Working at a computer, you should take regular breaks. Prolonged use can lead to staring and potentially dry eyes as a result of insufficient blinking.

Use the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and focus your eyes on something at least 20 feet away.

There is no fixed age for children to start wearing lenses, but here are a few factors to consider. Getting used to contact lenses can take a little while. Your child needs to be motivated to learn how to put the lenses in and out: they need to be able to do this themselves. They also need a certain amount of discipline: it’s important not to wear the lenses for too many hours, so think about whether your child can do this. There is also a routine to learn for keeping the lenses clean and hygienic. While disposable lenses make life easier, nothing can get rid of the need to wash your hands every time you put the lenses in or out.

We often get asked questions such as “How do I let people know I’m Visually Impaired?” and “How do I recognise that someone is Visually Impaired?”
There are quite a few ideas out there such as Lanyards
that are highly visible that say “Please be Patient I am
Visually Impaired” or the recognised Hidden Disabilities
Lanyards.

There is also though a white “stick” (or what we like to call a cane 😊)
and a white walking stick.

These are ‘visible’ aids - they can physically enhance and identify the environment through touch and sound, as well as being a visible aid that bus drivers, shop employees, medical staff etc recognise, without the person using it having to say anything.

If you want to know more - just get in touch. Nothumberland Sensory Services can issue these free of charge to our service uses. However, if you are anxious, hesitant or have even been advised against having one, just get in touch and we can have a chat about these aids or alternate ideas to keep you safe and independent.

School vision screenings are an important programme, but it is a basic eye test and it’s not offered in every area of the UK. Make sure you book a full eye examination at your opticians.

We have had some queries on our helpline about how the heatwaves can affect eye pressure. The truth is, eye pressure can fluctuate naturally throughout the day, but the link between heat and eye pressure is weak and it’s unlikely that it will cause your eye pressure to increase. Be safe in the extreme heat and stay hydrated.

Contact our helpline if you have any further questions about this: https://glaucoma.uk/care-support/helpline/
