed and moisturised using facial moisturiser. £10 (only with massage).

Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy, which focuses the imagination and subconscious on any given issue to bring about positive change in thoughts, feelings or behaviour. Patricia prefers to have the client’s current difficulties and the change required, written down or typed and sent ahead of the session with one payment of £40, which covers the entire process. Patricia prepares a bespoke session, which is delivered at an agreed time and date; this can be repeated as often as is requested. She feels that massage beforehand can deepen the relaxation and acceptance of suggested changes in behaviour.

Hypnotherapy focuses on one issue and works with the subconscious mind. The client does not lose any control, nor can they be manipulated to do or think things they don't want. At all times the client remains in control and deeply relaxed. The client will be able to talk or get up and leave the room if they want to.

Common issues addressed through hypnotherapy are: smoking cessation; phobias; fears; weight loss and confidence issues. Patricia has worked with sports people to improve performance and with others to improve medical conditions among many other issues. She has also sought hypnotherapy for her own issues. Every therapy she has learned and practiced are therapies that have also helped her. £40

Life Coaching
A life coach encourages and counsels clients on a range of professional and personal issues. It is normally perceived that life-coaching is not advice; it is not counselling; it’s not mentoring and it is not administering therapy. Patricia was advised to undertake a life-coaching course alongside the hypnotherapy course training.

Obviously, there are all levels of coaching from coaching business leaders to helping someone on the first rung find their way to a succcessful career. I am more interested in helping people facing difficulties, life challenges, barriers, prejudice, and adversity to overcome these issues and find solutions where possible.

Life coaching is not supposed to be advice or counselling, mentoring or therapy. Patricia would rather administer therapy; source information to suit individual issues; help with adopting beneficial lifestyle changes; assist with personal goals; breaking down barriers; and oversee transitions and remove limiting beliefs. As a mature, educated person she can give advice obtained from life experience. £40

Reiki
Reiki was the first therapy Patricia used to try to overcome her own health and life issues, alongside practising meditation with Brahma Kumaris. She currently practices both self-reiki and meditation daily and has found both beneficial.

There is positive scientific research carried out on the practice of reiki, what it is and how it works. Reiki is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, which is a term used to describe a system of natural healing. The practice of reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Buddhist monk Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th century. Reiki works on every level, mental, physical, spiritual and is understood to promote the body’s regenerative self- healing ability.

We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of well-being. There are many variations of reiki, but in essence reiki works at bringing us into balance and is believed therefore to reinforce the body and mind’s natural ability to heal itself at all levels, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system or none. £40

Indian Head Massage
Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic practice that originated in India. It is usually practised in a seated position, but Patricia thinks it’s best done while the client is lying down. Patricia also thinks it’s more beneficial if carried out with at the same time as a face, shoulder and back, or full-body massage. Rather than have the client support their own head, they can relax and have their head held and supported by thetherapist. There are so many benefits to Indian head massage. It is used for migraines; it helps with sinus problems; reduces stress; relaxes; it’s comforting; assists with lymph drainage...it’s magical – like all massage. £40 including massage).

Thai Herbal Compress Massage
Thai herbal compress massage is used to complement a Swedish hot-oil massage. Herbal compresses are heated in a very hot water bath device and then left to drain. The hot herbal compresses are then applied to sore muscles and two compresses are used by the therapist’s both hands, for example, to run down either side of the spine. The heat feels wonderful on sore, tight muscles. The muscles expand and increase blood flow, lessening pain etc. £40

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy is the art and science of using pure essential oils to promote health and well-being. Aromatherapy treats the whole person ie it is holistic and assists the natural healing process where possible. Aromatherapy can strengthen the immune system and help with acute and chronic illness or disease. There is a growing body of scientific data supporting the theory that essential oils can support the immune system.

Many illnesses, physical and mental can be treated with: aromatherapy; hypnotherapy; reiki, meditation; massage; life-coaching; diet and lifestyle changes eg exercise rather than with prescription drugs. Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years. Ointments in the tomb of Tutankhamun (1320 BC) contained frankincense, which was still fragrant enough to be recognised. (Included with massage)

Led-meditations
Finding peace and calm in the chaos of life can be a real challenge. Stress and mental health problems are endemic and guided meditations can help. Patricia writes her own scripts; she can write what you want to hear. She can incorporate things that you enjoy, or would like to enjoy eg walking along the shore, in the forest...anything. Patricia believes that nature, exercise and good mental health go hand in hand, The benefits of meditation extend far beyond relaxation. In fact regular practice of meditation can: reduce anxiety: stress: depression: insomnia; general pain; and high blood pressure. Tell Patricia how you would like to relax eg sitting in a garden in the sunshine, for example and she will write a personal script for you. The client lies down on the therapy table, preferably after a massage, Patricia will take you through progressive relaxation eg tensing then relaxing muscles. Then she will talk you through a mediation while you lie and relax. (Included after massage)

This is something I wrote about reiki for a client:

There has been positive scientific research carried out on the practice of reiki, what it is and how it works. There are many animal owners who seek out reiki for their pets eg race horses etc., they swear that it works and that animals benefit and research backs this up. Therefore, if it works for animals, the likelihood is that it definitely works for humans too. The Reiki Council and Reiki Research can be found online offering testimony to reiki and its benefits and how it dramatically reduces stress in animals. Animals cannot pretend reiki reduces stress and monitoring records the reduction.

The method of receiving a reiki treatment from a practitioner is simple. The recipient remains clothed and lies on a couch and relaxes. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively, on or near the body. There is no massage or manipulation and the whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. It is also possible to receive distance reiki and there are many distance reiki sessions online eg Facebook groups and YouTube, which I like to listen to in the bath.

Reiki practitioners are not trained in diagnosis and will not offer any diagnosis or prognosis. If people are concerned about any symptoms of illness, they should see a doctor. Clients may or may not feel sensations during a reiki treatment. Benefits reported by clients include feeling heat and deep relaxation promoting a calm, peaceful sense of well being on all levels. Clients can feel emotional as they feel their energy changing and balancing. It is also common to see certain colours dependent on where the practitioner is working.

Reiki is taught by reiki master teachers, who have trained in the tradition passed on in person from master to student. Students go through a process of initiation/attunement to the reiki energy. They are then able to treat themselves and others, not only from a healing perspective, but also as an aid to personal development and spiritual growth – and I can personally testify that is exactly what happened to me. I feel this spiritual growth goes hand-in-hand with being in nature.

There are seven chakras and diagrams, positions, colours and further information etc., is easy to find online. The crown chakra is located about the head, it is the connection to the universe, the colour associated with this chakra is violet. This chakra is linked to the cosmos ie widening of belief systems; broader thinking; wider scope; wisdom and spirituality.

The next chakra is called the third eye chakra and is associated with clarity; intuition; wisdom; conscience; perception; higher consciousness; self-reflection; visionary traits; sixth sense; self-awareness; imagination; and creativity. When this chakra is balanced then we should have a wider perspective on the world, understanding and wisdom. The colour associated with this chakra is purple.

The throat chakra is obviously located in the throat, its colour is blue; this chakra is associated with communication and expression.

Once again, the heart chakra is obviously found at the location of the heart and the colour associated with this chakra is green. This chakra is involved with our ability to both give and receive love.

The solar plexus chakra is the centre of personal power and its colour is yellow. It is involved with: motivation; willpower; purpose and self-confidence. This chakra also governs the digestive system; gut feelings and stored emotions.

The sacral chakra is positioned just above the p***c bone, it's colour is orange. It is responsible for passions; sexuality; intimacy; money; creativity and joy. Balancing this chakra improves our relationships with ourselves and with others.

The root chakra is located at the bottom of the spine at the pelvic floor and is the site of feeling safety and security; its colour is red. When basic needs are met such as food; shelter; water and emotional needs, we feel grounded and secure when this chakra is balanced. Any imbalance can create anxiety; eating disorders and bladder issues.

Close your eyes and imagine deep roots going down into the earth from the bottom of your root chakra/body/feet. Then draw up this unseen energy of the earth into your body; this can give a feeling of stability; strength; power and reassurance.

The affirmations said every day, on rising, in relation to reiki are:

'Just for today, I release all anger,

Just for today, I release all worry,

Just for today, I will show my gratitude for all my many blessings,

Just for today, I will do my work with honesty and integrity,

Just for today I will honour and be kind to all living things.'

There is so much more to know about reiki, but I believe it has helped me in many ways.
