๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ญ โจ๏ธ As both a therapist and dance teacher, I spend a lot of time with Gen Z. After 18 years of working with young people (and surviving lockdown alongside them!), I can honestly say Iโve seen a huge shift in confidence, connection, and the basic life skills so many young people are struggling with.
At this point, Iโm adding to my vocabulary weekly in the dance studio - getting all the tea, and smiling at dancers as they audibly say they 'cooked' their turn sequence ๐ง
But jokes aside, what Iโm seeing is real.
In the therapy room, I see young people struggling deeply with self-worth, ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ฐ ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ฏโ๐ต ๐ฌ๐ฏ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ฐ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐บ ๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ, who people-please to feel accepted, who are terrified of speaking up for themselves, and who feel overwhelmed by even the smallest moments of discomfort - like making a phone callโช๏ธReturning an item in a shopโชStarting a conversationโชHandling rejectionโช๏ธSaying noโช๏ธAsking for help.
๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ด๐ฆ ๐ข๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ฃ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ค ๐ญ๐ช๐ง๐ฆ ๐ด๐ฌ๐ช๐ญ๐ญ๐ด - but they donโt always feel basic anymore.
And if weโre honest, many young people are trying to learn confidence, identity, and belonging through screens, through social media, and even through AI.

Confidence comes from showing up.
Communication comes from connection.
Resilience comes from fear.
Self-worth comes from REAL experiences, REAL relationships, and REAL encouragement.

Thatโs why spaces like dance, drama, and the performing arts matter so much. What looks like โjust a classโ is often where we learn discipline, build confidence, find belonging, expression and develop life skills!
These creative spaces teach us how to show up, ๐๐ฟ๐๐๐, work through fear, and realise our capabilities.
