Let’s get Quizzical 🧐

Last night was our final Parade Night of 2024 and that can only mean one thing….it’s time for the Christmas Quiz! 🎄

Cadets and Staff went head-to-head in rounds that tested their knowledge on Disney, Flags, Video Games, Movies and RAFAC in the hopes of earning this year’s bragging rights. After some fierce competition from the teams, it was the Staff who managed to claim victory by just a single point!! The night was then rounded off with the classic Air Cadet tradition of paper plates, each one accompanied by an entertaining anecdote.

Massive thank you to the entire NCO team for all their hard work in putting together and running the night 👏👏 A great opportunity to wind down after a busy 2024 – it’s time for a well-deserved break before hit the ground running in 2025!

Golden Wings! ✈️

Last month, Cadet Warrant Officer Becca Warnock had the exciting opportunity to undertake the newly launched Air Cadet Pilot Scheme (ACPS). The scheme now follows the RAF elementary pilot training syllabus, allowing Cadets to receive the same aviation training as RAF and University Air Squadron (UAS) pilots at AEFs across the UK.

Becca spent three weeks at 2 AEF based at MOD Boscombe Down, learning everything there is to know about the Grob Tutor which is the same aircraft that is used for Cadet AEF flights. Despite the winter weather and after a lot of hard work, we are extremely proud to say that Becca went solo in the Grob, earning her Gold Wings!! 🥳

This makes CWO Warnock the 5th Cadet from to undertake ACPS, however she is one of the first Cadets in Scotland & Northern Ireland Region Royal Air Force Air Cadets to undertake the new course as well as being only one of a handful of Cadets in the entire Royal Air Force Air Cadets to fly solo in a Grob Tutor which is no mean feat. On reflection of the course, CWO Warnock said “The University Air Squadron Pilots were great, it was very interesting learning from people with such a range of military flying experience.”

And let's not forget, she also completed a Gliding Scholarship this year - two scholarships is incredible! Another fantastic experience for a brilliant and dedicated Cadet, huge congratulations Becca!! 👏

Levelling Up 📈

As well as the Scotland and Northern Ireland Region Camp at Barry Buddon, in October were also in attendance at the North Scotland Wing Air Training Corps, RAFAC Skills Camp held at RAF Lossiemouth. Sergeants (then Corporals) Scott and Tough spent the week undertaking a range of courses available within the RAFAC Progressive Training Syllabus.

This included Method of Instruction (MOI) to learn about how to plan and deliver an effective lesson, and Silver Leadership which delves into topics such as delegation and personality types, as well having the opportunity to fire the L144 and L98 and take part in the Wing's first ever Bronze Space course! As a result of their hard work over the week, Sgts Scott and Tough earnt their Bronze Shot, Bronze Space and Silver Leadership badges 👏👏

As it wasn't enough of a busy week, the Camp even had the opportunity to tour II (AC) Squadron and a get a photo with the Typhoons! ✈️ On reflection of the week, Sgt Scott said "The courses greatly benefitted me and I met a lot of new people. Seeing an active Typhoon on a base like that is a once in a lifetime opportunity."

Well done to you both, it's great to see you had a good week!

Speech, Speech, Speech 🗣️

As part of the Dinner and Awards Evening on Friday, we had a few speeches and presentations throughout the night detailing the Squadron’s successes in 2024.

To kick off the evening, Flight Lieutenant Whitford as Officer Commanding reflected on some of the main highlights of the year which included being one of the Runners-Up for the MacRobert Trophy as one of the best performing Squadrons in North Scotland Wing Air Training Corps, RAFAC, continuing to grow our numbers and offer out a wide range of activities and opportunities for our Cadets to enjoy. Mr Graham Guyan, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Aberdeen City also took the time to say some words, reading out a letter from Dr. David Cameron, the Lord Lieutenant which detailed his appreciation of the Cadet Forces and the Squadron, with Cadet Warrant Officer Becca Warnock currently in post as one of his Lord Lieutenant Cadets.

After the fantastic meal courtesy of the Leonardo Hotel and Conference Venue Aberdeen Airport - Formerly Jurys Inn, it was time for the presentations from the Cadets and Staff to hear about what we get up to at the Squadron. Firstly, Corporals Scott and Tough discussed their week at the North Scotland Wing Skills Camp at RAF Lossiemouth, talking about their highlights of meeting Cadets from across the Wing and even a surprise visit to II (AC) Squadron to tour the Typhoons! ✈️ (More on their week soon)

Flying Officer McLachlan went through how we continue to provide a diverse training programme to our Cadets, allowing them to achieve a wide range of the Progressive Training Syllabus. It was also revealed that the Cadets of have achieved 51 badges between them this year! 🤯 Finally, Cadet McDonald did a presentation on what she has done since joining the organisation in January; from Flying at Leuchars, to doing a Camp at Boddam and being part of the Squadron Drill team.

Big thank you to you all for your speeches and presentations 👏 But that’s not all of what we got up to on Friday, watch out for more very soon!

A (Radio) Wave of Success! 🎙️

This weekend, joined Cadets from 107 Aberdeen Squadron - Air Training Corps, 875 (Westhill) Sqn ATC and 2489 (Bridge of Don) Squadron Air Training Corps for a Bronze Radio course held at 107. Corporals Bruce and Johnston and Cadets Qureshi and Wills spent two days building on their knowledge from their Basic Radio (Blue) to learn more advanced procedures over the radio such as relaying, networks and tactical messages.

After lots of hard work practicing and revising, the group then undertook their theory and practical exams which we are happy to say they all passed and have earnt their Bronze Radio badges! 🥳 Well done to the 4 of you for all your hard work this weekend. Big thank you to 107 Squadron for the invite, with a mention to Sergeant Barclay from 107 and our own Sergeant Barclay for being the directing team for the weekend!

Community Connections 🤝

On Wednesday night, welcomed Mr John Taylor from the Royal British Legion Bucksburn Branch. The reason for his visit was to kindly present the Squadron with an incredible donation of £500 as one the organisations that the branch annually donates to.

Over the years, the Squadron has had the honour of parading alongside the Legion during our Remembrance Sunday service in Bucksburn, along with previously attending services at the former Bucksburn Stoneywood Church.

A massive thank you to the Legion for their donation! Their gracious contribution to the unit allows us to continue to provide exciting opportunities and experiences to our Cadets.

Like to be beside the seaside 🌊

Back in April we ran a fundraiser towards our new Squadron flight simulator to give one lucky person a get-away to the stunning beaches of Lossiemouth. Our winner has been in touch and we thought we would share! Joe, Megan and Winston the Dalmatian spent 4 days in Lossiemouth exploring the area and taking in the sunny weather, even if they weren’t able to spot any Typhoons during their trip ✈️

It’s great to see that you all had a fantastic time! A huge thank you to Zoe who donated the caravan as part of the fundraiser along with a thank you to everyone who contributed towards our prize draw. Your donations to the Squadron will go towards helping us provide better experiences for our Cadets at which we couldn’t do without your support.

On the road again 🚌

Schools may have been out for the October Holidays recently but that doesn’t mean that slowed down! 2 members of the Squadron travelled down to Barry Buddon Training Camp to attend the Scotland & Northern Ireland Region Royal Air Force Air Cadets Exercise Bronze/Silver Eagle Camp.

Cadet Michal Jakomulski spent the week advancing through several areas of the Progressive Training Syllabus. This included completing his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition which saw the group exploring the Angus area over 2 days and a night’s camping before finishing at the Dundee Discovery Point, along with undertaking the CyberFirst Adventurer course and working through the Bronze iDEA Award. Now he will focus on finishing his DofE sections and iDEA before seeing some badges as a result of his hard work during the week very soon! 🥳

Sergeant Barclay was also at Barry Buddon as part of the camp’s Staff team, spending the week instructing on Bronze and Silver Radio, Silver Leadership and the Drill Training Course (Instruction).

Big thank you to everyone who made the week possible, we cannot wait to see the Squadron return once again next year!

From the patch to the party 🎃

fully embraced the Halloween spirit last night by participating in a variety of pumpkin-themed tasks. The first challenge of the night was to decorate their pumpkins before having to create an intricate spider’s web strong enough to suspend their new creations about the ground. Finally, each team was tasked to create a story about their pumpkin, having to incorporate a range of Halloween-themed buzzwords - safe to say the stories followed some questionable plot-lines!

A fun night accompanied by some great costumes from both the Cadets and Staff (can anyone guess whose behind the troublesome berries costumes in the background 🧐) Thank you to Cadet Warrant Officer Warnock for organising!
