It’s a wrap on my latest Develop Your Yoga Self Practice Workshop, and I loved every minute.

Even more exciting is hearing Yogi’s take their first steps this week to do their own Self Practice at home.

A big Thank You to all of those who came & made the afternoon possible. And for enabling me to do what I love, & to share my passion to get more people getting on their mats more often.

From my hearts to yours

We were taught algebra, probably had to read & study at least one Shakespeare play, set fire to various things on a Bunsen Burner, but we were most likely not taught how to breathe. Unless you count being told to breathe through your nose so you can close your mouth when eating…

Yet we take 20,000 to 22,000 breaths per day on average.

As a recovered asthmatic, I had a love hate relationship with breathing. At times almost fearful to notice my breath incase I triggered an asthma attack. Fearful of taking a big breath incase there was wheezing. Fearful I’d forget my inhaler & not be able to breathe.

But breath, through Yoga, has changed my relationship to breathing. It’s now a tool of Wellness, something I can tap into & completely switch my day around in just a few minutes. And also something I’ve been studying more about to learn & experience how to improve my breathing.

As I learn more about the breath, it’s hard not to un-know it. And I’m enjoying starting to tweak my language when teaching to help get more people starting to feel into a more nourishing breath. And I’m excited to share more as I develop my own skills in that simple (but not necessarily easy) task of breathing.

I’ve loved open water swimming for about 13 years, come rain, shine, snow, I would get in the water almost every week. But practicalities got in the way and then the practicalities which held me back were no longer there, but I hadn’t got back in the water.

This week I did.

During some recent Yoga classes I’d been taking inspiration from the 4 Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. And it was the 3rd Agreement - Don’t Make Assumptions, that helped me see what was in the way.

I was assuming it would just be too cold to restart now, better to wait to later, assuming I didn’t have the time, & assuming getting up extra early would be too much.

So what if I let go of all those assumptions, & just did it??

This is what I did:

A) Booked myself on!
B) Decided to not push myself, recognising that I want to allow my body to acclimatise, & making sure I have a positive experience.
C) Not letting assumptions get in the way, asking what is really true. Is it really true to get my full face & head in the water is impossible due to brain freeze. For the first 150m I got more & more of my face in the water, & with brain freeze that only lasted a few seconds, & slow progression with my breath as a guide, only going further when I felt no need to even slightly gasp air in, I did it. Head fully in, & then rewarded with a smooth powerful glide through the water in my front crawl.
D) I know it was only 350m, & I used to swim 2K. But it was my first swim back & in 10 degrees water. I was proud how my swim fitness hadn’t completely been lost! And the strength from my yoga practice & I think the 30 min ball rolling to release my back & shoulder muscles pre swim really helped.

So those assumptions that held me back; not true.

And I’m all booked in for next week.

So if this has inspired you, then ask yourself; What assumptions might be holding you back from doing something you love?

Today’s self practice, I felt the need for a strong but slow Hatha practice. Bringing in some more traditional poses & advancements of them, that I don’t get to practice in many online or group classes.

I love a live in person group class, the feel of all the Yogi’s energies together, in a serene space, where my nervous system resets as soon as I walk through the door!

But adding in a Self Practice to the mix, enables me to really work on something specific I want to work on. In this case it was some deep hip opening side angles, & some more challenging twists. I felt beautifully rung out by the end.

Plus loved the sunshine and the wind blowing through my hair. Pretty sure I looked a bit like I’d been dragged through a hedge backwards, but loved every minute.

If you’d like to develop your own Self Practice, then come along & join me for my Develop Your Yoga Self Practice Workshop, that is coming up this Saturday 25th April.

Head over to my website, see link in Bio, to find full details & to book.

And if you have any questions, then please get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

On Saturday I ran my latest Alignment Workshop, and I was buzzing.

Buzzing from how the Yogi’s who came along were so fully engaged. Asking amazing thought provoking questions which not only helped them, but opened up new ideas for other Yogis there.

And I was thrilled everyone embraced the mirrors in the room. Getting to see ourselves in poses, whilst a teacher comes & adjusts you, so you can then see the alignment, & feel it in your body, is rare.

I could see how motivated everyone was to then use what they’d learned. And the proof is seeing them in classes this week already putting it into practice.

Keep an eye out for my Autumn workshops where I have exciting plans for more Alignment workshops.

A big Thank You to those that came 🙏🏻

Sometimes my Self Practice takes me somewhere unexpected… This time I checked in with my body and it was screaming out for something to really open up the back plain of my body, it felt tight from my achilles to the base of my skull. So I started moving, bringing in lots of movement to free up the back plain of my body.

And as the back plain is intricately connected into the hips, I did quite a few hip openers.

Then I went into Ardha Hanamanasana, 1/2 splits. And I thought, why not try a full splits. With the help of a couple of bricks and a big squiggly ball I arrived into a pose that I am not normally a fan off.

The beauty of a Self Practice is listening to the body, & then playfully exploring, you never know where you might end up.

This little snippet jumped out at me from one of Kat’s recent Newsletters. She was talking about the power of us being our true selves and sharing with the world who we are, saying what we feel, & sharing our insights. Radiating love & light.

I couldn’t agree more.

Thanks for that little dose of love & light in my inbox
