Durham Yoga Group

Durham Yoga Group The Durham Yoga Group meets once a month to run a workshop for anyone practicing Yoga in the Durham area. The group is non profit making.

We invite along teachers from around the region and aim to give those who attend a new experience of Yoga that they might not get in a weekly class. Durham Yoga Group is run by four local Yoga teachers (Jacqueline Stevenson, Noel Sharpe, Judith Gibbons and Leigh Johnson) who organise the regular meetings and source the teachers. The topics are decided by the teachers themselves and are varied and often surprising! All of those taking the sessions are qualified teachers. Once a year we run a free session for members and make a donation to a local charity.

It was great to see such a well-attended first session of 2026 for DYG. Our teacher this week was Tracy McPhail, joining us from Stockton. Tracy started the session by encouraging us to set our San Kalpa (heartfelt intention) for the year. We held a ‘Treasure Chest’ mudra whilst reflecting on our intention for our mind, body and soul. After this intention setting, we practised some strengthening yoga sequences including down dog, high lunges and sphinx. We then stretched it out with pigeon pose. A short meditation followed as we listened to a reading of When I say Happy New Year by Donna Ashworth. This reminded us that we can expect to feel a range of emotions throughout the year, hoping of course that the majority are pleasant! The final part of the session saw us gather closer to Tracy to enjoy the nourishing vibrations of a sound bath. I’m sure I’m not the only one who drifted off and resurfaced feeling calmer and more centred. Thanks Tracy for this intention-setting practice; it was a fabulous way to kick off our schedule for the year!

Happy New Year to all our lovely participants, we hope you have had a restful and rejuvenating break, and are looking forward to joining us again in 2026.

Our next session is on Saturday 17th January with Tracy McPhail, we hope you can make it 🙏

Tracy's journey began many years ago when she first started to go to Yoga classes with friends as a way of keeping fit and flexible. She found she not only benefitted from the physical practice, but the mental and spiritual side too.

Practising pranayama, mantra and meditation enabled her to develop an inner awareness and release any stress or tension in both her body and mind. This led her to completing a 250 hour Yoga Teacher Training course accredited by Yoga Alliance, as she wanted to delve deeper into this practice. This course specialised in Ayurvedic Yoga and the Healing Arts and she also completed her Reiki Level One within this training.

Tracy enjoys teaching Vinyasa Yoga and has undertaken additional training to specialise in teaching Yin Yoga and Chair Yoga too. She has completed further training in Sound Healing and Sound Therapy and also completed a Reiki Level Two training, allowing her to offer Reiki treatments at the Wellbeing Centre at Middleton Hall in Middleton St George.

Tracy teach weekly Yoga classes and host Yoga Retreats and Sound Baths across Teesside and North Yorkshire.

Yoga has revealed itself to be so much more than a physical practice and she look forward to sharing the benefits of Yoga with you.

This months class will be.

“Intentional Beginnings’:

Intention: To plant a conscious intention for the rest of the year - clarify values and align movement with purpose.

Focus: Slow Vinyasa flow with pause points for breath and reflection: flowing with intention to release tension and invite clarity. Involving heart-opening sequences, longer holds to help release stored stress in hamstrings/hips and mini-meditations between flows.

Closing: Sound Bath - immersing yourself in the soothing tones of a variety of instruments to help you turn inwards, clarify what you want and hold that intention without distraction.

✨ A Huge Thank You ✨
A heartfelt thank you to Samantha Lavery of Simply Love Yoga for delivering such a wonderful seasonal Christmas yoga session. Samantha was joined by 29 festive yogis, who were gently guided through a beautifully calming and restorative experience.

The session began with breath awareness, followed by an autumnal qigong practice honouring the Metal element, before settling into stillness through our yoga asanas. This flowed into a deeply relaxing Savasana, followed by a balancing moving meditation to gently reawaken the body.

We then paused to enjoy light refreshments. Thank you to everyone who baked or donated nibbles. We then returned to the mat to finish with a soothing qigong organ-polishing relaxation and sound bath — a perfect close to a truly special session.

This donation-based event raised funds for St Cuthbert’s Hospice, and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed so generously 💛

🧘‍♀️ Our next session takes place on Saturday 17th January 2026 — we look forward to seeing you all there.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from everyone at Durham Yoga Group 🎄✨

Durham Yoga Group warmly invites you to a Seasonal Yoga Session with Samantha Lavery

Date: Saturday 13th December 2025
Time: 10am – 1pm with light refreshments mid way.
Location: Belmont Parish Hall.

🍂 About the Practice
In this Seasonal Yoga and Qigong session, Samantha will guide participants in aligning with the rhythm of Autumn, associated with the Metal element in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

This is the Yin phase of the year—a time to slow down, turn inward, and connect deeply with the breath.

The practice will include:
• Breathing techniques to balance and cleanse the energy of the Lungs and Large Intestine — organs linked to the Metal element.
• Slow, flowing movements and postures designed to open and close the upper body, stimulating lung energy and supporting detoxification.
• Long, mindful exhales to encourage physical, mental, and emotional release.
• A meditation focused on letting go of what no longer serves and cultivating calm and clarity.
• A final relaxation in the form of a Yoga Nidra or Sound Bath.

This session offers an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, release tension, and find nourishment within stillness.

🧘 What You’ll Need
• A yoga block or folded blanket for seated positions
• A yoga brick
• A blanket for relaxation at the end

🍂 Living in Tune with Autumn
Autumn’s energy invites reflection—a chance to pause, breathe, and consider what truly matters. Just as trees shed their leaves to make space for new growth, we too can let go of what we no longer need—habits, emotions, or clutter that weighs us down.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lungs represent our connection to the world through breath. Conscious breathing can transform our emotional state—sighing when tired, quickening the breath when anxious, slowing it when seeking calm for the body and mind.
The Metal element symbolizes strength and clarity—mountains, stones, crystals, and the minerals that support the body such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. By embracing this seasonal energy, we nurture inner resilience while finding peace in simplicity.

Samantha Lavery is a certified 500-hour Seasonal Yoga and Qigong teacher. Her yoga journey began in Sumatra in 2012, when she turned to yoga after stepping away from running in the tropical heat. What began as a physical practice soon grew into something much deeper—a way for her to find calm, balance, and inner connection.
Since training with the Seasonal Yoga Academy in 2016, Samantha has completed advanced certifications in Seasonal Yoga, Seasonal Yin, and over 150 hours of additional Qigong training. She is also certified to teach Aerial Yoga. Her approach weaves together Yoga, Qigong, and Meditation to support both physical vitality and emotional well-being.
Her classes are centred around creating space for connection and community, where participants can move, breathe, and support one another both on and beyond the mat

22 yogis gathered on this cold and blustery November morning to be guided through a beautiful Dru Yoga session with Mandy.

We began with calming, grounding breathwork, followed by a thoughtful Energy Block Release sequence. From there, we flowed into gentle stretches and postures, before being gracefully led through The Seat of Compassion and the Earth Sequence.

We closed our practice by relaxing into stillness with a soothing guided relaxation.

A huge thank you to Mandy for leading her first session with us — 120 minutes of absolute bliss to carry with us for as long as possible.

Our next DYG 2 hour workshop at Belmont Parish Hall will be on Saturday 15th November, 10am to midday, with the lovely Dru Yoga Teacher Mandy Smith.

Mandy first discovered yoga through DVDs and YouTube to improve her balance and soon found it eased her back pain and asthma too. After discovering Dru Yoga through the Durham Yoga Group, she was instantly hooked and went on to train as a Dru Yoga teacher. With a long background in teaching swimming, aerobics, as well as teaching in secondary and 6th form, she brings warmth and experience to her Dru Yoga classes. She’s also qualified in chair yoga and enjoys making yoga accessible to everyone.

In this session we’ll explore Seat of Compassion, a Dru Yoga sequence that opens the heart centre, or Anahata Chakra. It encourages kindness, emotional balance, and a deeper connection with ourselves and others. The sequence works by gently awakening energy in the lower body and guiding it upward to the heart, helping us feel calmer, more open, and a little lighter inside. Physically, it’s a lovely stretch for the spine, front of the hips, and thighs. The practice is also about softening that inner voice and finding a gentler way to be with ourselves because that’s where compassion truly starts.

Look forward to seeing you all in November 🙏

Live this morning, all the way from beautiful Shillbottle, the Durham Yoga Group had the joy of welcoming the lovely Lucy Maresh, who guided us through a gentle and thoughtful practice.
We began by grounding and settling into the space, before flowing into Cat—and for those who felt called—an optional Dog. As always, everything was offered by invitation only, with kindness and care.
Lucy then shared a simple, nourishing variation of Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutations), gently building the flow over several rounds. Together, in a supportive circle, we explored ferocious yet kind Warriors, and returned to the rhythm of the breath with a few more sun salutations.
We closed with a beautiful, restful Yoga Nidra—leaving us feeling deeply connected, calm, and whole.
Thank you, Lucy, for travelling all that way to share your practice and presence with us. 🙏✨

We are looking forward to seeing you all for our next session on Saturday 18th October 2025, 10am to Midday at Belmont Parish Hall.

Our teacher for this session is Lucy Maresh

Moving Into Stillness with Lucy Maresh
We all know how important it is to keep moving, and to move well, but the real power of yoga is revealed in the art of stillness.
During the first half of this session we will explore a slow and meditative approach to surya namaskar, along with some common standing postures. The second half of the session will include a long relaxation with breathwork and meditation.
Please bring a blanket and cushion along with your mat. You may also wish to bring a block and bolster if you have them and an eye pillow, mask or scarf for covering the eyes in relaxation (optional).

Lucy is the owner of A Space to Be Yoga Retreat in Northumberland, where she lives and works with her husband and two children. Her practice is anchored in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and the late teachings of Sri T Krishnamacharya. This approach emphasises movement synchronised with breath and an individualised, therapeutic practice.
Lucy started her yoga journey in 1998 and completed the BWY diploma in 2010 with her formative teacher Tara Fraser. Since then, she has studied intensively with Uma Dinsmore Tuli, Judith Hanson Lasater and Ranju Roy.
Inspired by the natural world and the changing seasons around us, Lucy’s practice invites us to embrace the ebbs, flows, and changes within us. Her teaching may challenge you in ways you are not expecting. She hopes to guide you home to your felt sense of what’s right and true, and your passion for a purposeful and intentional life.

🌧️✨ A huge thank you to Helen for leading our monthly Durham Yoga Group workshop!
It may have been rainy outside, but Helen’s smile brought such a welcoming light into the room. She gently stretched us on the floor before guiding us through a thoughtful seasonal transition — flowing sun salutations into moon salutations, helping us move gracefully from summer into autumn.
We all left feeling grounded, uplifted, and ready for the shift in seasons. 🍂🧘‍♀️
Thank you, Helen! 💛
