Remedial Massage in Dunkeld now available in the Therapy Room at the super-friendly Dunkeld Gym, up the Blairgowrie Road. Are aches and pains stopping you doing the normal things in life, like sleeping, driving, working? Why not give remedial massage a go, and see if we can get you back on track. Appointments available now on Tuesdays (1.30-5.30) and Wednesdays (4-8pm), with some sessions possible on Fridays, too. Call the gym to book or message here to discuss your options.

There is no set routine to a remedial massage treatment. It depends totally on what problem the person presents with, from headaches to back aches, stiff necks to sore shoulders. I will discuss, assess, check mobility, pain levels, posture before laying hands on to release tight tissue and facilitat...

Our shoulder joints allow for extraordinary movement in our arms and upper body, until something goes wrong, that is. I had my own shoulder injury after getting tangled up in a lane rope in an outdoor swimming pool in Australia some years ago (I can tell the tale if you come for a treatment...). But in my own treatment rooms, I have seen all sorts of shoulder problems, from long-term postural issues (often the hardest to resolve), through hunched and bunched shoulder tops from stress, to repetitive strain from new mothers or child care workers holding kids constantly, and then traumas from sports injuries or falls. So when someone turns up with a 'shoulder problem,' there's always a story to hear and assessment to be done before the remedial massage can begin. If your shoulders are not as free-moving as you'd like, give remedial massage a go. Appointments in Perth at South Inch Osteo Clinic with Simon on Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays. Being a bit sparse on top means I don't get to see many hairdressers as the client; but as a remedial massage therapist, I meet a lot of hairdressers. In fact in my previous work in Australia, I think I saw all the six stylists employed in one salon, after their boss came and felt the benefits of a remedial treatment. All those hours standing, with arms raised and active means most of the aches and pains arise around hairdressers' shoulders and upper back, but the intricacy of hair stylists' work can mean forearm muscles tighten up too, not to mention tired feet from standing all day. So, come on Perth hairdressers, give yourselves a break and try a remedial massage - see if it helps you get through your working week pain-free. Appointments with Simon Duffin available Tuesday, Thursday or Saturdays. Call South Inch Osteo Clinic or message me here to book. (Photo credit: Polina Tankilevitch)

Most of us will experience lower back pain at some point in our lives. For many it is a long-term, chronic problem, and an acute episode can cause unbearable pain. When it's really bad, management of movement is often the best way forward, while adapting also your environment (be it the car seating, chairs at home or at work, or simply having someone move things so you can avoid that movement that makes the pain worse). My most effective treatments for acute back pain often involve discussion and advice than actual hands-on massage work; but with chronic back pain, remedial massage can help not only around the affected area, but to release tension and spasms that come on in other parts as a result of the chronic issue. I had back surgery 30 years ago - it's what got me into massage; and I had a few ni**les myself this weekend, reminding me to follow my own advice to let things calm down. So it felt like a timely reminder to post something here to flag the issue of back pain for the people of Perth. Plumbers are in demand and working hard in the Perth area. I know that because the plumber working on our leaks and blockages is run off his feet. But I know from my past dealings with plumbers, it's their backs and arms that seem to suffer the most. All that twisting into tight spots, and turning taps or fitting pipes. The forearms of plumbers in particular take the strain, with lower back problems from crouching and reaching those awkward pipes. So come on, plumbers of Perth & Kinross, give yourselves a break and give remedial massage a go. Appointments available Tuesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays- message here or call South Inch Osteos to ask about remedial massage.

New for people unable to book treatments during normal working hours, I will be available alternate Saturdays from 10.45am to 2.45pm starting October 8th. DM here or call the South Inch Osteo Clinic to book your 30 minute or 60 minute remedial massage. Why live with that niggling pain or muscle tighness just because you haven't time during the week to go see someone about it?

I'll be running these appointments after doing the Perth Parkrun at North Inch so drop me a line if you also do Parkrun and we can have a chat there about whatever your ni**le is.

A Fiver for your Feet? To mark World Reflexology Week, which runs through the last week of September, I will be offering taster sessions at 15 minutes for £5 next Tuesday and Thursday mornings (27 & 29 September) out of South Inch Osteo Cĺinic. If you've never tried reflexology, come and give your feet a break. Reflexology is based on the feet being a map of the whole body, with different points on the foot representing different parts and organs, from head and sinuses through stomach and digestion to spinal vertebrae. There isn't time to treat the whole body in 15 minutes, but give it a try and you may want more. Most people find it a really relaxing experience. Appointments available from 8am-1pm - call 01738 440220 to book or 07389866197 to discuss.

Headaches and migraines can stop us from doing the most basic daily activities. As a remedial massage therapist, they are actually what I enjoy treating the most, partly because they are so individual, with each person telling me of their distinct experiences of triggers, intensity, duration and where they are focused. But also because the way I work remedial so often gets great results in either duration, frequency or how badly they come on. Obviously in some cases, they are caused by underlying conditions massage can't help, but very often soft tissue work combined with pressure point work and reflexology can really alleviate symptoms.

I love coincidences in life, so I was very pleased to cross paths yesterday with another Remedial Massage Therapist working in Perth, who also trained in Australia, also in the last century (!), and believe it or not we even lived in the same small town south of Sydney (though at different times). Looking forward to collaborating in the coming months with April - check out her FB page https://www.facebook.com/aprilsstudio107

The COVID pandemic has changed the way most of us live and work, and it's certainly had its impact on the work of a massage therapist. Masks are now the norm in the treatment room, and we are all conscious of the need for better air circulation, and all the other health precautions we've learned in the last 2-3 years.

But it also affected what people are presenting with: home working, with desk arrangements not properly checked for good ergonomics led to a massive increase in shoulder, neck and lower back issues coming through the doors. There would be days when three or four clients in a row would present and say something along the lines of, "my shoulders just ache these days after all this home desk work." Thankfully remedial massage is great for these cases usually; along with some adjustments to furniture and equipment...

There's no routine or repeat sequence to a remedial massage session. Two people can present with the same back ache or migraine symptoms, but have a completely different story to tell about when it started, how intense it is, where they feel it most and what triggers or relieves it. So, unlike a simple relaxation massage, a remedial treatment will always be different, because everybody's story is unique.

That's why as a therapist it's such a pleasure, and a constant learning experience, and it's why the client or patient will often say to me: "Wow, I've never had a massage like that before," especially if it's their first ever real Remedial treatment.

After five years working in Australia as a remedial massage therapist, Simon Duffin has relocated to Perth in Scotland and is now working out of South Inch Osteopath Clinic in Marshall Place, Perth. He is offering remedial massage, reflexology or Indian Head Massage on Tuesday mornings and Thursday all day until 5.30pm. Simon will be posting regularly on this page, sharing his experience of the different types of people he has treated with remedial massage in the past, from plumbers to police officers, from football players to gymnasts, as well as some of the conditions which have responded well to remedial massage, from migraines to muscle tears, and poor posture to soft tissue pain. Remedial massage works as a stand-alone treatment or in conjunction with other health care providers.
