What is functional exercise and why is it so important?

The things we do often are the things we keep doing.

Getting on and off the floor is a great example of a functional exercise. It makes you do full range of movements and you need good lower limb strength.

Lots of people in their 60s come to clinic and mention they haven’t been able to do that for ages. I ask “how often would you do it?” They would say “never really” so why would you expect to keep doing it.

Remember it’s the things we do often we keep doing.

I would always say with that lifestyle will come pain and inactivity at some point and life won’t last as long as someone who chooses healthy active life style with less selfish view on life. I personally think we can all say wow what a ride just in different experiences.

Back pain can be very debilitating if we let it!!

Getting a diagnosis of a bulging disc can be very worrying and cause us to have significant pain. But understanding that this is just normal and part of the aging process is important.

Not fearing movement and load after having back pain is vital to returning to full function. If we stop moving and loading the back will age quicker and cause more pain and disability.

For years manual handling, health professionals and some gym personal trainers have taught us to protect the back and keep it straight??

Why would you stop moving so many joints and then reduce load which then will reduce surrounding supportive muscles. When we get an injury anywhere else in the body we are told to do the opposite. Keep it moving as able and grade back into loads until full functional loads are achieved.

Movement is medicine. ❤️

Why do we get back pain? It’s just part of life. It happens but it happens strangely when we are stressed or tired we tend to feel back pain a lot more. It’s important to note not all pain is damage pain. Sometimes it’s just sensitive pain. Pain from doing too much. Just like the pain after going to the gym or when you do something for a longer period than usual. For example a prolonged amount of gardening.
