Meet John, he is our new nutritionist at Courtyard Clinic!

Qualifications:
MSc (1st) Nutrition & Food Science, AfN Registered Nutritionist and Certified Nutrigenomics Practitioner
Specialist Fields: Genetic nutrition, Type 2 diabetes, Microbiome Health
Food is the single most malleable factor we can use to influence both the quality and quantity of our lives. I am fascinated by harnessing the power on our plates to heal and protect, to influence how we feel and to fundamentally shape the future of our health.

In a previous life I managed an NHS dental practice where the link between poor diet and health first became apparent. Amazed by just how many medications patients of all ages were merrily consuming just to counter the symptoms of chronic disease, made me question why and ask what could be done about it.

Curiosity, combined with a passion for food, flavour and fitness inspired me to study nutrition where I was fortunate enough to learn from world leading experts about the microbiome, healthy ageing and genetic nutrition. I have since completed a nutrigenomics course which allows me deeper insights into personalised nutrition by tailoring dietary advice to the language of our own unique genetic code.

I am also a certified health coach with Momenta Newcastle and work as part of their type 2 diabetes team using behaviour change techniques as part of a structured NHS program to modify lifestyle and diet that successfully allows patients to reverse their condition.

My approach is scientific, evidence-based yet simple. I encourage a diverse, plant-rich diet to feed the microbiome and an abundance of nutrient dense food to fuel metabolism. Once working in harmony these systems restore the balance upon which we all can thrive.

I promote positive nutrition that does not involve dieting, restrictive eating or rigid meal plans. Instead, I focus on making the healthy option, the simplest and most delicious option and consider nutrition holistically in the context of lifestyle, movement, stress and sleep. Exploring an individual’s variations in genetics, preference, experience and circumstance, enables me to offer more effective advice which is both targeted and personalised.

Being a nutritionist quenches my thirst for learning and allows me to follow the ever-evolving landscape of nutrition research whilst constantly discovering more about individual stories and human nature. I love meeting people, enjoy listening and feel incredibly privileged to accompany them on their health journey where small nudges can, over time, yield amazing results.

When I’m not talking about nutrition, learning about nutrition, or eating nutritious food, I am often found cycling. A lot. I often compete in ultra-distance cycling events which is my mindfulness, my fitness and the space in which I find time to think. Often about nutrition!

Introducing….. Martin Underwood

Too much sport, too much stress, too many hours at a desk.
That’s how my pain started - playing semi-pro rugby, working long days as a barrister, and then pushing hard in fast-paced start-ups. I ended up with constant pain in my back, neck, and shoulders.
I tried everything but nothing worked. And I didn’t want to just manage the pain.
Then came the Alexander Technique. In my very first session, the pain lifted - suddenly, mysteriously. Later, I found a teacher whose simple, direct approach helped me sustain this in daily life.
I felt more time, space and ease - and a lot less pain. This led me to train, and I love sharing this with others.
I’ve kept learning and adding tools like mindfulness, breathwork, hypnosis, and pain coaching – all grounded in the neuroscience of pain that brings together posture, movement, and the emotional and psychological roots of pain.
I’ve also worked as a head of HR and a career coach, so I know how pain affects work and life. I help people recover, return to work, and deal with stress in a more sustainable way.
Qualifications
• 3-year full-time MSTAT Alexander Technique training
• LET Trainer – Live Well With Pain programme
• Certified Coach & Careers Adviser

Keep your eyes peeled to see when Martin will be starting in clinic

Weyward Sisters series 2 is coming!
Our Weyward Sisters series has begun and I’m still buzzing after the first Warrioress workshop. We moved to magnificent tunes, explored the power and presence of the Warrioress through guided meditations, laughed, danced and shouted with a lack of inhibition that surprised (and delighted) every one of us.
There were still moments too. Through our own stories and those of mythical and historical characters, we remembered parts of ourselves we’d quietly tucked away. The flowers and even the snacks were on theme. Think posh beans on toast, a humble dish reborn with Warrioress flair. Thank you Under The Edge Flowers and John Barnes Nutrition
I couldn’t have wished for a more open-minded and generous group to start this project with; here’s what some of the incredible women had to say:
“The first warrior workshop was awesome. A wonderful mixture of women, all ages and backgrounds, beautiful gentle and strong movement, music and stories. Jo held the space with a sense of playfulness, care and inclusivity, which really helped me to be myself. The thought-provoking insights made me reflect on the warrior aspect of myself, and the balance of that with other parts of my life—reflections I'm still pondering a week later.”
“I wanted to say how much I loved the workshop. As someone who struggles to get out of my comfort zone, it was a really good mixture of activities and a lovely group of people. Your energy and enthusiasm was infectious.”
“I SO enjoyed the first workshop. It was fun, interesting and inspiring and I look forward to coming to the others.”
“Thank you so much for running this session. I really enjoyed learning new techniques. It was thought-provoking in a safe environment, and I had a lot of fun.”
The mood will change as we meet The Lover, The Queen, and The Sorceress in future workshops. I’m thrilled that this wonderful group of women will continue together and deepen their connections as the year unfolds.
…And a Second Series Is Coming!
Due to popular demand, I’m opening up a second series of Weyward Sisters for a new circle of bold and curious women ready to rediscover their archetypal power through story, movement, music, and a little magic.
📅 Dates for Series 2:

Weyward Sisters - with Jo Turner

An experience, not just an exercise class.

After nearly 30 years of teaching movement and body awareness under the name of Pilates, I’m bringing together some of the parts I secretly love most in a series of four, very special workshops for women.

Weyward Sisters is a new offering. A class where movement meets music, where stretching and strength intertwine with storytelling, and where the seasons, the elements, and a bit of magic shape the way we move.

This is not a medical service (although there is plenty of evidence for the physical and mental health benefits of movement, meditation and a sense of community within a group) and it won’t be for everyone. I’ll still be teaching my regular Pilates classes, this is something a little bit different for those who love the sound of it.

Think of these workshops as a spellbinding blend. Yes, you’ll move. Yes, you’ll stretch. But you’ll also breathe in rhythm with incredible music, sink into meditations, and tap into something deeper - those forgotten, powerful parts of yourself that rarely get a look-in amidst the work emails, the laundry, and remembering everyone’s birthdays.

Over the past five years, in my work as a One Of many Women’s Coach, I’ve worked with female archetypes - a way of exploring different aspects of yourself beyond ‘the responsible one’, ‘the kind one’, or ‘the one who sorts out the drama.’ In Weyward Sisters, we’ll welcome back those hidden parts, discovering layers of strength, grace, and maybe a some wildness along the way.

What to Expect

• A Seasonal Journey: In each of our sessions spread over the year, we’ll explore one of the female archetypes. In spring, we’ll meet your youthful Warrioress. In summer, the captivating Lover. Dignified Queen will enter the stage in autumn, and in the depths of winter, we’ll encounter the wise and crafty Sorceress. Sessions will be influenced by nature’s cycles and the elements of fire, water, air and earth.
• Movement with Meaning: A blend of strength, flexibility, and movement tailored to each archetype, with beautifully curated soundtracks to enhance the mood of each session.
• Guided Meditations: We’ll sink into deep relaxation with guided visualisation exercises to connect with each archetype’s energy and the season.
• Storytelling: Stories and myths will be woven seamlessly and hypnotically throughout the class.
• Community: Although sessions can be purchased individually, my hope is to have a consistent group, so that we can get to know each other over the year.

Some prior Pilates experience is helpful, but we can arrange an assessment and introductory session if not. The main requirements are an open mind, a body that fancies a stretch, and a willingness to embrace something a little different.

For now, this is a women-only class, but if there’s interest, I’d be delighted to conjure up a mixed or men’s group too.

Weyward is a word with it’s roots in old English. In the context of Shakespeare's Macbeth, it refers to the three witches, also known as the "weird sisters" or "weyward sisters," who are figures of fate or destiny. It can also mean to follow one’s inclinations.

If you’re inclination is to join me for this wonderful workshop series, email info@courtyardclinic.com, or call 01453 548119.

Superwoman Maxine has done it!!

A quick message from her..

I completed Brighton Marathon 2025 in 5 hours 19 minutes!

A huge thank you to all of you who sponsored me, put up with me talking about it and moaning about running!

It's been a tough few months getting here with injuries, various bugs from the kids, the weather and general dislike of running but I did it!

Race day was hard going. Firstly, I never realised how hilly Brighton was! The headwind was strong on one of the long outer runs..which happened to be mostly uphill. The sun certainly had its hat on, not a cloud in the sky and very little shade en route! I was very grateful that the organisers had set up mist showers, one chap hosed us all down with his garden hose and various others threw water over us as we went along!

I had a huge smile on my face and a little tear in my eye as I got towards the finish line.. a song we had at Elsie's funeral came on through my headphones and it was the perfect final drive over the finish line.

Thank you all again, from the bottom of my heart.

Maxine xx

Here are a few words from Maxine to explain why she is facing the 26 miles this weekend:

“I'm not normally a runner, I have completed a few 10km races in the past and many years ago (pre children) I also did Stroud Half Marathon. However, last year I set my mind to running a Marathon in 2025 to raise money for SANDS (The Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) in memory of my daughter Elsie who was Stillborn at full term in February 2015. The last 10 years have been an emotional roller coaster and losing Elsie changed me a lot as a person.

Sadly, as a family we are not alone in our loss, 13 babies a day in the UK alone will die shortly before, during or after birth and knowing how much it has affected me, I wanted to fundraise for Sands to help with lowering this number so less families face the same trauma.

A marathon may be a walk in the park for some of our clients but for me it's definitely out of my comfort zone! Normally, you can find me spending my spare time with my husband Russ and 2 sons James and Doug, out on the Bowling Green, walking in the countryside or enjoying a beer or 2 in a pub garden! The training has been tough, trying to avoid injuries, illnesses and the rain and at many times I've wanted to give up!

The nerves have now well and truly set in, last minute panic about whether I'm wearing the right clothing for the weather, if my fuelling plan is correct, trying to stay hydrated etc. I am not trying to break records or set my heart on a time to finish in, to get round and over that finish line will be a huge achievement. It's also got very real now that the bib number has arrived! Number 43385!

Thank you for reading my reasons for “my little jog around Brighton” I'd be grateful for any support and if you wish to sponsor me, here is the link to my fundraising page:

Also a big thank you to my colleagues, pilates classes and clients who have had their ears chewed off about the Marathon over the last few months. Max xx”
