The traditions and practices of the ancient pagan, celtic and esoteric schools of wisdom may seem 'new age" but are deeply rooted in the natural cycles of nature and the cycle of life itself.
The upcoming winter solstice marks the astronomical start of winter. Though the darkest point of the year, it is in fact a turning point and signifies the day the sun stands still, solstice is derived from the Latin sol, sun and sistere, to stand still, before reversing direction and the light re-enters the world.
The winter solstice in many north European traditions marks the point of the new year or new cycle, one where the potential for rebirth and new growth begins. A time to take stock, reflect upon the past and let go of that which no longer serves us and embrace the potential of new beginnings.
When we look at that in seasonal terms, nature shows us the way here. Autumn leaves fall to the ground, releasing the burden of what is spent and nourishing the earth through the winter to fertilise new growth in the spring.
Couple that with the Chinese tradition of a 12 year cycle represented by symbolic animals which bring their qualities into play within their time cycle, we can look at the current year of the snake and reflect upon what the snake represents, transformation, shedding and endings. Just like the snake which transforms by the process of shedding its skin, there are painful moments before transformation. The coming year of the horse in 2026 follows on from those endings and brings in the new energy of movement, freedom, exploration and inspiration.
Whether you connect to those rhythms of not, the opportunity to move from being stuck in old patterns to embracing the potential and possibly of being more of who we are and can be is upon us, now. Take the space to reflect upon where your journey can take you from here.
Seasons greeting, let the light return.
