We have now had our bra bank within our reception at Heritage Funerals for over a year and have been amazed with the amount of support from local families with their donations.

We would like to continue to encourage everyone to keep donating and therefore ask that if you have any unwanted bras pop them in the bra bank at our premises in Katherine Drive, Dunstable.

Against Breast Cancer has a recycling scheme which takes your unwanted or unloved bras and through their network of bra banks raises vital funds for pioneering breast cancer research.

Together with their recycling partners, their textile recovery project prevents these bras going into landfill before giving them a new lease of life.

For every tonne of bras collected, Against Breast Cancer receives £700 to fund their research. With over 30 million women in the UK you could really help make a difference!

We look forward to many more donations throughout 2025.

Cathy Brokenshire has surprised herself since her husband – the Rt Hon James Brokenshire MP – died in October 2021 at the age of 53. A lifelong non-smoker, his lung cancer diagnosis came as a huge shock to him, his family, his friends and colleagues.

What is Direct Cremation?

There is a lot of confusion around the term direct cremation.

Many people believe this to be a new innovation when in fact, direct cremation has existed from the earliest days of a modern form of cremation being introduced to the United Kingdom in the early 20th century.

There are a number of reasons for the recent increase in the visibility of the option and sadly the main driver was the restrictions imposed by Covid-19. We can be fairly sure that during that period of time a great many of us missed the opportunity to gather with family and friends to celebrate the life of someone no longer with us.

There may also be financial reasons for choosing a Direct Cremation or as it can otherwise been known as an Unattended Funeral, particularly at a time when many are struggling with the cost of living.

However, we are still coming to understand the effects of that loss of family, friends and community support through a number of bereavement studies underway. What we do know from the families we serve is that the part of a funeral service most missed was the same for all families across the world, irrespective of culture or creed:those precious hours together before we say goodbye.

Another reason we’re perhaps more aware of Direct Cremations is the increase in venture capital companies investing in high profile providers. It feels as if every second TV advert is by another new startup offering no frills Direct Cremations.

Families don’t necessarily save money with such providers and it’s often the case that their loved one will be transported across the country to a remote crematorium. This makes it incredibly difficult to spend time with your loved one, or arrange a service if you did change your mind.

Sadly, there seems to be a misunderstanding that the choice of a Direct Cremation is the beginning and the end of a funeral, this is not the case.

Whilst many of the high profile funeral providers may limit their services when it comes to a Direct Cremation, we, Heritage Funerals a family owned funeral directors extend the same options and quality of service as you would expect with a traditional cremation service or burial.

If you wish to have a ceremony, viewing, a particular choice of coffin or any other element of a traditional funeral, all you have to do is let us know. An unattended cremation is simply an option for the final part of the funeral.

To find out more about options for planning a funeral please feel free to contact us anytime as we are always here to answer any questions you might have.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People really do change peoples lives and we Heritage Funerals Ltd have been proud to sponsor pups over the last few years and will continue to do so in the years to come.

We are currently sponsoring Toby, the snoring softy...

When Toby went to live with his Volunteer Puppy Trainer Nicky, he was up with the birds! She tells us: “He soon settled in but did like to wake to the dawn chorus which got us up ‘nice and early’ for quite a while.” And now? “We get to ‘sleep in’ until he wakes up – at 6am.”

So if Toby is an early riser, then maybe that’s why he spends the rest of the day sleeping?

Back to Nicky: “Toby sleeps in my husband’s home office most days. He’s participated in many videoconferences with his snoring, which is the loudest I’ve ever heard.”

Apart from the office, where does he like to sleep? “Wherever the fancy takes him, really. He loves to snooze in the sun. He particularly likes doorways for some reason. But he does make a point of climbing into his bed properly for his afternoon nap.”

When he’s awake however, Toby loves company. “Toby's best friend is our six-year-old granddaughter. They are often to be found at the end of the garden in the Wendy house, with her making him pretend tea.” Puppies and granddaughters – what a cute combination!

So everything’s rosy in Toby’s garden, except for the ducks. Oh, those pesky ducks. Nicky laughs: “Toby isn’t a fan of ducks, which we often get in our garden. He obviously thinks they’re in his territory!”

Clearly, the garden is Toby’s now. So are the many sleeping places, not to mention the office. Wherever he lays his head, that’s his home!

Nicky is so proud of little Toby. “He has such a lovely gentle nature. He waits for his dinner and treats like a good little boy.” All this, for one so young! And how would Nicky sum him up? “He really is a joy.”

If you sponsor a hearing dog puppy from £5 a month, you'll get lots of fab updates of your puppy as they grow into a life-changing hearing dog for a deaf person.

When a loved one dies, it can seem impossible to think past what the next few days hold. It's important to remember that there is no timeline for grief and no forewarning on how you may feel day to day.
In many cases, it is the best option to seek professional guidance when it comes to handling your loved ones affairs, taking the difficulties away so you can focus on what matters most.
