Mental health is more than a small part of our lives – it’s every moment of every day. It’s a hard day’s work and a catch-up with friends. It’s when you become a parent and the day you lose someone you love. It’s the times you reach out for support and the years you spend on a waiting list. It’s the fight for a mental health system that works and hospitals that are safe.

Mental health matters on the days when everything happens and the days when nothing happens. When life is busy and unpredictable and when it’s quiet and ordinary too. That’s why we fight every day, to support more people tomorrow.

10th October is World Mental Health Day, but we want everyone to understand that mental health is important every day. Together we can make sure everyone sees it that way.

Macmillan Cancer Support support people living with cancer in the UK, but they can’t do it without you. So they're asking you to get involved in Sober October by going alcohol-free for the month of October, to raise money for people with cancer. Every penny raised will play a vital role in helping Macmillan Cancer Support fund critical services.

Sober October is an 18+ fundraising campaign aimed at challenging social drinkers to change their habits for a month and make some healthy lifestyle changes. We would encourage people to drink responsibly and stick to the recommended daily guidelines for the rest of the year. We advise heavy drinkers or people dependent on alcohol to speak with their GP before signing up to Sober October.

You can sign up for the challenge here - https://www.gosober.org.uk/users/sign_up

One in five people will die early from cardiovascular disease (CVD), which claims more lives than cancer and chronic respiratory diseases combined. Yet, up to 80% of heart disease and stroke cases are preventable.

That’s why, every 29th September, World Heart Day raises awareness of CVD and the importance of taking care of your heart. From individuals, families and schools to community groups and governments, the World Heart Federation works to make equitable heart health a priority and drive change across the globe.

To learn more about cardiovascular disease, please see here - https://world-heart-federation.org/world-heart-day/understanding-cvd/

Migraine Awareness Week is run by The Migraine Trust, and aims to increase awareness and understanding of migraine, promote research into the condition, and campaign for national policy change to improve the lives of people who get it.

One in seven people in the UK live with migraine, and this complex and debilitating neurological disorder significantly affects their lives.

A migraine tends to be a very bad headache with a throbbing pain on 1 side of the head.

Migraines usually last between 2 hours and 3 days, with some symptoms (such as feeling very tired) starting up to 2 days before the head pain starts and finishing after the headache stops.

Some people have migraines several times a week, while others do not have them very often.

The Migraine Trust website has a wealth of resources and information about living with migraine, including tips on self-management and where to access support. You can find out more here - https://migrainetrust.org/live-with-migraine/

Mental health concerns for young people have multiplied in recent times. Today, 1 in 5, 8-25-year-olds have a diagnosable mental health disorder. Yet, only 40% are able to access effective treatment.

Though times continue to be difficult, Youth Mental Health Day 2025 (YMHD 2025) is here to provide hope and positivity. By getting young people engaged in discussions and activities about how to improve their mental health, YMHD aims to give young people a voice and agency to take steps towards their own and their peers’ positive mental health.

stem4, the UK’s leading digital mental health charity for young people, is proud to be the founder of Youth Mental Health Day, which started in 2020.

This year’s theme, Share Support, encourages young people and those around them to connect, share, and access clinically-informed mental health resources.

Peer support plays a crucial role in young people’s mental health, offering a sense of connection, understanding, and shared experience that can reduce feelings of isolation. When young people share their own coping strategies and recommendations, it not only empowers them but also provides others with relatable, practical tools to navigate their challenges.

stem4 have a selection of apps which can make support more accessible and tailored to individual needs - https://stem4.org.uk/apps/

Right now, 5 million UK adults aged 18-64 may have undiagnosed high blood pressure – increasing their risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Many don’t even know it. That’s why getting a simple blood pressure check at home could literally be a lifesaver.

High blood pressure is known as the “silent killer” – no symptoms, just risk. But knowing your numbers gives you the power to act – whether that’s eating less salt, being more active, or starting medication if needed. Age doesn’t matter. Everyone should Know Their Numbers!

May Lane GP Surgery

May Lane Surgery is a purpose built GP surgery, completed in 1999, that won a civic trust award for its innovative design and use of natural light. It houses two GP practices, Acorn and Walnut, who work closely together but remain separate as they both value the continuity of care small practices can offer patients. We work in partnership to ensure excellent healthcare for all our patients and have a particular interest in promoting health and wellbeing through social prescribing projects.

On our premises we have an independent pharmacy and we maintain close links with community nurses and health visitors. We believe that all patients should be able to source high quality medical care easily and promote good self-care in our patients.

Our latest CQC inspections have given us either good or outstanding assessments and we value our relationship with our Patient Participation Group, who help us to innovate and bring improvements to the care we provide.
