Sweet violets (Viola odorata) flourishing amongst the tree roots.
One of the earliest to return, low to the ground and perhaps easy to miss unless you’re looking for them, Viola odorata is the only scented violet native to the UK.
Legend tells that you may only smell sweet violets once because they 'steal' your sense of smell. Theres actually a little truth to this, as sweet violets contain beta-ionone, a chemical that overwhelms and temporarily shuts off our smell receptors.
The aroma of Sweet violet flowers has been valued through history, and very locally to us in Devon, they supported a whole perfume industry around 100 years ago.
After the stillness of winter, these little aromatic pops of colour feel very welcome.
