💛 On the Solstice there is much spoken about the return of the light. But that return is very slow, very hesitant, very gradual. We won't even really motice it for a several weeks.

🖤 So as we reach the shortest day, the longest night, perhaps it is a time to investigate what medicine this darkness offers us. Darkness isn't a bad thing - be it seasonal or personal. All new life starts in the dark. The time to rest and dream is where we can pause for long enough to face what we need to face in our lives and in the world, where ideas may begin to take hold, where healing starts to happen.

💛 Not only that, but it is only in the darkness that the beauty of light can be truly appreciated.

🖤 Thank you to all the beautiful people who joined me for the Solstice Series of events. It was such an honour to yoga / sound / nidra / yin with you all!

Enjoy the darkness while it is with us!

With love,
Emma xx

Totally failed to take any photos of our final event in the Solstice Series! So here is Custard - who has been in this exact spot since 6am. She is the Embodiment of Winter Rest. (Well, year round laziness to be honest but...)

Watching night lighten into day as we took sun salutations was a bit wonderful!

Thank you to the dedicated yogis who were up and out in the dark and cold to welcome the return of the light, rest in yoga nidra and take coffee and pastries with excellent conversation.

😍

With love,
Emma xx

First of our Solstice Series: The Midwinter Soundbath.

Such a beautiful evening. Sometimes during a soundbath particular bowls reflect the energy of the room. And tonight was ALL about the heart chakra, all about compassion, empathy and connection....Just gorgeous!

When we take yin or restorative classes at Emma's Yoga Hut I search long and hard for readings and poems to nourish the mind and soothe the soul as we settle into our bodies rest and release.

"Wintering - the power of rest and retreat in difficult times." is a wonderful book by Katherine May that I have owned for a number of years. I went back to reread it again in November - and I am so glad I did.

Here is a little reading from it: Such beautiful guidance. Such perfect winter wisdom! We will be opening our solstice Midwinter Rest yin, nidra and sound evening with this reading as we settle into our starting pose of constructive rest.

❄️Midwinter is here - the darkness wrapping itself around us, and with that comes the call to rest, to hibernate❄️
But our work, festive and family responsibilities don't stop even when you may want to.
❄️Take 10 minutes to drop into rest with this free guided meditation; a simple body scan, it will help shift you out of the busy-ness of the mind and into the solidity of the body.
❄️💙 Check the comments 💙❄️ Designed to be used at any time - including for sleep so there is no closing bell.

A rare photo of Mr Yoga Hut and I - taken by the teen (who obviously refuses photos!)
We headed down to Forbury for the illuminate lights trail on Sunday - exactly a week before the Winter Solstice, and very nice it was too.

I love these kind of things in winter - so appropriate to celebrate the darkness with light. And a lovely reminder that by this time next week the light will begin to (so slowly, so gradually!) return, creeping back minute by minute, so hesitantly, so gently that we won't even be noticing it's return for a while.

Take care of yourself and your rest and wellbeing in the run up to the festive season. For those of you who receive emails a little festive treat will be dropping into your inboxes this week to help look after your rest and wellbeing! Xx

16 January - our next Seasonal Soundbath.

Treat January You to the opportunity to step out of the cold and take well deserved midwinter rest in a soothing oasis of sound. Lean into the darkness with a wintery guided meditation before allowing your self to soften into your Soundbath. All wrapped up with homemade bliss balls and oracle cards to ground you before we head out into the winters night.

Offered with love and warmth,
Emma xx

Impromptu Christmas Calm Post:

A couple of days ago I opened all the windows and then smudged the house by burning some lovely (ethically sourced) Palo Santo. As I did it I used a very beautiful smudging feather one of my yogis very kindly made for me (much to the entertainment of Rhubarb and Custard- a Kite feather! A bell! Some moving smoke! Cat Joy!)

Many of you know that it has been a challenging few months for me - and the idea of releasing the fear, worry and stress that had resided in the house and welcoming in something new felt very symbolic and positive.

Anyway; here is the festive aside!
I am currently reading a lovely wintery book "Winter Magic" by Sara Haydon, it is full of gorgeousness. In it she recommends smudging with a cinnamon stick at this time of year!

"cinnamon...offers powerful purification properties...beneficial for manifesting success...and fostering mental clarity"

Plus, who doesn't love the smell of cinnamon!?

So if you feel as though you could do with shaking out the old and welcoming in something new - perhaps simply moving along some of the stress and hecticness of the festive season and replacing it with more calm and peace, then grab yourself a cinnamon stick and a bowl and some matches. If you are lucky enough to have been gifted or own a feather or similar to smudge with grab that too, and as you burn the cinnamon stick waft the smoke around the room.

Don't like smoke? Though the smoke does not linger if you have respiratory things going on you might prefer to avoid it - it is one of the reasons we never use smoke in the Yoga Hut.** So instead try diffusing essential oils (Frankincense is a good one for this time of year), or a Himalayan salt lamp, or if you have a singing bowl playing that in each room for a moment or two can help shift out the old and make space for the new.

With love,
Emma xx

** we use a selenite crystal grid, sound bowls, diffused essential oils and fresh air to keep fresh, happy energy in the yoga hut!
