Spamming the world with some beautiful waterbirth photos. Because I can and they are beautiful photos 😍

Women will often question how they will cope with labour at home. "Do you have gas and air", "what else do you have" - these are questions I get.
My response is often the same: " when we are in our own environment with the right support, often we don't need anything other than some warm water".
And its true.
I carry gas and air with me but it actually very rarely gets used. This year I have only replaced my cylinders twice. True fact.

Braxton Hicks in pregnancy!
I love Braxton Hicks. It reminds me of how clever our bodies are. The uterus 'warms up'. It's like the mini work outs before the big day!
Some women have more than other. Some women aren't aware of them (more so first time mums). As long as they are not painful or regular then they are nothing to worry about at any gestation.
I have always started getting Braxton Hicks at about 18-19 weeks with my pregnancies and get them every day throughout.
When I've had a day full of feelings good (like a clients birth, or snuggles with my children or s*x), I always get more - this will be because of the increased Oxytocin in those moments.
Our bodies really are amazing.
Closer to birth they will slowly get longer, stronger and more frequent, turning into labour surges/contractions, but in 3rd trimester they will be softly and slowly working the cervix, softening and ripening it for labour.

We as women give so much to our baby's including our own bone density. It's crazy and amazing all at the same time.
We must take care of ourselves and understand that are joints and bones are weakened. Still capable but weakened.

This is homebirth. 😍

Creating a calm, warm, safe space with your own home comforts and your chosen birth partners. To feel enpowered to make your own choices and be in full control. It can make all the difference.

And how luck I feel to support women and their families like this. Whether birth finishes at home or elsewhere- to experience all or part of this is something else and so special.
Thank you for aĺlowing me to share these personal photos/videos of their journey into parenthood again 🥰

And to anyone considering Homebirth - do it.

When the world is telling you to slow down but takes it one step (literally) too far!!

Looks like maternity leave has started early!! 😭

I may have a small smile on my face but there has been a lot of tear this afternoon. Im more sad about how debilitating this is when I have 2 children to look after.
I cant drive or walk at the moment. Just a nightmare and its my kids who are going to loss out 😔

Anyway, for now, boot stays on. Paracetamol will become my best friend (I hope to avoid the strong stuff) and getting to the loo 4 times each night just hit a new level! 😳

Day 5 = weigh in and heel prick test day!

I hate doing these on the babies. Seems so mean to purposely inflict pain 😔 but they are also very satisfying tests to obtain! 🫣😬

I had a lovely day yesterday, seeing 2 clients. One 3 weeks postnatal and one 5 days postnatal. They are bith doing fantastic and their babies are thriving 🥰

Calibration day involves ensuring all our equipment is sound and functioning correctly, so we can provide gold standard care to our clients.

Its always so lovely catching up with each other over a cuppa and yummy food. There are a few faces missing though, who couldnt make it on the day. We missed you all 🥰

The day always feels productive too as we come away with equipment we can safety use again for another year! Well unless the engineer drops it!! Ops! 🤦‍♀️

Many may find the placenta a difficult thing to look at and want to turn their noses up at it, which I get, but it's very important for us (Midwives, birth workers, mothers) to check them. Why? I hear you say!

We are looking at many factors:
-Does it look like all the membranes are present.
- are there 2 membranes
- does it look like there are any bits of the placenta missing
- are there any vessels (not the cord) coming from the placenta, indicating there may have been an extra lobe
- is there an extra lobe!
- where does the cord insert (middle, side or on the menbranes)!
- what length is the cord
- any knots or abnormalities in the cord
- are there 3 vessels in the cord
- are there any signs of infection (colour/smell).

All these factors help us ensure a mother and baby are well or can aid us in making other diagnoses, like retained products of conception, infection, fetal anomalies and bleeding risk.

So, next time you think what on earth is my midwife doing proding my placenta (and probably loving it!) You will know shes continuing to assess you and your baby health and ensuring all is well.

Thank you .songmidwifery
for snapping these photos/video. 🩷
