I hope you and your dogs are all well. We have been blessed with some beautiful weather which I hope has helped to keep spirits high, and you have been able to get out with your dogs.
To keep myself out of mischief apart from a bit of gardening and general sorting of cupboards and sheds I have been keeping up with my studying. Due to the current climate I’ve been increasing my understanding of the effects of EMF (Electromagnetic Frequency) on health. I wrote about this a couple of years ago and it’s in my holistic canine health presentation although the 5 minutes given does not do it justice. I stumbled across this documentary, Resonance: Beings of Frequency, which very interestingly explains the natural frequency that the earth and our bodies (and our animals) are beautifully attuned to and how it supports our health, mental and physical, aiding our immune system, synchronising circadian rhythms (how many people do you now know with sleep issues?? ). Our whole body operates by electromagnetic communication between the cells. We are just at the beginning of understanding it.
Technology is moving fast, and you cannot deny its value in this modern world, but I do wonder at what cost. Can our bodies adapt to the changes in our environment? Independent studies have shown the negative effects of mobile phone use as one example, but we need more studies to be carried out to really understand the impact this is having, and will only get worse as the industrial EMF network grows. This documentary demonstrates with both visual and audible explanations and also how the ‘safe’ standards are set not by an independent authority but by the industry itself. It is a long documentary, about 1 ½ hours, but well worth the watch if you want to do more to support your own health and that of your dog.
We already do a few things to minimise exposure for ourselves and our dogs, but we will certainly be doing more. If everyone took steps this could only be a good thing.

So as promised I said I would add ideas to my page to help you and your dog. There are many ways currently being promoted on social media to train and exercise your dog but I believe this method is unique (patent now pending) as this one goes further in that it helps you too!!

How to combine DIY tasks whilst entertaining your dog:

Duration: This is highly variable depending on what task you choose to complete, your dog’s level of training and your level of patience. As a general guide allow a minimum of twice as long as the task would normally take!

1. Firstly isolate the task using puppy fencing or similar. I’ve chosen an outdoor seat that needs staining for this example.

2. Accidently leave a gap for your dog to soon work out he can place his ball in the enclosure. Those of you familiar with shaping will understand how this encourages your dog to make a choices in order to gain a reward.

3. Once you dog has presented you with his ball, you need to stop painting briefly and request a previously trained behaviour (below you will see we have used, go round, twist, twirl, and hand target!!

4. Vary the behaviours, and the time it takes you to respond to your dog’s requests for you to participate. This helps to avoid anticipation, and full on attention seeking. It also allows you to actually complete the task you set out to do!

As well as entertaining your dog this task is beneficial to you. By multi-tasking you are improving hand eye coordination, proprioception, cognitive stimulation, brain cell health whilst minimising neuroplasticity 🤔 (I made that up but sounds good).

Next week I will show you how to entertain 2 dogs at the same time, see example below, and week 3, show you how to teach your dog to do the DIY chores while you enjoy your favourite beverage!!🍷🍹🍸

While things are going to be a bit different for a while I thought I would share 5 Things we are doing to avoid the C word!!

1. Following Government Guidelines
Particularly social distancing, increased hygiene and protecting/supporting the vulnerable. Whatever you think of the current situation if we don’t comply this will continue and it will take longer to return to normal.

Vets are classed as key workers but are working on an emergency service only, but check with your own vets for their guidelines.

2. Social Media
Although social media can offer a source of distraction it can also add to anxiety with some very mixed sources of information. Use it wisely. Limit time on the internet (I know sorry I won’t keep you long!!) and avoid just before bed time (I include watching the news in this, especially if you are struggling with sleep). Use it to connect with friends and family. Check sources of information shared (just because something says a doctor said it doesn’t mean it’s true). Personally I am social distancing from some groups and people who continue to bad mouth anyone or share negative posts, it’s just my way of dealing with this.

3. Meditation
Meditation doesn’t have to be sitting crossed legged, emptying the mind, and concentrating on breathing, although working with the breath is very beneficial. This can be done whilst sipping tea, watching the world go by from the window, watching the birds for example. Or sitting quite with your dog lightly stroking them if they are happy with that, or just sitting still with them. If they are settled, tuning your breath to theirs can be a lovely way to connect and relax. If they are anxious then using your breath you can help them to relax. Early morning and evening are good times to practice this, starting and ending the day on a peaceful note.

4. Take this time to enjoy and learn with your dog
but don’t overdo training. Make walks as much for your dog as you by allowing them time to do what dogs do, sniffing etc. Leave the phone at home or use it just to capture lovely memories while you walk. I’ll be sharing games and other things you can do on my page, as well as people you can follow who know much more about this than I do! Obviously greeting other dogs should be avoided at this time. Although there is no evidence to show our dogs catch this (more on this later) there is a very low risk they could carry something back on their coats, if they meet someone (or someone’s dog ) that has the virus in their household. Again more on this later

5. That list of jobs to do!!
I am well practiced at procrastination but the time has come to catch up on a few odd jobs around the home. Some may even be quite satisfying once complete, honest!!

Ok 6 things we are doing:

6. Eating as well as we can
We have always been advocates of eating well, something we enjoy doing and is high on our priority list, including our dogs. Now it is even more important to eat well to support your immune system. As far as I’m aware toilet roll and pasta do not make a nutritious meal, but fresh seasonal vegetables and herbs do. Dig out those cookery books and enjoy good food!!

Ok let’s make it 10 things, but if I’d said that at the beginning you might not have wanted to read this far. I really hope this is helping

7. Keep in touch with family and friends, anyone self -isolating, parents, grandparents, next door neighbours, those on the high risk group, those likely to be worried.
For those having to self- isolate, any independence they had has been taken from them and anxiety could be very high. For me it is even more important now to keep in touch and support them. If your excuse not to pick up the phone was time, what is your excuse now?

8. Support local business where you can
It is going to be hard for everyone but small businesses will suffer. Some are improvising to bring you fresh cooked food, fresh fruit and veg and other groceries as well as beer and wine!! Avoid those who are purposely hiking up prices taking advantage of the current situation. If places are not increasing hygiene and social distancing measures then maybe make a few suggestions, politely!! It could save someone’s life.

9. Learn something new
I will be picking up my studies which sometimes has to take back stage when life is busy. I will also be reading more. To be honest 3 weeks won’t be long enough to get through all the material I have to catch up on!!

10. Movement and Exercise
As well as getting out with our dogs we practice Qigong. We have been practicing Qigong for a little while now and have felt significant benefit having both suffered back problems in the past. We have found it supports the Amatsu therapy we both receive (but not needed as often now) it helps to centre the mind and is known to have many health benefits. Our Master is offering free online sessions you are welcome to have a go. It is set up for beginners but if you already practice a good reminder of the moves, techniques and how they benefit you. I hope you are all well. I have sent out an email to most of you who are booked in or come regularly to keep you up to date during this time. If you wish to be kept in the loop or havent received anything please get in touch. I hope to be sharing information here I feel will be helpful to you and your dog. although I cant see your dogs in clinic at the moment, I am happy to discuss any concerns you may have or if you just want to chat. I think it imperitive at this time to communicate and look out for each other. Take care everyone and take this time to enjoy your dogs. Look after you, as this can also impact your dog and their well being, but dogs are also very good at making us smile :)

Some of you might have heard me on about Qigong, a beautiful movement practice that keeps you supple and healthy here’s your chance to sample it. Covid 19 Update

Business As (not so) Usual!

Just so you are aware the clinic will remain open until further notice.

I have put in extra precautions to mitigate contact and spread of the virus. This includes sanitising surfaces, door handles etc. I am also using a safe sanitiser on my hands pre and post treatment of each dog. This will not harm your dog if they were to lick it. I have checked that the measures I am taking follow current guidance from both DEFRA and WSAVA, and I am making myself aware of any updates on a daily basis. A number of other organisations are being followed for further guidance.

I am able to work remotely in most cases. This means your dog can be collected from you at your car. I will be wiping down leads with sanitiser, this shouldn’t affect them but use an old one if you are concerned. You are welcome to wait in your car. I suggest a flask of tea while you wait or if you prefer to go for a walk (I know a bit odd without your dog, maybe I can lend you one of mine!!). We live in a lovely quiet area so a nice way to clear your mind.

If you have a dog that would not be happy to be left with me, please get in touch as there are other measures we can discuss, to assure you.

Payment can be arranged by bank transfer if you prefer not to handle cash at this time.

I would ask you to contact me if you have any concerns or are unwell, in any way please get in touch, we can always rearrange as necessary.

We are pretty much isolated. We are asking visitors to our home to wash hands regularly and use the hand sanitisers provided or their own.

We are doing what we can to keep you, your dog and ourselves safe whilst still providing a much needed service for as long as we can.

All this said, I totally understand if you wish to cancel your appointment and would appreciate as much notice as possible, as some may want to bring appointments forward.

A huge shout out to Holly Bol Barker for your seminar today!! Loved it and feedback is just fantastic. I knew I would enjoy it and wasn’t disappointed with your relaxed but informative logical approach to dog feeding ( which we can apply to ourselves too). Thank you to all who attended, a fantastic friendly bunch and so proud of you all as no one nicked the toilet rolls 🤣 which means we will be welcome to do it all again 😍 thank you to Cathy Shaw for the fabulous cakes. I don’t think anyone could say they didn’t learn something and no one felt bad about what they do but learned they could do better. One of the things that also stood out was Holly’s understanding of our dog’s emotional needs 💜 Highly recommend if you get chance to attend one of Holly’s talks, fun, interactive (no pressure) informative. Thank you 🙏 x x

Sometimes there is just no ‘fixing’ some conditions but we can certainly manage them better! I am so pleased with Bertie’s response to the sessions. Since last time he has better bowel control and no sudden cries of pain. He still has legs that aren’t always under his full control and is actually better for movement. Enjoying his walks, his food and daddy cuddles, the boy is doing good. Thank you for the hugs and kisses Bert 💕
