Should I Trust Argan Oil for My Hair? A Consultant Trichologist’s Perspective

Argan oil can improve shine, softness, and reduce frizz, especially for dry, coarse, or curly hair. However, not all argan oil products are equal, and results depend on your hair and scalp type, as well as the amount of sun or heat exposure after application. If you are on a sunny holiday, please refrain from using any oil at all. For best results, use 100% pure, cold-pressed argan oil only on the lengths, not the scalp.

If you’re dealing with hair loss or breakage, a personalised consultation is essential.

Female Pattern Baldness (Female Pattern Hair Loss) is a hereditary thinning that affects the top and crown, caused by follicle sensitivity to normal DHT. Hairs gradually miniaturise so the parting widens, volume drops, and the scalp looks more visible, while the sides and back often stay denser.

It can start after puberty and is common around perimenopause or menopause. PCOS, thyroid imbalance, and low iron may coexist and should be checked. Unlike telogen effluvium, which sheds full-length hairs from all over, FPHL shows finer, shorter hairs in a typical pattern.

At Shuna Hammocks Trichology in Forest Row, Sussex, we confirm the diagnosis with examination and dermoscopy, review blood tests and discuss realistic options. Management aims to stabilise and improve appearance with scalp care, hair-friendly styling, nutrition guidance, and coordinated medical choices.

Hello everyone! A lot of you have been asking about how to choose the right shampoo for your scalp and hair type. In this video, I break down the key differences and share my approach, which is inspired by Philip Kingsley's ethos.

It's not just about what shampoo you use, but also about understanding your specific needs. If you have an itchy or greasy scalp, you might need an antifungal or antibacterial shampoo. For fine hair, shampoos with high and low molecular weight proteins can add body. And for coarse, thick, or wavy hair, a moisturising shampoo with a lower volume-causing protein content can help smooth things down.

It's about going beyond just your hair colour or style and focusing on what your scalp and hair truly need.

If you'd like to find out more about your particular hair and scalp type, you can contact me on the website.

Hair loss after COVID? You're not alone. It's not uncommon to experience hair loss for up to a year after recovering from COVID-19.

There are a few reasons for this:

- Inflammation: The body's inflammation markers (like CRP and ESR) can be affected.

- Fever: A high fever can cause hair to go into a "resting" phase and fall out excessively.

- Other factors: Being unwell can lead to a poor diet or a change in your routine, which can also impact hair health.

A trichologist can help you identify the cause of your hair loss and recommend the most suitable solution for you. If you have concerns about post-COVID hair loss, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Consulting a Flare of Alopecia Areata Incognita: Q&A with Trichologist Shuna Hammocks

Dear Shuna

I realise it’s unlikely, as it’s very short notice to be asking, but I wondered if you might have any last minute availability for a face to face consultation

I received a diagnosis of alopecia areata incognita (along with seborrheic dermatitis and TE) back in 2023 and I feel it’s really flared up recently. At the time, I was prescribed a 6 week course of topical steroid lotion and I was recommended some shampoos, which I continue to use to this day.

When I was originally diagnosed, the alopecia was mainly contained on the left hand side but I’ve been experiencing a lot of hair fall and noticeable thinning all over recently, especially on the crown, along with little red bumps on the scalp which are quite sore.

Can I book in to see you please?

L.

Fragile Hair, Thyroid Health & Extension Damage

When your hair starts to feel more fragile than usual, it’s often a signal that something deeper may be at play.

A recent client shared that she’d been wearing extensions for several months, which, unfortunately, had caused visible pulling and breakage, particularly around the hairline. Add to this a history of low thyroid function, and it’s no surprise that the hair was struggling to cope.

The thyroid plays a key role in regulating the hair growth cycle. When underactive, it can slow regrowth and weaken the hair structure, making it more susceptible to mechanical stress, such as tight or heavy extensions.

In cases like this, wearing a hairpiece temporarily can be a kind, practical choice while we focus on healing the scalp and protecting the remaining hair.

A professional consultation allows us to explore:

- How underlying health may be impacting your hair
- Early signs of traction alopecia or other scalp stress
- Personalised strategies to support regrowth and hair strength

Even in challenging or complex situations, there’s always something we can do. If your hair has changed and you're unsure why—or what to do next—you're not alone.

📍If you're near Forest Row and would like to explore your next steps, I'm here to help. A warm, respectful consultation can make all the difference.

Is Argan Oil the Secret to Longer Hair? 🤔

It’s loved for shine, softness, and frizz control — but does it actually trigger hair growth? That’s where the confusion begins...

🌿 While argan oil nourishes and protects the strands, it doesn’t reach the root of the problem (literally). Hair growth is a scalp issue, and that’s where trichology comes in.

🧠 Want to know what truly supports growth from the root up?
