The refurbishment at Proctor House is finally finished. Bitter sweet as Sheila Kelly and my mum - David Florence Rayson - weren't able to see it completed but I'm sure they are looking down on us and smiling. A big thank you to Judith and Ian Hutching for design and making our bispoke star sign gates and panels to represent all our residents and staff - past and present, (sorry they stained your back yard), to David Simm and Dale for all the building and carpententy and to Harriet Thomson for our beautiful fairy garden. Now our residents can enjoy the outside space after so many years in the making. !

The scariest part of dementia isn’t always memory loss—it’s losing the sense of being needed."
When someone we love is diagnosed, our first instinct is to protect them. We say, "Don’t worry about the cooking," or "I’ll handle the bills." We mean well, but "subtracting" these roles can make them feel pushed out of their own lives.
The most powerful shift we can make is Substitution instead of Subtraction.
When a task becomes too difficult, don’t just take it away. Find a way they can still contribute: If cooking is unsafe , ask them to wash the vegetables or set the table.
If money is too complex, let them sort coins or organize receipts.
If they can’t drive, ask them to be the "navigator" and help plan the route.
If they can’t clean, ask them to fold the towels or pair the socks.
The goal isn’t perfection; it’s purpose.
People living with dementia still need to feel useful, respected, and involved. When we focus on what they can do, we reduce the anxiety and withdrawal that comes from feeling sidelined.
Dementia changes abilities, but it never erases the human need for meaning. Let’s keep them at the heart of their own story.
Be kind.

Dementia-friendly decor. A great amount of evidence is now emerging to support those who are living with dementia. We are constantly trying to encompass these principles within our care home, e.g. using warm paint colours in rooms (reds, yellows, oranges, lime), camouflaging areas/doors that you'd prefer people not to access / use, and using vivid colors to highlight things, e.g., deep-coloured table coverings to contrast crockery and cutlery. The use of red items, e.g., cups, mobility frames, grab rails, etc., to promote their use. Plain, consistent flooring can also facilitate mobility. Patterned items can be problematic on floors and surfaces as individuals often see them as something that needs to be picked up and black flooring often appears to them as a hole in the floor. Many of the principles we are adopting at Crosshill Nursing Home can also be used in individuals' own homes and in the community too. It is certainly worth adopting these environmental principles as it has been found to reduce anxiety, behaviours that challange and slip trips and falls.
